CydeWeys··on Google lays off its Python team
Why would they lay off the existing team first, rather than spin up the new team, have the old team train the new team, and give old team members a chance to move countries if they wanted?
CydeWeys··on Google lays off its Python team
Any guess how many SWE-yrs are now going to be spent migrating existing Python projects away from Python, now that Python seems to be unsupported at Google going forward?
CydeWeys··on Apple users are being locked out of their Apple IDs with no explanation
You're missing my point that you're still beholden to the domain name registrar that manages your domain name on your behalf. That account getting permanently locked out will have all the same bad consequences for your online life as your Google account getting locked out.

And keep in mind that being a domain name registrar is a low margin business (typically they're only grossing a few bucks per domain per year, before accounting for any other expenses like staffing and systems), so you're not gonna get great support.

CydeWeys··on Apple users are being locked out of their Apple IDs with no explanation
Fundamentally it's going to be be bound to someone though. If you run your own domain to host your main email address, you're now bound to the registrar's login to manage that domain name, and also the cloud provider you're using to host the mail services (unless you run that off a machine you have physical access to).
CydeWeys··on FTC announces rule banning noncompetes
The bar is quite high at these kinds of companies. If you let off the gas and try to coast like that, you'll just get fired and thus lose the deferred comp that way.
CydeWeys··on Google Fires 28 Employees After Multi-City Protests
Journalists know better than to get involved in something like that. They would be asked to leave immediately (it's super easy to notice people standing around filming what's going on who aren't wearing employee badges), and then they would of course leave immediately as they aren't willing to catch a trespass charge just for one page 17 news article.
CydeWeys··on Meta.ai Oh My
> Tim, you aren't important enough for an LLM to have an accurate summary for you

In which case an actually useful LLM would spit back a response along the lines of "I don't really know who that is", rather than making up an entire seemingly authoritative biography.

CydeWeys··on Google fires 28 employees involved in sit-in protest over $1.2B Israel contract
Disrupted/hijacked multiple trainings and seminars to push his agenda, and persisted long past the point where it was made clear to him his input was no longer welcome on those matters. He was also arguing a lot on mailing lists with a lot of people about the same kinds of ideas that were in the memo. Basically turned a lot of people off who didn't want to be working with him after that. It was more than just writing that one memo; it was a whole pattern.

Did that merit firing? Eh, I'm not particularly interested in reopening that debate. But it was certainly more complicated than that he wrote that one memo.

CydeWeys··on Google fires 28 workers in indiscriminate act of mass retaliation
Most of the employees are not working on ads though.
CydeWeys··on Google fires 28 employees involved in sit-in protest over $1.2B Israel contract
He did a lot more than that.
CydeWeys··on Google workers arrested after protesting company's work with Israel
They have since been fired too.
CydeWeys··on Google Fires 28 Employees After Multi-City Protests
It doesn't absolve you of guilt whatsoever. If you're feeling lots of guilt over what your employer is doing, then you should resign. There are absolutely companies I would never work for because I morally disagree with what they're doing. Google is not one of them.
CydeWeys··on Google Fires 28 Employees After Multi-City Protests
A corporate office is not like an administration building at a soft-handed university. There's no way you are going to successfully take over an office for any real amount of time unless you are willing to use real violence and potentially get into some kind of hostage situation.

The police will be called, there will be more of them than of you, and they will remove you.

CydeWeys··on Squatters take over Gordon Ramsay's London pub
That's pretty rare though, especially in the US. And generally afaik, historic listings here impose a cost on the homeowner but not a benefit (i.e. a tax break).
CydeWeys··on The darker side of being a doctor (2017)
Quality does suffer as the hours drag on, but quality suffers more when you hand off a case (which can be quite complex) to someone else. The tired but experienced-with-this-case doctor still does a better job than the rested doctor who is brand new to the patient's case.
CydeWeys··on Squatters take over Gordon Ramsay's London pub
Well that's an easy fix right there. In the US you pay property taxes regardless.

CydeWeys··on The darker side of being a doctor (2017)
I have. Longer shifts with fewer turn-overs results in better patient outcomes.
CydeWeys··on The darker side of being a doctor (2017)
Have we though? You got any source on that? There's already a severe shortage of doctors, so what happens if standards are significantly increased?

Having a doctor available to treat you at all is still much better than having your very high standards and then not having a doctor available period.

CydeWeys··on Anatomy of a credit card rewards program
Can't you just print up a sign for this?

I've seen signs that say stuff like "Prices listed are for cash, 3% surcharge for credit cards."

How many different fee tiers are you as a retailer really trying to charge?

CydeWeys··on How Hertz’s bet on Teslas went sideways
The parent comment said "Tesla doesn't believe in PR". It's clear that Tesla does in fact believe in PR judging by all of Elon's related activities, they just do it differently than other companies.

Also, look at website content like this: https://www.tesla.com/about

That is PR, regardless of whether you want to call the people doing it "PR" or not.

CydeWeys··on How Hertz’s bet on Teslas went sideways
And yet Elon does massive PR stunts on the regular, including smashing a Cybertruck's windows at a launch event. Curious...
CydeWeys··on White House wants Moon to have its own time zone, Coordinated Lunar Time (CLT)
Now that's the billion dollar question, isn't it.

But it's true.

CydeWeys··on Baltimore's Key Bridge struck by cargo ship, collapses
Not my wording. I was responding to someone who was confused whether pilot refers to the normal ship's crew (it does not).
CydeWeys··on Baltimore's Key Bridge struck by cargo ship, collapses
I put in the quotes because the person asking the question picked the exact phrasing, which as we both pointed out isn't correct. They're just pilots. The normal crew driving the boat are crew, not pilots.
CydeWeys··on U.S. podcast listening reach new high: 47% listened one last month, +12% YoY
I do most of my podcast listening in the gym, while walking around the city going places, and on airplanes, trains, and buses.

CydeWeys··on Canada's maple syrup reserve hits 16-year low
It's not a joke. This is a strategic reserve for them.

> Some other cloud storage service? No, that doesn't work - you need your phone to generate a token for access

You definitely don't need your phone for access. I use Yubico security keys for everything like this. I have several of them that are on all my accounts and I don't keep them in the same place.
