CyberShadow··on Brave and Firefox to intercept links that force-open in Microsoft Edge
Devil's advocate: if the link is in a Windows component, then it would somewhat make sense that clicking the link would open it in a first-party application which the OS vendor can control. If the association with http: URLs somehow got messed up (e.g. the default web browser got broken due to something outside Microsoft's control), you'd be in a worse situation than if the Control Panel etc. used a simpler but fully supported first party web browser.
CyberShadow··on “Static Linking Considered Harmful” Considered Harmful
You would have to do that anyway. With static linking, you also have to rebuild those dependents and make sure their users update them as well.
CyberShadow··on “Static Linking Considered Harmful” Considered Harmful
There is a distinction between a fully-static binary and a non-fully-static one, which is what I think the article refers to. A fully static binary will not need to call the dynamic linker at all, and tools such as "file" or "ldd" will identify such binaries differently. A fully static binary will also run even in the complete absence of any userspace support for its architecture (assuming the hardware and kernel do support it) - e.g. a static AArch64 binary will run on a 32-bit ARM distribution, if the CPU supports AArch64.
CyberShadow··on IPv6 Fundamentals: A Straightforward Approach to Understanding IPv6, 2nd Edition
You can configure your operating system to prefer IPv4 over IPv6. On glibc systems, this can be done by adding e.g. "precedence ::ffff:0:0/96 100" to /etc/gai.conf.
CyberShadow··on Footnotes now supported in GitHub Markdown
You can already do this with HTML, if you want to:

### <a id="about"></a>What is all this about?

CyberShadow··on Footnotes now supported in GitHub Markdown
HTML doesn't have footnotes, does it?
CyberShadow··on Paint.NET 4.3 is now available
Paint.NET is non-free software ... for an extremely petty reason.

The reason? Someone new to programming changed the author in the about box and published it on their website.

Well, the author sure showed those terrible plagiarizers by making the project non-free. (Meanwhile, it is as easy as ever to modify .NET applications without source access - see e.g. the numerous mods for Unity games.)

CyberShadow··on POW Captcha: a lightweight, self-hosted proof-of-work captcha
Don't move the goalposts.

Native code is not "2-100x faster" than WebAssembly. That's what I wanted to address.

CyberShadow··on POW Captcha: a lightweight, self-hosted proof-of-work captcha
According to the README, the implementation is already multi-threaded and uses WASM, which is not too far off from native performance.
CyberShadow··on POW Captcha: a lightweight, self-hosted proof-of-work captcha
You need a datastore anyway to prevent replay attacks.
CyberShadow··on Writing Programs with Ncurses
For whatever reason, my country is banned from accessing this website.

CyberShadow··on Show HN: Get lists of files in a directory that contains a large number of files
Yes. You may also find that `ls` is slower than `ls|cat`, because the latter needs to call `stat` for every directory entry to colorize it.
CyberShadow··on Almost all of the top subreddits are moderated by the same people
I was under the impression that shadowbanning was a moderation technique reserved for the admins, and unavailable to subreddit moderators; IIRC, it also applied to the entire website.
CyberShadow··on Exploring Clang/LLVM optimization on programming horror
Not nitpicky at all - I was confused as to why one would want to do register allocation before control/data flow analysis. Thanks for the explanation!
CyberShadow··on RunAsDate – Run a program with the specified date/time (2019)
Time namespacing would achieve this, had it not omitted the real-time clock:

> Note that time namespaces do not virtualize the CLOCK_REALTIME clock. Virtualization of this clock was avoided for reasons of complexity and overhead within the kernel.

CyberShadow··on Windows Defender blocks qBittorrent
The window manager manages windows. It has nothing to do with the filesystem or how it's presented to the user.
CyberShadow··on Ncdu 2: Less hungry and more Ziggy
Very cool. In my mind, ncdu is "the" TUI tool for disk usage analysis. I copied its UI in making btdu, a similar tool specifically for btrfs filesystems. Written in D!

CyberShadow··on Windows Command-Line Obfuscation
What is an example of a command line string that is split differently by Shell32 and MSVCRT? In D, we use CommandLineToArgvW. I'm guessing it's related to Unicode?
CyberShadow··on Valve Steam Deck
By Arch, do you mean Arch Linux? According to https://www.game-debate.com/news/25482/valve-counts-to-3-ste... , it seems to be based on Debian 9.
CyberShadow··on My app just got removed with no prior warning
From the article:

> My app correctly offered a privacy policy link in its Google Play listing

I think that counts as being able to read it before downloading?

CyberShadow··on Police officer plays Taylor Swift song to keep a video off YouTube
Judging from that call recording apps apparently need to implement support for recording calls over Bluetooth separately, I would conclude that this does go over a different path, but still needs to be handled explicitly.
CyberShadow··on Police officer plays Taylor Swift song to keep a video off YouTube
> They also removed access to root folders on a whim.

I don't know what you mean by this exactly, but from the manufacturer's view, any method of allowing the modification of the operating system software is a vulnerability (because the same could be done to e.g. install rootkits). This is why many devices allow unlocking the bootloader (as the official way to modify the OS) but announce this loudly on boot.

CyberShadow··on Police officer plays Taylor Swift song to keep a video off YouTube
The reason is mostly technical. Depending on the phone, call audio isn't implemented as much in software as wired directly (in some variable degree) to the radio hardware.

This is why the quality and success rate of call recording apps varies - it depends how many kinds of configurations the app authors managed to implement support / workarounds for.

CyberShadow··on Gloss3D – an open source 3D Modeler for Linux and Windows
Question from someone completely unfamiliar with this domain - when would you choose to use this instead of Blender?
CyberShadow··on Ask HN: In Emacs, is there an alternative to GPG encryption in Org Mode?
If you have gnupg installed, emacs can just open foo.org.gpg files directly. It decrypts on load and re-encrypts on save.

Probably you would get better answers about Emacs on https://emacs.stackexchange.com/ or https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/ .

CyberShadow··on JPEG XL
> It would be amazing if the browsers offered a built-in „Download & Convert“ feature for images and videos.

In a way, they already do for images: right-click and "Copy". In some desktop environments, you can even paste that directly into a folder to save it as a file. Dolphin allows choosing which format (of those that the browser can convert to) to save it in.

CyberShadow··on Linux with “memory folios”: a 7% performance boost when compiling the kernel
Because you use a "multiple" of pointers to refer to a single entity. (It's a C joke.)
CyberShadow··on Listening to speech with a guinea pig-to-human brain-to-brain interface
Two random choices from a set of four words has a 25% chance of being equal, so that seems significant.
CyberShadow··on Goodbye Freenode
> What good would that do,

It would save both staff and users a lot of time from having to re-register accounts, channels, and projects/communities.

> if the users aren't connecting to the network?

I don't understand this part, sorry.
