CubsFan1060··on Zero downtime Postgres upgrades
Each one incurs some downtime. If their real answer is less than 60 seconds, then they’d have incurred that multiple times on the road to 15.
CubsFan1060··on TSA introducing self-service screening technology in Las Vegas
Out of curiosity do you have stats on that? Until recently 100% of the people I knew with precheck don’t have global entry. Right now global entry interviews can be over a year out.

I wish I had a way to quantify it, but it also seems like _investment_ has skyrocketed. 20 years ago HBO might make a high quality, high budget show. Now we have shows like the Marvel TV Shows, Wheel of Time, Foundation, House of the Dragon, the Mandalorian, Rings of Power, etc.. that all have MASSIVE budgets. A lot of that was funded by free money, but I think the quality and expectation of TV shows has gone up quite a bit.

So what, specifically, do you want to see different about Youtube?
CubsFan1060··on Does uBlock Origin bypass the latest YouTube anti-adblock script?
I like how you are thinking. I do wonder if I'd get to see things like, say, Practical Engineering in an ad-free world. He seems to be passionate about it, so maybe?

Keep in mind this is a random reddit thread I found and I can't vouch for the information, but: https://www.reddit.com/r/youtube/comments/177353i/you_should...

According to that, $8.55 of your $19 would go to the creators. Presumably the other $10.45 goes for storage, bandwidth, operational overhead, and profit.

> You can still make money on the internet without ads.

Now that in and of itself is a fascinating statement that I kind of agree with? What kind of things are you thinking? The only thing I can really think of is trying to get people to pay for physical objects. Or, perhaps, providing a service that can't be copied (i.e. Video tutoring)

Ads? There are ad-blockers. Subscriptions? People will just use archive so that they don't have to pay you. Donations like Pateron? Maybe viable? I don't know exactly how the business models there work.

Aren't these all VERY tightly integrated? They can sell merch and sponsorships _because_ of YouTube in the first place?
CubsFan1060··on Does uBlock Origin bypass the latest YouTube anti-adblock script?
Maybe. I think "too high" is probably subjective to each person.

But, I'm in the camp of "if it's too high, just stop using it". I think this isn't different than most things. If I think the price of electricity is too high, my option isn't to say "well, your price it too high, so I'm going to use electricity for free".

I think that is totally fine. Serving it, of course, is not free. Content may not have been my best choice of words.
CubsFan1060··on Does uBlock Origin bypass the latest YouTube anti-adblock script?
> I can't speak for anybody else but my content will still get made.

How will your content get served? If you say you'll just pay to serve it, I think that's a fine answer.

CubsFan1060··on Does uBlock Origin bypass the latest YouTube anti-adblock script?
I'm curious -- what do you want to happen in this situation? What is your best desired outcome? It sounds like you are arguing that video sharing sites are a utility?
CubsFan1060··on Does uBlock Origin bypass the latest YouTube anti-adblock script?
What does winning mean in this context?

If we take this to an extreme, doesn't content just not get made? Do you think Google is going to go to a model where things are freely accessible without ads?

Feels like even when a company provides a way to get rid of ads, many people still won't pay. They _say_ they will, but I find often people will want to substitute their own terms (Well, youtube premium is $x, but I think it's only worth $y, so I'm going to just block ads completely).

CubsFan1060··on Apple pulls plug on Goldman credit-card partnership
I thought that Apple Pay is always accepted at the same places where you can tap to pay. Is there a difference? This mentions it can be used anywhere that the contactless payments symbol is.

And I’d have said whipping out my card sucks compared to using the watch that’s already on my hand. (Of course that works with my other cards as well)

Ironically, I just read it on Apple News.
CubsFan1060··on Terraform Cloud Pricing Changes Sticker Shock
Thanks! Feels like most of the time I fall right in the horrible spot of basically 'very small enterprise'. I need some enterprise features, but will never be able to get funding for the enterprise version.

Thanks!

CubsFan1060··on Terraform Cloud Pricing Changes Sticker Shock
Is concurrency in this sense mostly just 'how many terraform plan/apply runs you have going at once?'

Also, is the Enterprise plan significantly more expensive than the cloud plan?

CubsFan1060··on Ask HN: Why are there no open source NVMe-native key value stores in 2023?
Interesting article here: https://grafana.com/blog/2023/08/23/how-we-scaled-grafana-cl...

Utilizing: https://memcached.org/blog/nvm-caching/,https://github.com/m...

TLDR; Grafana Cloud needed tons of Caching, and it was expensive. So they used extstore in memcache to hold most of it on NVMe disks. This massively reduced their costs.

CubsFan1060··on OpenTelemetry in 2023
Yeah, I've used the Ruby one, and the results were... painful.
CubsFan1060··on OpenTelemetry in 2023
Oh, right. I guess my question was more around "why can't OTEL _also_ have something that does that"?
CubsFan1060··on OpenTelemetry in 2023
That's an interesting distinction. Given some of the older, larger code bases, manually instrumenting seems like it would require a reasonably large effort. I think that's one of the huge benefits that some of the APM's bring.

I wonder if there is any reason OTEL can't have both.

CubsFan1060··on Microsoft faces antitrust scrutiny from the EU over Teams, Office 365
For many remote workers, this is the single largest connection they have to their coworkers and work. It is your main communication method you use. I think the argument is that if you define the problem as "all of them let you chat with one another", then they all satisfy it.

But when it's your main communication method, you want people to enjoy it, use it, and want to use it more. You don't want people to avoid communication because they have to use a crappy IM client. These small differences have huge impacts.

I've used all of them in the past, and Teams was, and still is, the one I avoid chatting with someone unless absolutely necessary.

I don't think your statement about mid drives is correct.

There are some (a small amount) that support throttle. For example: https://bafangusadirect.com/products/bafang-1000w-bbshd-mid-...

CubsFan1060··on Every Louisiana driver's license holder exposed in cyberattack
I think the “photograph” at airports is more than that. You need to load your id onto your phone, take pictures of yourself, have them reviewed (not sure if this is automated or by a human), and be approved.

After that it’s a combination of your phone/watch plus your photo.

It’s not perfect, but it’s more than just comparing your photo to your drivers license photo.

Edit: looks like there may be a second program that does just what you say: https://www.tsa.gov/biometrics-technology/evaluating-facial-...

This is the program that I am aware of: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213329
