Crontab··on X starts experimenting with a $1 per year fee for new users
Ah, I missed that somehow. You are correct.
Crontab··on X starts experimenting with a $1 per year fee for new users
Metafilter does something like this, where you have to pay a fee to sign up.
Crontab··on Canadians have a ‘right to be forgotten’ on Google, Federal Court rules
More like the right to suppress history.
Crontab··on Microsoft has not stopped forcing Edge on Windows 11 users
This makes me mad because I actually do like Windows. I don't understand the need to make it crappy considering their market share.
Crontab··on Microsoft has not stopped forcing Edge on Windows 11 users
I do the same thing with Apple's Spotlight.
Crontab··on Google, Meta, Amazon hiring low-paid H1B workers after US layoffs
I don't mind H1B visas but I do worry about the amount of power it gives the employer over the workers who are under it. It just seems ripe for abuse.
Crontab··on “Is There a God?” By Bertrand Russell
In my opinion, there is no god or any other supernatural agents in the universe. There is no grand plan.

If there is a god then humanity is probably something akin to an ant farm to it. To expect god to care about any particular person is like trying to care about one particular ant in a colony.

Crontab··on Bypassing Bitlocker using a cheap logic analyzer on a Lenovo laptop
I was under the impression that BitLocker does not default to being on, even with a Microsoft account. That's kind of dangerous if they have changed that without at least a warning.
Crontab··on Cellebrite asks cops to keep its technology secret
I have wondered if there are matches between different people in DNA databases and, if so, how often is happens.
Crontab··on Amazon to Impose 2% Fee on Third-Party Sellers Who Ship Products Themselves
Personally, I would like an Amazon-only version of the store. I don't want to deal with third parties.
Crontab··on Older mouse brains rejuvenated by protein found in young blood
I feel bad for mice. We've solved so many of their health issues and they never get to benefit from them.
Crontab··on PSA: Intel Graphics Drivers Now Collect Telemetry by Default
Telemetry by default should be illegal. They should be required to obtain owner permission.
Crontab··on Bram Moolenaar has died
I will forever be grateful for Bram's contribution to the world of free software and to humanity. I hope he will be remembered for a long time.
Crontab··on Mastercard demands US cannabis shops stop accepting debit cards
I stopped at a dispensary while visiting Illinois and they were only accepting cash there. I assumed that the banking and taxes were the reason why.
Crontab··on Become Ungoogleable
Joey Hess. The first time I heard his name, it was an article for Linux Journal, which was about managing your home directory in CVS. He went up to create Git-Annex, which I understand works well.
Crontab··on Moving the Evernote center of operations to Europe
Turning Evernote into Nevernote.
Crontab··on How Reddit crushed the biggest protest in its history
Thanks to Reddit, I now use the Reddit mobile site instead of Apollo. It sucks in comparison.
Crontab··on Why Perl?
Thank you.
Crontab··on macOS command-line tools you might not know about
When a new MacOS release comes out, one of the first things I look for is adds and changes to the command line tools. Sadly they are not the things that most people care about on a new release.
Crontab··on Why Perl?
If someone was getting into this today, would you recommend Perl or Raku?
Crontab··on Show HN: My solar-powered, ePaper digital photo frame
Very nice work!
Crontab··on PSA: Upgrade your LUKS key derivation function
I think the mention that upgrading your distro doesn't automatically enable a better KDF for LUKS is a good point.
Crontab··on The ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 as a Linux Laptop
I'm not saying that I think this should be the default, as I know many people love it, but I would like the option to buy a Thinkpad without the TrackPoint. I am just not a fan of it.
Crontab··on TWM − Tab Window Manager for the X Window System
I had seen it both ways but I always think "Tom" as well.
Crontab··on Twitter suspends pg's account [fixed]
I closed my account earlier this week. Between Musk’s erratic behavior, the fact that they aren’t paying their rent, and are trying to get out of contractual software licensing fees, I decided that it was time to go.
Crontab··on Starfish and Coffee
One of my favorite Prince songs.
Crontab··on In Praise of Plan 9
I pretty much love all of the free-unix but dislike them for graphical use. I have generally stuck with Windows or MacOS for general desktop usage.

I've considered a combination setup of a terminal system for my unix needs and a tablet for web and video. ChromeOS would work well for this too, I think.

Crontab··on Audio CD ripping – optical drive accuracy listing
Back when I was ripping my collection to FLAC, I used EAC because of AccurateRip, which is something that cdparanoia did not offer - at least at that time.
Crontab··on For personal reasons, I do not browse the web from my computer. (2007)
I have too. I suppose that one could set up a headless chrome instance for that.
Crontab··on There is no “software supply chain”
> The author of an open source project usually makes NO guarantees and assumes no liability.

That's pretty much true of commercial software as well.
