Cro_on··on Why you should write
long hand on plain paper - then dictation onto the computer. it's a nice system combining the sound feel, including a first edit as you change the medium.
Cro_on··on No, It’s Not Actually a Murder of Crows – Okay, technically it is (2015)
i am a little saddened by your downvotes after deciding to actually check the definition of 'venery', without making more assumptions on top of your assumptions, to find that the first definition is in fact 'sexual indulgence'. the second definition being 'hunting' thereby making your mistaken definition a very reasonable mistake.
Cro_on··on The bridges portrayed on Euro banknotes aren't fictional anymore
afaict the bridges were only designed for the notes (or unbuilt designs were used because they had a certain european aesthetic), and then the designs were used to build real bridges in the netherlands. it's just a tourist spot, similar to las vegas' wonders of the world.

Person with Volume X (Moul-Ovum) of the second edition OED in front of them here..

a simple reply to this would be that in no dictionary 'pu' comes before 'po' :)

granted, octopodes comes under the heading of octopus, as it's plural, so it is technically after.

but following the loose nature of the quote in hand, it is also in fact true that octopi comes before octopuses, it just so happens to be attached to the full word 'octopian' - suggestive of an octopus

Cro_on··on Giant Pacific Octopus
yes, they are almost the same

the greek d was actually a hard th sound iirc, Δελτα being pronounced 'thelta' as opposed to 'delta'.

hopefully that clarifies (and is actually accurate) how octopuses and octopodes are connected

Cro_on··on Giant Pacific Octopus
unfortunately and to shatter your dreams, as mine were, it is and has always been:

octopuses*

tis mixage of greik and latin eytymologies and wyll not bey allowed

Cro_on··on UK government’s plans to regulate the internet are a threat to free speech
Apologies in advance for my lacking content comment.

I'd just like to point out the large quantity of greyed out comments on this thread...

Cro_on··on UK government’s plans to regulate the internet are a threat to free speech
I'm guessing you believe that domestic abuse is primarily a physical act?
Cro_on··on Scientists say a mind-bending rhythm in the brain can act like ketamine
AFAICT it is a mantra based meditation. All you have to do is hand over all your money to a guru and they will give you some arbitrary mantra with which you meditate with, repeating the single phrase under your breath. IANATMG but I think the mantra should have little personal value; it is used as an exercise, presumably to do with the breath, rather than a personal philosophy type mantra.

Better yet, ram into the back of them so they really get the message.

I think the point is that you will do less to reinforce positive behaviour in others, than you will to amplify your own negative response conditioning.

Though I would add that if you sent your message across in a state of absolute zen then perhaps the reaction would be beneficial all round.

Cro_on··on The majority of 18- to 29-year-olds in the US are now living with their parents
It's not pessimism!

I guess it wasn't worded clearly, but I meant that it's the only hope for a less wasteful economy.

EDIT to add: In the short term! Right now the infrastructure is totally oil based, and consumerism relies on ecological destruction. But I am definitely not saying that we can't have a global zero carbon everything you want economy. But that is a question that I do not have the patience or information to ponder seriously!

Cro_on··on The majority of 18- to 29-year-olds in the US are now living with their parents
I grew up on the farm, but have spent most of my adult life living in big cities. But I take a month or so home most years for a bit of farm work / harvest celebration.

Corono got me good traveling SEA in February, and have been now living and working at home since March. I could have never thought about living here beforehand. At least I always think that twenties and thirties are for the movement of the city, and then the farm work / home life can begin.

But having been somewhat forced to force myself to settle for an indefinite period, it is giving me much appreciation for a different kind of life. Building stuff, farming and a lot of cooking / baking / fermenting has brought out a real positivity, which now seems impossible to find in the city.

It's even got to the point where we've started inviting friends to come and live and work with us, and there seems to be that community feeling bubbling up all around.

Commuting and travel seem so weird to me by this point, and I know that the logistics are hell to try and rearrange the entire economy to be kind of segmented, but I'm starting to believe that this is the only realistic hope we have left.

Cro_on··on Fasting improves chemotherapy results and protects from side effects: study
i think it would be premature to assume that it had universality in the same way as something like intermittent fasting.

the possibly dangerous part is recommending that particular part of the book in response to a query asking for how long one needs to fast to feel the effects.

Cro_on··on Fasting improves chemotherapy results and protects from side effects: study
woow, other comment recommending fifteen day fast is a) dangerous and b) doesn't answer your question??

i fast twice per week for ~30 hours and drink copious amounts of tea and coffee. but intermittent fasting also works, the really important information is that ketosis can begin after as little as 12 hours, so basically fast for a minimum 14 hours if you want any effect at all, and everything after that is bonus. no extras in your coffees btw, though a splash of milk / coconut oil in your breakfast coffee is acceptable :)

Cro_on··on Fasting improves chemotherapy results and protects from side effects: study
understandably! it will no longer be thinking: human animal, could be dangerous..

but a tiger has evolved to be an apex predator, and not much else.

our predatory speciality is more about leverage than brute force, or scavenging rather than hunting. so i think the logic still applies that cognition can be improved in a way that is beneficial to modern humans. resourcefulness implying that resources are found / conjured when they appeared to be lacking?

Cro_on··on Fasting improves chemotherapy results and protects from side effects: study
i like to persuade people by having them imagine an isolated tiger who hasn't eaten anything in a week. by force of nature their sense of smell, hearing, etc. must all be heightened so as to ensure their survival.
Cro_on··on Fasting improves chemotherapy results and protects from side effects: study
If there were ever a panacea, it would be fasting. The more tight and widespread the research becomes, the more that we prove what humanity has known anecdotally throughout civilisation.

From being a Roman cure for epileptic seizures, through the integral practice in most religions, and to the 21st century where we start to prove that it increases both healthspan and lifespan.

I find it quite interesting that something so simple, which practically anybody can do, can have such a positive effect on one's life. You are literally healing and regenerating yourself by doing nothing! And instead of compounding medical bills you actually save money!

Thank you modern science for validating my no longer fringe medical beliefs :)

I knew about the smaller 2x4s, but now I have a sudden irrational anger that the 2x2s are not also smaller...

How 2x4s depreciate according to Twin Peaks: [0].

It appears in the US they start out at 2x4 and are trimmed down to make them look more finished.

EDIT to ask if OP means 'bigger' rather than 'smaller'?

Cro_on··on Eleanor Roosevelt's son authored mysteries in which his mother solves murders
The more intricate and symmetrical everything appears to me makes me increasingly sure(er) about the simulation.

But don't talk about it too much, their end goal of the experiment could be to discover the point at which a conscious entity realises that its world is fabricated.

Cro_on··on Google says its carbon footprint is now zero
I wouldn't agree that that is their raison d’être – their, or their competitors, existence is by now as fundamental as public infrastructure.
Cro_on··on Google says its carbon footprint is now zero
How about the carbon footprint of [insert arbitrary company]'s users while using their services?

It is totally nonsense and doesn't help at all.

Forgiving my own displeasure at google-everything, I think I can at least appreciate that they might not be all evil all the time – perhaps they could even influence people in a positive way?

Also excuse the related tangent and cherry picking, I am not condoning most of China's behaviour, but being big and bad doesn't necessarily mean that they cannot produce positive effects. [0]

Cro_on··on Ask HN: Where to meet non-technical cofounders?
right here on hn is / has the potential to be an ideal recruiting ground for non technical entrepreneurs.

i mean, what you're essentially looking for is the intellectual equivalent of a bar, or more conveniently, the halls of residence in a good university.

the reason universities are so ideal for finding cofounders is that perfect blend of infinite trajectory (minimal real world obligations) and equal standing. ideally, the place you're talking about has the capacity to integrate these things into a social sphere, without the media.

hn can fulfil this role more or less, and could do so to a greater extent if they had the incentive to. you have the karma / profile to judge someone's character and understanding, and their further contact if that's what they want.

it so happens that all of the job postings are for technical positions, but that is due to the fact that it is more likely for someone nontechnical to need an engineer than the other way around.

where else would the millennial steve jobs be lurking? (this is not exclusively rhetoric – if there is another answer that's not hn then go there)

if they're nowhere obvious, then they're hustling, and good luck finding them if you didn't go to school with them.

Cro_on··on Read Fewer Books
Just a quick way to say that I think a little exercise goes a long way :)
Cro_on··on Read Fewer Books
>Reading/hearing/watching anything that's not very good is entirely a choice.

Stimulating, contemporary, convenient. Pick two. It is as much of a choice as home made food over fast food is a choice. But it is not always convenient.

Personally I just cut out the contemporary stuff and there is an abundance of good material. When I find something modern and stimulating, it usually involved a certain amount of luck, a lot of trial and error, or just perseverance scouring wikipedia, magazines, blogs, whatever. Most people don't choose what they're into, it is dictated to them by producers. And there is a widespread fear of b&w / classic definition films, stringed classical instruments and literature.

Cro_on··on Read Fewer Books
Except that the universal adoption of sports would result in a net positive. The same cannot be said for pornography.

Also it makes just as much sense like this: 'sports is to sex as pornography is to war.'

Cro_on··on Professor suspended for saying 那个 nà ge
那(nà,that)个(gè,one)。 Also 'umm, uh, like, so'. English has the same thing, for example when you can't think of a word and just start with 'that, those'.

'Eh, what's that.. that, uh, the name of that function?'

It's pretty easy to mishear it, but 99% of the time you can see from the context that they're not just wildly dropping n-bombs..

Cro_on··on 'Super bacteria' survives for three years outside space station [video]
A BIG CHUNK turns into a range of manageable pieces over a star system. The bigger the chunk, the higher the probability of a piece existing that is both large enough needed to harbour microbial life and not so big as to melt and sterilise other planets.
Cro_on··on An AI Breaks the Writing Barrier
>The AI will figure out what the reader wants, and give it to her/him as intensely as possible.

Absolutely this. But the final form of this requires some input from the reader – front camera access and retina scanning presumably. It may evolve, without proper curtailing, (unidentifiable ads aside) to be a pretty powerful tool of motivation / pacification / manipulation.

>Eventually the content produced for particular readers will only be roughly literate, let alone clever or stylish.

Don't know about this, I have slightly more faith in people's ability of appreciation. Though I could be embarrassingly wrong.

I feel (a little hyperbolic allowances, if you will) it's in the books for an Infinite Jest type of entertainment to arise, be it in kindle or netflix form. That is, a piece of entertainment so excruciatingly entertaining, that people will literally and completely drop whatever it is they were doing before (or, you know, just miss a week of work for the sake of the most intimate and powerful writing they've ever experienced) and bask in the glories of their own personal god revealing truths of the universe to them.

Cro_on··on An AI Breaks the Writing Barrier
Not OP but it sounds like the basis of a tool to validate where the source material comes from, as well as to reveal how much has been elaborated upon in other versions.

Also, elaborating from / interpreting OP, to explore the parts of a given article which have absolute merit, and discovering patterns in effective language.

Obviously this won't be necessary knowledge for the sake of writing, though nonetheless interesting for linguists. But with the machines busying themselves with that, a good analysis and production could have a profound effect on spoken language. As in, you are what you read, and, unless you're still reading the classics, for a decent majority(?) that will necessitate an evolution in language. Not to mention the potential misuse by politicians and public speakers who will have a new level of delicate and gripping rhetoric.
