CrispyKerosene··on SonyShell – An effort to “SSH into my Sony DSLR”
Respectfully, its not that simple. I dont think you know what you are talking about.
CrispyKerosene··on SonyShell – An effort to “SSH into my Sony DSLR”
Sony doesnt make DSLR cameras, there is no 'reflex mirror'. These are mirrorless cameras, or Interchangeable Lens Cameras E-Mount (ICLE) as sony calls them
CrispyKerosene··on The Burnout Machine
Hows that boot taste?
CrispyKerosene··on Microsoft should be terrified of SteamOS
I dunno, Linux does what i tell it to do, where as i have to constantly fight Windows for really simple UI things that should be a given.

For example, my windows explorer keeps opening at some where location and shape, no amount of tinkering under the hood has successfully made it open full screen all the time. Ubuntu on the other hand just keeps it at what ever i set it at, because of course it does.

Little things like that are the only reason i switched the linux as a daily driver.

I keep the windows partition active because there is no linux alternative for photoshop and lightroom.

CrispyKerosene··on Lfgss shutting down 16th March 2025 (day before Online Safety Act is enforced)
Im still dirty about the NBN. Every now and then i go back home to visit and are rudely reminded that the network speeds suck. What do you mean i have to in wait for things to download? What do you mean I'm the the biggest city in the country and are on a copper line getting 5 Mbps....

Shame my mortgagor doesn't accept fulfillment and meaningfulness as payment options.
CrispyKerosene··on The Year of McDonald's
The author is so out of touch its maddening. The article is full of out dated and offensive generalizations.

"I find most convincing is that Mangione could be suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. I’ve met a lot of people like this in McDonald’s, because the franchise is often one of—if not the only—place in the “real world” where they can go, grab a cup out of the garbage can, sit at their corner table, and fit in, at least for an hour or two, without encountering too many dangers. It becomes, for many deeply troubled people, their only lifeline to normal society."

This is so offensive to anyone who is living with mental health challenges, and to anyone living in this late-stage capitalist society. Oh your questioning the status quo and killed a man responsible for one of the biggest death for profit schemes ever? You must be a crazy person who eats out of the garbage bn.

CrispyKerosene··on Show HN: I designed an espresso machine and coffee grinder
Some feedback - your market is undoubtedly going to be coffee nerds, and we are instantly turned off by the video of the very unappealing shot being pulled on this page https://velofuso.com/trefolo.

If any situation ever called for the early 2000's ideal expression of espresso, this is it. Break out the double city roast, grind it fine and pull some ristretto shots with tiger stripes. It might taste trash but it will make for much better marketing.

Kudos for making something cool. 5 second preheat is awesome.

CrispyKerosene··on A common urban intersection in the Netherlands (2018)
In defense of urban planners, we get good design and want to see more of it, but are usually beholden to the elected officials in the municipality who we require to vote in and ratify new design standards, or funding for projects.
CrispyKerosene··on A common urban intersection in the Netherlands (2018)
Its interesting how my brain immediately sees the ambiguous bike lane mixed in with pedestrians spaces, and thinks 'That's dangerous', but i am not conditioned to think the same way about bicycles being forced to mix with car traffic, or pedestrians forced onto very narrow sidewalks in the clearzone of roads.

Don't speed and you don't get tickets. Really not that complicated mate.
CrispyKerosene··on Australia's 3G Shutdown – Why your 4G/5G Phone is now Blocked
Not to mention the massive cost increase to those who previously bought yearly Zone 3 passes. I saw my transit costs increase overnight from $2200 per year to over $3500 with the introduction of Opal.

CrispyKerosene··on Trudeau government bans TikTok from operating in Canada
To play devils advocate - your are not wrong. We have see the rise of right-wing Trumpist style politics turn up in Australia, NZ, UK, etc. thanks in part to social media platforms algorithmically presenting it to those people.
CrispyKerosene··on Trudeau government bans TikTok from operating in Canada
Oh give it a rest with the nationalist fear mongering. This isn't about 'national security concerns'. That's the smoke and mirrors to get the populist support necessary to ban it. Meta and Google are feeling threatened that their dominance on North America is being tested and they are flexing their lobbying muscles.

CrispyKerosene··on One possible housing crisis solution? Public housing for all income levels
In most jurisdictions with the a land ownership model based on torrens title, this is inherent in the system, its called the Fee Simple Estate (with Crown or equiv being above this), with leasehold and life estates being below fee simple.

But you will find in most places the 'Crowns' abilities to exercise its ownership rights is fairly neutered and reserved for reasons the layman would refer to as eminent domain.

CrispyKerosene··on Why Did the Chicken Catch the Metro? 'Cause It Was Faster Than Crossing the Road
I can't speak for everyone. But it took me moving out of Australia to more walkable locations for me to realize how backwards it is.

Safe to say, when I visit home 8 strongly dislike it and usually have some very close calls with cars.

CrispyKerosene··on Why Did the Chicken Catch the Metro? 'Cause It Was Faster Than Crossing the Road
As a former Sydney resident, i would also like to point out for our North American audience that Australia doesnt have the same pedestrian right of way laws as N.A.

Pedestrians must give way to cars at all intersections and corners unless there is a marked ped crossing or traffic lights displaying a walk symbol.

Its not like NA in that every intersection or corner is a de-facto crosswalk.

In Sydney the police are also VERY active in enforcing and ticketing people who cross outside signals, or outside the walk signal. As a personal anecdote, i was fined in Sydney because the copper said i crossed on the flashing red walk symbol. He argued that in the time i took to step off the curb and before my foot landed on the roadway, that the signal changed.

CrispyKerosene··on Inside the "3 billion people" national public data breach
Troy mentions "data opt-out services. Every person who used some sort of data opt-out service was not present."

Anyone have experience with these sort of services? A search brings up a lot of scammy looking results. But if services exist to reduce my profile id be interested.

CrispyKerosene··on A Better Light Source for Scanning Color Negative Film
I hear you. Its pretty amazing what can be accomplished at home in your kitchen sink. But sometimes the devil is in the details and little things like a shift in sky colour across three or four rolls is enough the ruin a consistent look you want
CrispyKerosene··on A Better Light Source for Scanning Color Negative Film
To add onto this - I highly recommend you take advantage of light rooms Flat Filed Correction tool, it will eliminate lens vignetting which can cause issues when inverting. This article elaborates https://www.pixl-latr.com/defeating-the-orange-haze-lightroo...
CrispyKerosene··on A Better Light Source for Scanning Color Negative Film
Amazing write up and research - We need more of this!

My feeling is most people who are going to be interested in the slight increase in color accuracy are already drum scanning or using a virtual drum scanner like a Imacon flextight, and the team at Imacon has some crazy color scientists working on that as evidenced by the images it outputs.

The quest for the most true colors from C-41 feels like a pointless exercise in ways. When i print RA-4 in the darkroom i am working with a set of color correction filters and spinning dials to mix color on my enlarger head. The resulting print is my interpretation of the negative.

Back in the 1-Hour-Photo Minilab days, the tech was doing more or the less the same thing as well, or just hitting 'auto' and the Noritsu or Frontier was making adjustments to each frame before printing it.

If i am scanning the negatives with a camera and light source and after inverting, a greenish mask is still present, as like in the first conversion example they give, a few tweaks of a few sliders in photo editing software is enough to correct it.

The bigger factor at play here in my mind, is the availability of robust and consistent color developing services. Most indie labs these days are using C41 kits and at best a Jobo machine. There are very few labs even offering Dip and Dunk with a proper replenishment cycle with chemistry from the big players like Fujihunt or Kodak Flexicolor.

A a half a degree off temp, or a developer that near its rated capacity is enough to megafuck the resulting negatives.

There is an even worse trend of indie chemistry manufactures offering C41 kits with seemingly innocent replacements, that have huge consequences. For example one indie manufacturer in Canada is shipping there kits without a proper Color Developer (CD4) and instead using p-Phenylenediamine, which guarantees the incorrect formation of dyes

Sorry if i sound negative and got on a rant, i really do love this sort of research.

CrispyKerosene··on How do jewellers capture every last particle of gold dust? (2017)
This is why if you ever get jewellery repaired or resized, ask for the scrap to be returned.

Some less than reputable places will try to off-handedly say it was discarded. They don't lose anything.

CrispyKerosene··on Donating forks to the dining hall
I think most people are just unaware of how much distance is required between to cars at highway speeds to considered safe. A proper buffer would leave lots of room to absorb the extra cars and loss of speed. That the point, its flexible and elastic.
