CrampusDestrus··on Amish communities are adapting a surprising new technology in their homes
Just depend on the tightly interconnected global trade and manufacturing pipeline needed to bring those Chinese solar panels to the middle of nowhere!

At this point Ford trucks are even more justifiable

CrampusDestrus··on Why even let users set their own passwords?
in my locale's keyboard, curly brackets and the dollar sign are not obvious to input. they require an additional combo of keys that most people have no idea about.
CrampusDestrus··on Why even let users set their own passwords?
Here's why: the world is not able bodied Americans, so let us decide what password is best for us through our input methods

Tron has really nothing to do with this topic

It's not really an alternative. The appeal is the very organic and human look. The one you liked is certainly more apt for medieval stuff, but it still looks digital

Resources are finite. If college courses were recorded lessons or they just gave you a theory book and an exercises book, then of course we could automate everything. Just sign up, pay your fee and take the exams and once you're done you get the degree, even full remote. Your taxes will go towards professors and a fuck ton of TAs for questions and exercises and to keep the infrastructure running.

But we're not there yet

CrampusDestrus··on Apple Maps Gradually Winning over Google Maps Users, Report Suggests
Businesses should have in their best interest to add themselves to Apple Maps (which they can do). If you see something not showing just pop inside and tell the manager. That's what I did one time at a hairdresser's
CrampusDestrus··on Apple Maps Gradually Winning over Google Maps Users, Report Suggests
>You can't easily contribute to Apple Maps or add places

yes you can, you simply select an item on the map and report a problem. also they already hire third party agencies to add data to the map

CrampusDestrus··on Linux has nearly half of the desktop OS Linux market
We are clearly not talking about the market share of desktops because you are making a personal distinction between the Linux Desktop and the Linux Desktop Experience™.

ChromeOS is objectively Linux Desktop. RHEL desktop machines where only the IT department (and not the employees) has root access are objectively Linux Desktop.

CrampusDestrus··on Medicine is plagued by untrustworthy clinical trials
if researchers are so untrustworthy then what's your solution?
CrampusDestrus··on Medicine is plagued by untrustworthy clinical trials
"unrelated reasons" should not be an acceptable excuse though. either state the reason or it goes into the trash. and if they were private reasons you can still contact them to confirm they left on their own volition and/or they didn't finish the trial without getting into specifics. you only need one lie to suspect the whole thing

You can also contribute to Apple Maps. Be the change you want to see
CrampusDestrus··on Medicine is plagued by untrustworthy clinical trials
The researchers will have to have gone through some kind of third party agency to get the partecipants. This agency should be queried to see the number they report
CrampusDestrus··on Medicine is plagued by untrustworthy clinical trials
If we discover that we can´t trust researchers then what else are we left with? Doctor-patient privacy works if the doctor is truthful in their reporting
CrampusDestrus··on Medicine is plagued by untrustworthy clinical trials
that's such a vague question

for example, if you have 50 partecipants but only provide the multimedia evidence for 20 of them your study should be thrown out the window

CrampusDestrus··on Medicine is plagued by untrustworthy clinical trials
it's 2023, we have the means to cheaply record and store audio and video evidence for basically any medical experiment. we can record every patient reaction and opinion without relying on the reasearchers' hearsay. we also have the means to store and distribute all the binary/textual raw data gathered throughout the experiments.

maybe as an intermediate step we could make available all the recordings to the peer reviewers and only offer the raw experimental data bundled in the paper publicly? maybe in the future we can have 1TB studies without breaking a sweat? maybe all the money we give to publishers can be spent on servers to archive all the primary data so at least we aren't simply filling the pockets of MBAs?

CrampusDestrus··on Linux has nearly half of the desktop OS Linux market
ChromeOS is quite literally desktop Linux. If instead of a custom immutable Gentoo distribution they chose to base on Fedora Silverblue would it be any different? They would still need to offer Debian software through a layer of containerization and the user would still not have root level access.

Since ChromeOS is for casual users who will never need to install tools system-wide, I don't really see that much of a limitation in being able to only use things as non-root.

CrampusDestrus··on Firefox has surpassed Chrome on Speedometer
container tabs != tab grouping

tab grouping uses the same cookies everywhere, whereas container tabs provide isolated workspaces each with their own set of cookies

CrampusDestrus··on Linux has nearly half of the desktop OS Linux market
ChromeOS is an immutable Gentoo installation. The offered additional Linux environment is, understandably, based on Debian in order to allow for the most compatibility with .deb packages. Of course you can't natively install .deb packages on Gentoo and especially so if you don't have the rights to install spurious packages on the system, so Google "has to" offer the Linux experience in a roundabout way.

Of course, they could base ChromeOS on Debian directly and be done with it, but then they'd lose the incredible ease of custom tailoring to the hardware that Gentoo offers.

CrampusDestrus··on What's wrong with enterprise Linux
>Yes, we know that this is Oracle, but...

There might be different alignments, but you simply cannot write stuff like this and get away with it if any of your superiors disagree.

That page literally admits Oracle is an asshole company

CrampusDestrus··on What's wrong with enterprise Linux
Holy.... that Oracle linux page is so friendly it almost makes me puke. I can't believe anyone would fall for them
CrampusDestrus··on I don't know how I feel about email
If an email admin looks into your private correspondence your first thought is to get the hell out of his servers, whereas if a mastodon admin constantly monitors public posts from your and other instances then it doesn't seem like a big deal
CrampusDestrus··on I don't know how I feel about email
Email admins are not above this, but they have waaaayy less information available in order to ban stuff
CrampusDestrus··on I don't know how I feel about email
Comparing Mastodon (or ActivityPub-related endeavors) to email is silly.

Mastodon is an open platform where people can post things publicly.

Email is private communication between individuals.

Petty disputes exist on Mastodon because admins can see what's being posted and talked about in other instances and so can choose to ban them just for personal spite.

How about your instance admin peeping into everyone's DMs and seeing which servers hold the most people talking against the Democratic party and then blocking all those instances?

Would you like that?

Well, that's what would need to happen with email to achieve a same 1:1 comparison
