CraigRo··on The New Audi A3 Is Amess with In-Car Subscriptions
Curious how this will be enforced. The stripper kia soul was sold without cruise control. But if you simply added the correct button and changed a wire harness, voila! Similarly, the hardware is obviously on the car, so will you have the right to try to use it independent of the software subscription?

There are going to be some interesting cases....

CraigRo··on My co-founder wants to bring his wife as a late joining co-founder
>>> month ago, we welcomed a new research assistant into our group. Subsequently, she and my friend started a personal relationship and are planning to marry

This seems rather quick.

Would you hire her at 10% if she weren't sleeping with a co-founder? You could suggest to your co-founder that he give her some of his equity.

CraigRo··on A Bug in Early Creative Commons Licenses Has Enabled Copyleft Trolls (2022)
Clearly the next thing is to robosign grievances against lawyers.
CraigRo··on How China Miscalculated Its Way to a Baby Bust
The basic cohort component model has been well known for at least 100 years. Changes to the behavior of cohorts is hard to predict over generations, but usually somewhat mean reverting despite the exponential nature of the process. Predicting a future population of 400m is every bit as unrealistic as 4b.
CraigRo··on The IRS has all our tax data. Why doesn't its new website use it?
My understanding is that the IRS internal systems are still some derivative of the 1965 Cobol / IBM mainframe. This is not easy to change, and it is unlikely that anyone actually knows how it all works together.
CraigRo··on Judge voids Elon Musk's $50B compensation package in Tesla
"Musk launched a self-driving process, recalibrating the

speed and direction along the way as he saw fit"

CraigRo··on U.S. army drops requirement for high school diploma (2022)
Charles Fefferman skipped high school, went to college at 13, and got his PhD in math at 19. The Maryland department of education tracked down his parents, and accused them of not sending him to his; when they found out about what he was doing, they sent him a complimentary diploma.

I'm sure the military has identified a pool of people that were excluded, but that they can use. Same with the people with tattoos

CraigRo··on Trader Joe's Follows SpaceX in Arguing US Labor Board Is Unconstitutional
Big nothing. You list all possible defenses or lose them
CraigRo··on Evidence EVs are a fading fad is rolling in fast as Tesla GM and Ford cut prices
Evs were supposed to be cheaper to produce then gas cars. Tesla margins show that. Cut prices 20% and see what happens
CraigRo··on K/simple: a tiny K interpreter for educational purposes by Arthur Whitney
There were a lot of different and kind of weird attempts at this in the industry. The basic problem is that recalculating DAGs and monte-carlo simulations using a ton of floating point math was extremely expensive. Excel was way too slow, C++ required expert programmers and much better organization of programming teams to figure how to coordinate cached intermediate values. MS went with APL, which reduced a lot of the boilerplate and allowed for relatively easy memoization. GS went with SecDB which treated computation as memoized DAGs. Not sure what the others did
CraigRo··on How a corporate duopoly ruined skiing
Publicly owned areas suchb as whiteface Cannon bellayre etc are still on the 95-125 for a walkup weekend adult ticket, with some significant discounts for multiple days and younger/ older people
CraigRo··on Enthusiasts have brought IBM's legendary buckling spring keyboard back (2017)
Anyone know what happened after? Haven't seen a lot of these at work
CraigRo··on Why don't grocery stores stock pawpaw fruit?
I bought a significant fraction of NY's crop one year. Also have found them in the wild. Issues are

-- perishable -- incredibly easily bruised, so hard to pack and ship -- wildly varying sizes -- hard to prepare -- big seeds -- very short season

Definitely worth trying though.

CraigRo··on SF's Market Street Subway Is Running on Reagan-Era Floppy Disks
There are floppy disk emulators that allow you to use USB keys. They don't cost much
CraigRo··on Infinite Jest
I'm curious who had actually finished it
CraigRo··on NY Governor vetoes ban on noncompete clauses, waters down LLC transparency bill
Has any fast food worker ever been sued for violating one of these?
CraigRo··on NY Governor vetoes ban on noncompete clauses, waters down LLC transparency bill
I was given knowledge of specific trading strategies that, if taken to another company, would be competed away. Nobody would invest money in finding these if a competitor could buy all the IP by hiring a single employee
CraigRo··on The Age Gappers They say they're happy. Why is it so hard to believe them?
The idea that the younger partner can't make his or her own decisions is deeply disturbing. It reflects a will to power and a scary conformist streak my ostensibly liberal people; somehow they seem to have forgotten that the entire premise of the sexual revolution was that people should be free to do as they like in the privacy of their own homes
CraigRo··on The Old New Way to Provide Cheap Housing
Definitely a good idea. Unfortunately, it only works if evictions are cheap and fast. Cue the anti eviction crew...
CraigRo··on Do You Still Have the Right to a Jury Trial?
If you have a million dollars for discovery and motion practice yes. Otherwise no.
CraigRo··on Tesla launches Supercharger congestion fee at $1 per min at 90% charge
Lack of free supercharging! Or that the supercharging is no longer free enough.
CraigRo··on Tesla launches Supercharger congestion fee at $1 per min at 90% charge
Wait for the lawsuit by people with free supercharging
CraigRo··on Why You Should Be Able to Sell Your Kidney
Can't wait for drug addicts to sell a kidney, have the other one get injured, and then apply for a transplant.

But letting estates sell kidneys seems like a good idea

CraigRo··on Credit Card Points Are Being Paid for by the Poor
There's some competition. Amex charges the highest interchange fees, and as a result, a lot of places don't take Amex. Ditto with discover
CraigRo··on Ask HN: Did Elon/Twitter face any consequences after it stopped paying rent?
They sold the company for 3x what anyone else would pay for it
CraigRo··on Ask HN: Did Elon/Twitter face any consequences after it stopped paying rent?
Lucent had a floor turned over for roller hockey. I assume some dot com in the early 00s gave up space and the employees used it for paintball
CraigRo··on Sunday service suspended at all NYPL locations
We lost net 10 of them costing hundreds of millions of dollars already. Short term rentals were basically banned outright. Not very many vacant real estate holdings, and how are you going to prove that they were sufficiently vacant -- going to roust them all at night?

City needs to actually get its act together to become more efficient.

CraigRo··on Why Mushroom Suits Won't Work and How to Apply Cemetery Studies
The clear message is that if you run the body through a large grinder before burial, it will degrade far faster.
CraigRo··on Oregon decriminalized hard drugs – it isn't working
The lawn darts were sharp and a bit hard to control. Basically like throwing a giant knife up in the air. Guns and bows have fairly well established training and safety regimes (i.e don't point them at someone), and model rockets get ignited 30' away

But throwing a dart high in the air and hitting a wandering 2 year old actually did happen, and there was no real attempt to only their the darts in one direction

CraigRo··on America Stole All of Nazi Germany's Technology After the War
Stole is the wrong word here. Took as reparations for the technology, and invited for the human capital. Nobody gave Werner von Braun the choice of death or NASA
