CraftThatBlock··on Microsoft offers $100k to hack its custom Linux OS
Ctrl+F "Ubuntu" - No results.

Seems to be using parts of code from Ubuntu, but that doesn't mean it is Ubuntu.

CraftThatBlock··on Dart team posts an example of fast code with 22ms for a “Hello world”
This is like saying a game runs at 0.1fps because it took a couple seconds to load at the start.

This is initial load time. Printing likely account for <1% of the actual time, the rest being initializing the program

Can you provide a source? I could find any references looking at the source. Also, that's not an Ubuntu version

Lots of bashing in this thread, but to clarify a bit:

The Dart VM is roughly based on V8's internals. Running dart alone would be similar to running node, which needs to initialize the VM, parse the code, and run it. This is obviously slower than a pre-compiled binary.

dart2native brings it half-way to native, by doing parsing and initialization, and saving a memory snapshot right before executing the main function. This greatly reduce startup time (and is the same technique that makes Flutter apps start fast), but still not as fast as a binary, since it is loading the snapshots and doing some initialization.

This is usually fast enough, because once the initialization is ran, the following code will run fast. This is a constant initialization loading time, and doesn't represent anything.

Saying 22ms doesn't mean anything, and feels like a misinformed statement.

Dart overall is a pleasant language, and it is somewhat unique that it provides multiple ways to run. You can run with dart, dart2native, dart2js, and I believe there's one for ARM (for Flutter). This allows you to choose the best for your target platform

Thank you, very interesting! I use IntelliJ mostly, and this is something I wish was available on that platform

I hope they allow to run the VMs on local hardware. I would love to use my desktop resources (more than they are offering, which is still generous) for this feature.

I think Chromebooks are going to be a great use for this. Lightweight client but full editor and environment, with no hassle.

You can also copy the image to clipboard and basically paste it anywhere.

Oh my bad, I thought you meant the x-axis

Starting at 10K makes the most sense because getting from 0-10K may be short or long, but after it should reflect the rate of infection more relatively
CraftThatBlock··on Prisma 2.0 Beta: Type-safe Database Access
Very interesting! I do usually prefer using a query builder or raw SQL over an ORM, and will definitely check this one
CraftThatBlock··on Prisma 2.0 Beta: Type-safe Database Access
How does this compare to TypeORM? First time hearing about this project, and it looks interesting
CraftThatBlock··on Markdown is an excellent choice for documentation
MDX is also pretty nice for more advance formatting, it's Markdown + React. Sometimes, you want to write Markdown but still need to escape to React for custom behaviours, and this does it wonderfully.
CraftThatBlock··on Show HN: Screen – screen sharing for remote work, by the cofounder of Screenhero
Seems like .so is the new .io. Another product using it is Notion (which is pretty awesome)

1080p is basically 2K, only 80 more pixels wide
CraftThatBlock··on Launch HN: Fly.io (YC W20) – Deploy app servers close to your users
Also a map would be a great visualization. A list doesn't really tell me much without a frame a reference

It looks like the pricing is actually seconds base, so you would have 2 * 3600s * 0.000001015$/s = 0.007308$
CraftThatBlock··on Lesspass – open-source stateless password manager
Created something similar using the Masterpassword protocol: https://masterpassx.org

(Also open-source: https://github.com/Cretezy/MasterPassX)

CraftThatBlock··on New in PHP 8
I'm a bit confused. I thought PHP 7 introduced a JIT, hence why it was much faster (in some cases ~5x faster). How is it different from the PHP 8 JIT?

I always assumed that HHVM is what brought JITs to PHP originally, followed by PHP itself.

CraftThatBlock··on Palindrome Day 20200202
What is "most palindromic"? Wouldn't 11/11/1111 be the "most"?
CraftThatBlock··on How I format SQL code
WHERE TRUE would also work, so would WHERE 1 I believe
CraftThatBlock··on Tesla Financial Results 2019 Q4
The logo for Mullen is incredibly similar to Tesla's.

Also, Supercharger v3 goes up to 250kW

CraftThatBlock··on “This is why I use ad blockers and a pi-hole server”
From what I understand yes
CraftThatBlock··on “This is why I use ad blockers and a pi-hole server”
I do the same and together they work the best I find. Ad-blockers act at a different level than DNS blockers so can catch things that the DNS didn't (DNS only had domain, while ad-blockers have the full path)
CraftThatBlock··on Deploy your side-projects at scale for basically nothing – Google Cloud Run
You're right, thanks for letting me know

Cloud Functions isn't 1:1 IIRC, once a Function is booted it keeps serving more requests once warm.
CraftThatBlock··on Deploy your side-projects at scale for basically nothing – Google Cloud Run
Netlify (without extra features) is simply static hosting. With Lambda, it does add server-side code.

Cloud Run is to run a fully custom server, as in an API. It can obviously do more than Netlify, however Netlify really excels at static + some server code, while Cloud Run is extremely flexible (server in any language, more resources, etc)

CraftThatBlock··on Flutter vs. Other Mobile Development Frameworks: A UI and Performance Experiment
Flutter uses the Chrome rendering engine (Skia) and scrolling is fully fluid (in release mode). React native uses native views (if implemented correctly) and is usually very fluid too
CraftThatBlock··on Flutter vs. Other Mobile Development Frameworks: A UI and Performance Experiment
You can extract the non-Flutter parts to a seperate Dart package and compile it to JavaScript to share between both web and Flutter itself
CraftThatBlock··on Docker-slim: Minify your Docker container image without changing anything
Mostly compatibility. GNU's libc and Alpine's libc implementation should match the same ABI but might not be 100% the same
