CorrectHorseBat··on How to Store Data on Paper?
>this case they're not directly using the color to store information, they just have three differently colored QR codes overlayed on top of each other. With that method you can use a filter to separate them back out and you've got three separate QR codes worth of data in one place. The way they're added ends up using more than just three colors in that example.

That's only true if you can print and read colors in a higher resolution/don't destroy information at 3x the density with color, I'm not sure if that's generally true.

>If you were truly to use colored dots to store binary information without worrying about using a standard like QR, I think you'd be going from base-2 (white and black) to base-3 (red, blue, green) or more likely base-4 (white, red, blue, green) or even base-8 (if you were willing to add multiple colors on top of each other) in which case yeah you'd have way more than just 3x the data density.

Base 8 is exactly 3x the data density. (Log(8)/log(2))

CorrectHorseBat··on How to Store Data on Paper?
Adding 3 colors would make it base 5 (BW+rgb) and give log(5)/log(2) or about 2.3 times the information per dot.
CorrectHorseBat··on How large should your sample size be?
If you go to the extreme, say you sample 100M people of 100M and 100M of 8B then the first number is exact and the second has a very small error. So the error is a function of sample size and population.

In not extreme cases when your population is much bigger than the sample size you're correct that it doesn't really make any difference.

CorrectHorseBat··on How large should your sample size be?
No, that's a whole different problem which bigger samples don't solve (unless you're getting close to sampling the whole population)

I think you replied to the wrong comment?
CorrectHorseBat··on Is TfL losing the battle against heat on the Victoria line?
They have added ventilation to the tunnels, it's mentioned in the article. It's more than just a couple bowling sized holes, but apparently still not enough

Do you have an example of a correct explanation according to you? Why should we believe you are correct and everyone else isn't?

Do you know if the code from the blogpost you mentioned is publicly available? I don't think I could find it but I'd love to give it a try

I've got it from here: https://gitlab.winehq.org/winehq/appdb/-/wikis/Rating-Defini...

We can argue all day over what a rating means, but if it would work without a tweak I'd say it should be rated platinum. (The only other thing I know is missing is Xbox live login, but I don't really care about that)

CorrectHorseBat··on The Windows Subsystem for Linux is now open source
Oh interesting, I always wondered what the underlying issue was and why downloading some obscure looking dll solves it.

For a practical solution, just using the Windows dlls seems to work fine. Without AoE2:DE goes out of sync immediately, with I've played hour long games.

CorrectHorseBat··on The Windows Subsystem for Linux is now open source
It's been several months since I played but getting ucrtbase.dll always worked for me and it was the only thing I ever had to do for the game. You need to redownload it after every update because it gets wiped though.

Oos can till happen, but as you said it can also happen on Windows, hard to blame Wine for that.

Since gold means "works as good as Windows with workarounds" I think that's a correct rating.

CorrectHorseBat··on Microsoft Teams will soon block screen capture during meetings
I would say it's completely different. A camcorder movie has bad quality, most people would rather pay for a good quality movie than a free camcorder one.

For sensitive data on the other hand quality doesn't matter as long as it's readable.

CorrectHorseBat··on A $20k American-made electric pickup with no paint, no stereo, no screen
Yes but since incomplete combustion is inverse correlated with fuel efficiency (unburned fuel is wasted fuel), it's not really a trade off. What is a trade off is NO emissions vs fuel efficiency. Burning your fuel oxygen rich will burn of more fuel, but also makes more NO (due to higher temperatures if I remember correctly).

It's apparently possible for boron doping.

I think because phosphorus is bigger than silicium you'll get too many defects in the crystal, while with the smaller boron it is not an issue.

>If they actually were issuing this fine because of violations of the DSA they wouldn't be afraid of retaliation from the US.

What makes you believe that? The current US administration doesn't care about laws in their own country, why would they care about laws in other countries?

CorrectHorseBat··on Earth's clouds are shrinking, boosting global warming
No they don't, you need to divide, not multiply just like you would with every other unit. 1l of rain every day is 1l/day, not 1l * day . Which means Watt per day is J/s^2

None of the gatekeepers are EU companies.

You might say that's proof of it being unfair, but can you name a EU company which should be one? I can't really think of one, US companies are just so much bigger on the internet, even in the EU.

Looking at the other law you mentioned, GDPR, there are many EU companies receiving GDPR fines.

Also (and I think more important, but I might be wrong), we don't perceive light intensity linear but logarithmic. A 50% duty cycle does appear brighter than half as bright. A 90% duty cycle might be only barely perceptible.
CorrectHorseBat··on But how to get to that European cloud?
It looks like you're agreeing with me that it has nothing to do with bending over backwards?
CorrectHorseBat··on But how to get to that European cloud?
I kinda disagree on both accounts. Many many people give their all for less than that. More money will get you better (foreign) talent, but the correlation between pay and effort is much lower.

I work in the EU for an American company. The consensus here is Americans work more, but not harder. We deliver better work in less time.

The edge Americans have is a can do attitude and not being afraid of failure.

CorrectHorseBat··on But how to get to that European cloud?
Why would people need to bend over backwards to build good things?

That's a very naive take, not using their products doesn't stop them from negatively impacting society. Look at what Musk is doing over the whole world (and the other two aren't much better, just not as obvious about it). It's not about being fair or jealous or whatever, a single individual having so much wealth and thus power is simply not healthy for society.
