Copenjin··on Java Virtual Threads Ate My Memory: A Web Crawler's Tale of Speed vs. Memory
Async, green threads, etc... can be useful tools but are never the out of the box solution for not having to think about concurrency and program flow. Even if people keep thinking they are. Learn how to reason about concurrency, there is no way to avoid it.
Copenjin··on XAI's Grok suddenly can't stop bringing up "white genocide" in South Africa
I hope that all those that downvoted will end up working for the very mentally stable Elon, good luck guys. It would be a learning experience.
Copenjin··on XAI's Grok suddenly can't stop bringing up "white genocide" in South Africa
That weirdo is really improving all products he touches. Please use words correctly and demand a government able to gracefully fix poverty, crime and public safety issues. Every issue is fixable with enough effort and money. Dumbed down discourse and nonsense ranting never fixed anything.
Copenjin··on Clean Code vs. A Philosophy Of Software Design
Force it on people, you'll see how much it works. Getting another pair of eyes on the code that you wrote is useful, but it's not free (effort, tolerance) and it's not for everyone. Just do proper code reviews. Middle ground.
Copenjin··on Clean Code vs. A Philosophy Of Software Design
Thanks for the correction, my opinion on the lack of credentials is that in the early days you just didn't need them to become popular, so little content that no one checked. I bit like it's happening nowadays with the anime profile pic twitter accounts acting like they invented AI, with zero code or achievements being shown.
Copenjin··on Clean Code vs. A Philosophy Of Software Design
And a lot of people doesn't understand how dangerous shuffling parameters is, especially in languages that do not have named parameters...
Copenjin··on Clean Code vs. A Philosophy Of Software Design
The scenario NEVER comes up in the future as it was originally expected. You'll end up having to remove and refactor a lot of code. Abstractions are useful only used sparingly and when they don't account for handling something that doesn't even exist yet.
Copenjin··on Clean Code vs. A Philosophy Of Software Design
You just need to work on one project built by someone that implemented Uncle Bob recommendations blindly when the books came out to know how much they are worth. There were some low hanging fruits to pick at the time regarding trying to be better at software engineering and he generated some text about them.

Full of terrible advices, he never wrote anything significant (in scope and notoriety) during his time as a software engineer like many other prominent authors at the beginning of the agile era. The success is only the result of a wave of junior devs searching for some sort of guidance, something that there is a never-ending need for.

Horrible recommendations that produced a lot of code that is a pain to work on with the abundant amount of indirection it has. Really painful guys.

Copenjin··on Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code
Yes, thinking the same thing here.
Copenjin··on Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code
Very good, Code is extremely nice but as others have said, if you let it go on its own it burns through your money pretty fast.

I've made it build a web scraper from scratch, figuring out the "API" of a website using a project from github in another language to get some hints, and while in the end everything was working, I've seen 100k+ tokens being sent too frequently for apparently simple requests, something feels off, it feels like there are quite a few opportunities to reduce token usage.

Copenjin··on Apple Debuts iPhone 16e
8Gb of ram, for those wondering.
Copenjin··on U.S. women are outpacing men in college completion in every major group
Dear bufferoveflow, I didn't refer to any conspiracy and didn't talk about numbers but about silly conclusions. and I'm not "victimizing" for internet downvotes that just say something about the maturity of those who clicked the arrow. I mean, it's a very depressing way to protest. If a problem has been identified let's fix it with orientation programs that actually fix the issue (explain job opportunities, give them introductory courses about STEM topics, help them where needed with their studies or improve the environment they live in, ecc...), let's not indulge in crazy stuff about scary feminists with horns. I don't have to sell books or courses, I don't have to sell stories and agree with the nonsensical narratives of someone else.

You cannot downvote because the comment is too old, the 2(lol) downvotes I got and that were cancelled by more upvotes came from those that replied to this shitty thread while it was still fresh.

No gaslighting man, I really don't care, I just don't like like reading what from my point of view looks like stuff that a kid would write. I'm an adult ffs. This BIG problem of the percentage if it's real (don't know, don't care) can be solved in 1/2 year.

Copenjin··on U.S. women are outpacing men in college completion in every major group
Again, I'm not american but I'm well aware of the silly stuff you are being fed to by influencers selling male victimhood content. Stop listening to that crap. Your downvotes will not change anything.

As someone else said, the only problem is the lack of real positive role models (people who build, have ethic and do something useful with their lives), that have been replaced by pathetic characters like JP and other nobodies that only sell victimhood or get rick quick fantasies on the internet.

Copenjin··on U.S. women are outpacing men in college completion in every major group
It's a global tendency, even if the effects are slightly different.
Copenjin··on U.S. women are outpacing men in college completion in every major group
Exactly, this is one of the actual problems.
Copenjin··on U.S. women are outpacing men in college completion in every major group
What did I just read. I'm not american but I doubt that this is the actual reality you guys live in.

Feels like you watch too many of the wrong youtube influencers.

Copenjin··on Remember That DNA You Gave 23andMe?
It depends on the ToS they had at the time, when they started they explicitly had protections (privacy, data handling) only for US customers pointing to some local law, no details on how the data and samples from outside the us would have been handled. And that's why I never used they service. I think the GDPR road is well worth a try, good luck.
Copenjin··on Google says AI Olympics ad 'tested well' before inspiring outrage
Outrage for this? Really?
Copenjin··on Ask HN: Has anyone successfully pivoted from web dev to AI/ML development?
Exactly.
Copenjin··on Let's Stop Asking "Why Do You Want to Work for Us?" In Interviews
The question is not completely useless if the interviewer does not expect to receive in any case an answer that shows how much cool aid has been absorbed. Most companies are just that, a place to work and earn some money, regardless of how enthusiastic the company some internal fanboys are. But I don't agree that the biggest reason is mostly money, there could be some good answers to that question.
Copenjin··on South Korean telecom company attacks torrent users with malware
Not best Korea anymore.
Copenjin··on Ask HN: Why do message queue-based architectures seem less popular now?
I've yet to see the numbers you list live, but in addition to pure uptime, I've seen a lot of instances where it has been used as the default communication channel instead of proper RPCs, with devastating effects on the long run from the point of view of issues, debugging, predictability, etc...

It's being overused where it has no reason to be, good and simple on paper, awful in the way many are using it. Most of the times, you don't need it.

Copenjin··on Ask HN: Why do message queue-based architectures seem less popular now?
I really hope that people are slowly starting to understand that using kafka and turning it in a single point of failure (yes, it fails) of your architecture is not a good idea.

This pattern has it's uses, but if you are using it everywhere, every time you have some sort of notifications because "it's easy" or whatever, you are likely doing it wrong and you will understand this at some point and it will not be pleasant.

Copenjin··on Optical PCIe 7.0 connection hits 128 GT/s
Thanks.
Copenjin··on Optical PCIe 7.0 connection hits 128 GT/s
No, GT/s is not, regardless of the downvotes, please point me to the standard that defines them if I'm wrong. Let's keep using the boring GB/s since we are still talking about data.
Copenjin··on Cyber Scarecrow
Very nice and well executed idea, but I think that in many cases this could be overestimating the competence of the attacker.
Copenjin··on Sam Altman is not on YC's board. So why claim to be its chair?
At this point, I hope this is well known.
Copenjin··on Optical PCIe 7.0 connection hits 128 GT/s
Can't they use proper units? I refuse to even read this.
Copenjin··on French court orders Google, Cloudflare, Cisco to poison DNS to stop piracy
> In the past 3 years or so they have repeatedly proven that to be a lie; they weren’t able to have their cake and eat it too.

Yeah, this is what I was referring to, not sure about the reputation but they are still popular, that's for sure.
