CooCooCaCha··on GPT-5.2 derives a new result in theoretical physics
Depends on what you think is valid.

The process you’re describing is humans extending our collective distribution through a series of smaller steps. That’s what the “shoulders of giants” means. The result is we are able to do things further and further outside the initial distribution.

So it depends on if you’re comparing individual steps or just the starting/ending distributions.

CooCooCaCha··on Claude Opus 4.6
It’s really not that crazy.

React itself is a frontend-agnostic library. People primarily use it for writing websites but web support is actually a layer on top of base react and can be swapped out for whatever.

So they’re really just using react as a way to organize their terminal UI into components. For the same reason it’s handy to organize web ui into components.

CooCooCaCha··on Advancing AI Benchmarking with Game Arena
CoT is upstream of building a chess engine.

Chess engines don’t grow on trees, they’re built by intelligent systems that can think, namely human brains.

Supposedly we want to build machines that can also think, not just regurgitate things created by human brains. That’s why testing CoT is important.

It’s not actually about chess, it’s about thinking and intelligence.

CooCooCaCha··on If you put Apple icons in reverse it looks like someone getting good at design
That's hard to answer because clearly my opinion is disconnected from most people. If this thread didn't exist I wouldn't give it more than a second though "that's the new icon ok"
CooCooCaCha··on If you put Apple icons in reverse it looks like someone getting good at design
I honestly couldn't care less if my UI has soul. I just want it to work and get out of the way.
CooCooCaCha··on If you put Apple icons in reverse it looks like someone getting good at design
I've honestly never had an issue with using flat design. Or if I have, it hasn't been enough of an issue to remember. I don't mean this in a judgemental way, just that I legitimately don't understand why people care.
CooCooCaCha··on If you put Apple icons in reverse it looks like someone getting good at design
It's utility vs soul.
CooCooCaCha··on If you put Apple icons in reverse it looks like someone getting good at design
I understand some people like skeuomorphism and that's fine. But I've noticed a certain arrogance skeuomorphism fans tend to have as if it's THE right way to design and everyone else is wrong.
CooCooCaCha··on Sergey Brin's Unretirement
To nitpick a little bit, it’s not just feeling needed by others, but also doing things that are meaningful.
CooCooCaCha··on Please just try HTMX
Using built-in browser apis. Not sure what you’re getting at.
CooCooCaCha··on Please just try HTMX
Plain react is arguably just as simple if not simpler than jquery.

And I’m not saying every site needs to be an SPA. I’m saying if I can write everything from a simple site to an SPA in a single framework then why not use that for everything?

CooCooCaCha··on Please just try HTMX
Hello world in react is just a few lines of code that mounts a react component to a dom element. There should be zero network requests beyond the initial download of html and js.

You’re either doing something wrong or not actually doing a hello world.

CooCooCaCha··on Please just try HTMX
What I don’t get is why I’d use it if I can’t write a reasonable complex SPA with it.

React is easy for small websites so why would I use a separate framework when I can use one framework for everything?

CooCooCaCha··on It's all about momentum
I agree, I’d much rather someone state their ideas in an assertive tone rather than pad their ideas with a bunch of caveats.

I actually find it annoying and actively skip those parts because they can take paragraphs of text or minutes of a video.

Some people are too quick to make things about themselves.

CooCooCaCha··on Kaiju – General purpose 3D/2D game engine in Go and Vulkan with built in editor
Yes and no. It’s true that some people really only care about a slice of the process, but if you’ve been around the gamedev scene long enough you’ll also see people working on very technically ambitious projects while they’re fooling themselves thinking they’re making a game.

I just need a few more years working on my 4D non-euclidian voxel MMO engine before I can make my game!

CooCooCaCha··on Google Titans architecture, helping AI have long-term memory
I mean ideally AI would be resilient to junk, don't you think?
CooCooCaCha··on Why we built Lightpanda in Zig
This post is aimed at developers and hackernews is a technically focused forum. So I care as a developer.

If language doesn’t matter then why not go build something in fortran or brainfuck?

CooCooCaCha··on The New AI Consciousness Paper
I've sometimes wondered if consciousness is something like a continuous internal narrative that naturally arises when an intelligent system experiences the world through a single source (like a body). That sounds similar to what you're saying.

Regardless, I think people tend to take consciousness a bit too seriously and my intuition is consciousness is going to have a similar fate to the heliocentric model of the universe. In other words, we'll discover that consciousness isn't really "special" just like we found out that the earth is just another planet among trillions and trillions.

CooCooCaCha··on Vibe Code Warning – A personal casestudy
Perhaps you're confusing enjoyment with necessity. Iteration is necessary to build a good game, but I want to minimize iteration time as much as possible so I can finish the game.

In that sense, the process is the enemy. A long, laborious process kills games.

CooCooCaCha··on Vibe Code Warning – A personal casestudy
I’m the opposite. I’d rather spend more time in a flow-like state where I’m dreaming of possibilities and my thoughts come to life quickly and effortlessly.

I often find tools frustrating because they are imperfect and even with the best tools you inevitably have to break from your flow sometimes to do stuff in a more manual way.

If a tool could take care of building while I remain in flow I’d be in heaven.

CooCooCaCha··on Vibe Code Warning – A personal casestudy
That’s interesting because i love computers and parts of programming. Algorithms are fascinating and I get a deep sense of satisfaction when my program works.

But at the same time I find programming to be a frustrating experience because I want to spend as much time as possible thinking about what I’m trying to build.

In other words I’d rather spend time in the dream-like space of possibilities, and iterating on my thoughts quickly than “dropping down” to reality and thinking through how I’m actually going to build it, what algorithms to use, how to organize code, etc.

Because of that I’ve found vibe coding to be enjoyable even if it’s not perfect.

CooCooCaCha··on Study identifies weaknesses in how AI systems are evaluated
Not the person you replied to, but I'm a programmer and up until ~3 weeks ago I really only used AI for auto-complete, looking up API information, and constructing arcane CLI commands.

I decided to take a leap and use AI as much as possible to complete a ticket at work. Now, 3 weeks later AI is writing 90% of my code.

Granted, I'm not sitting back sipping on a latte while AI does my job. It's a very interactive process, I spend more time reviewing code and going back and forth with the AI to get the result I want. But it's become surprisingly good.

I wouldn't say I'm anywhere close to 10x more productive, but perhaps 50%.

CooCooCaCha··on The state of SIMD in Rust in 2025
Rust doesn’t have a BDFL so there’s nobody with the power to push things through when they’re good enough.

And since Rust basically sells itself on high standards (zero-cost abstractions, etc.) the devs go back and forth until it feels like the solution is handed down from the heavens.

CooCooCaCha··on Study: MRI contrast agent causes harmful metal buildup in some patients
It’s why leaders often speak in certainties. X is bad, Y is good type messaging.

It’s also why some people gravitate towards overly-confident narcissists. They feel a sense of comfort when someone seems to have all the answers, even if they don’t.

CooCooCaCha··on AV2 video codec delivers 30% lower bitrate than AV1, final spec due in late 2025
The idea that entertainment is selfish because it doesn’t produce anything is offensive to the core.
CooCooCaCha··on GPT-5o-mini hallucinates medical residency applicant grades
I don’t understand the issue with the word “hallucination”.

If a model hallucinates it did do something wrong, something that we would ideally like to minimize.

The fact that it’s impossible to completely get rid of hallucinations is separate.

An electric car uses electricity, it’s a fundamental part of its design. But we’d still like to minimize electricity usage.

CooCooCaCha··on AV2 video codec delivers 30% lower bitrate than AV1, final spec due in late 2025
Entertainment is becoming increasingly customizable and personalized. It’ll get to the point, like you said, that we’re not watching the same movie, playing the same game, etc.

It feels like we’re losing something, a shared experience, in favor of an increasingly narcissistic attitude that everything needs to shapeable to individual preferences instead of accepting things as they are.

CooCooCaCha··on Figure 03, our 3rd generation humanoid robot
Why are you fixated on laziness and shame when it comes to tedious household tasks?

Why is it so important to you that people fold their own clothes and wash their own dishes?

Why do you idolize a life of increased drudgery?

CooCooCaCha··on Zig builds are getting faster
I was working on a 2d game in Rust, and no joke the debug build was 10x slower than release.
CooCooCaCha··on Social anxiety isn't about being liked
I’ve never been good at banter so this speaks to me.

But it’s interesting to think that when people like you, they tend to want more from you and that leads to social obligations. And you can either go along with these social obligations or decline and come off as rude.

So in a sense, social connections give people some amount of control over your life and that can feel restricting and draining sometimes.

Even something as simple as a text message can be thought of as a task that someone gave you without your consent. And if you don’t respond within a certain time window then you’re rude and risk damaging the relationship. Or if you respond poorly that can damage it as well.

Sometimes I wonder if this is social anxiety or just being extra aware of the realities of life.
