ConsiderCrying··on Hippos have become an invasive species in Colombia
What about tranqulizing them and moving the specimens to an area where they're native? That wouldn't harm them and would solve the problem. Might not even be as costly as neutering them, I suppose.
ConsiderCrying··on Facebook to Pay $550M to Settle Facial Recognition Suit
While it's very sad to hear this staggering sum called a 'rounding error' and a blip on Facebook's radar, I'm still happy about this news. It shows that fighting back legally is possible so the day we all have to wear recognition-scrambling patches is not as nigh as it could be. Just wish other places would amp up their privacy laws so Facebook would get more than occasional slaps on the wrist.
ConsiderCrying··on The Yang Gang and Its Bots
I don't think we should be looking for a candidate who wins on the strength of Twitter bots, that's pretty much impossible (and that's a good thing.)

Instead, we should consider the fact that all these bots make a lot of information noise and that's a problem to how we view candidates. With enough bots spamming fake articles or posting links that favor the candidate/smear his opponents, they muddy the waters and make it harder to find real information. This alone won't win anybody elections but it brings prominence to smaller candidates, makes it harder to find legitimate dirt on others (bring certain links as evidence and people dismiss them, saying 'Oh, those are part of the bot campaign'), and makes any political discussion on Twitter a horrible idea. (Whether or not I think Twitter is already a horrible place for political discussion is another matter entirely.)

ConsiderCrying··on It costs $10k to ‘own’ a Chick-fil-A franchise
My biggest takeaway from this is that Wendy's standards are surprisingly high. Why do they require a net worth of $5 million when most seem to top out at $1 million? Is it a way of ensuring a lower closure rate as people with $5 million net worth are less likely to go bankrupt and shut down the restaurant?
ConsiderCrying··on CollegeHumor shuts down
A more approachable solution (for the general public, at least) would be a payment processing service that takes the risk of working with adult content creators. But that seems like a tall ask, especially for a problem that's pretty niche. Porn makes a lot of money, but not for the people who're just handling the payments. Or, rather, it might make them a good amount but it's probably the same as the profit from other industries, except with added risk.

The problem with Patreon is that it's also getting quite bad for content creators (at least there were a lot of complaints about half a year ago) with the cut they take, the money transfers, and the fact that they've tried to ban adult content creators. It would have been fine if this was all stated/implemented right away but, much like many other platforms, they're doing this at a slow creep. There are alternatives but they're coming up against a well-known name and stifling competition, same problem as with Facebook, just on a smaller scale.
ConsiderCrying··on Glacier National Park to remove all 'glaciers will be gone by 2020' signs
I agree and I'd hope to see the information tweaked based on latest research, which is what they're doing. Hope other spots with similar plaques and signs follow suit. Just so skeptics have less to argue with, not just entering the park and going 'Ha, see, signs in this place are wrong so, clearly, climate science is wrong.' Yes, true, our estimates are changing on the regular but that's better than just pretending like the problem doesn't exist or hoping it's small.

Even if they change signs to read 'will melt in 2050', that's still terrifying. So I do hope they put up new data soon.

ConsiderCrying··on How Much Land Does a Man Need? (1886)
Yeah, I'm lucky to have no kids and a bookworm partner so I don't get roped into playing with toys or watching reality TV. The other option in such cases would probably be their commute to work, if they have one. Audiobooks can be a real savior there.
ConsiderCrying··on How Much Land Does a Man Need? (1886)
Do you not have much free time after work? Or do you just feel like there are better things to occupy it, other than reading?

I always read after a work and manage more than 2 books a month but, then again, I don't think I've seen a movie or played a video game in at least half a year, so I'm sacrificing on that front.

ConsiderCrying··on Show HN: Create and mail a free postcard
Anything like that for Telegram? Not necessarily by you, I mean in general. I know it supports bots so this should be possible.
ConsiderCrying··on Germany Calls for European Firewall Against U.S. Sanctions
Openly calling for cooperation with Russia and China, of all places, should be political suicide. But it seems like the message of 'let's protect ourselves from /insert boogeyman/' still works well enough to muddy public opinion.

The sanctions are there for a reason and saying that you need protection against them is like saying 'well, they did a bad thing and got a slap on the wrist, the obvious conclusion is to keep doing bad things but fend off the slaps'.

ConsiderCrying··on Working for a startup makes less sense
They can be right even if your two options are either a startup or a tech giant. They have their downsides as does every job, even freelance.

I like being freelance but getting the motivation in those first couple of weeks was pretty hard. I also found it tougher to sell my services because I never really had to do it before. Probably some other stuff I can't think of off the top of my head? I don't think any type of work is perfect although I'd go for freelance any day of the week.

ConsiderCrying··on People Who Do Not Exist Invade Facebook
If only the political bots were as obvious, though. When you spot one of those "make money easy", you know it's a bot right away, not even two words in. With a political troll, you can't tell unless you know what to look for or can spot a pattern in their behavior.
