ComplexSystems··on Responsible Release of AI-Generated Mathematics
It seems that, despite spending decades obsessing over their various niche problems, they have little interest in a magic button that can immediately produce the answer. At best they view this button as a mild nuisance they need to contain somehow.
ComplexSystems··on Windows 11½
Someday I'd like to see someone do a similar parody of Linux where your job is to get a printer working in Kubuntu. Preferably on a laptop with a HiDPI monitor.
ComplexSystems··on Why do we need human mathematicians anymore?
Turns out what you call "intelligence" was never needed to do math.
ComplexSystems··on A Beginning for Mathematics
> But for math: what is the point of a proof if no one will read it and no one uses its result?

What is the point of writing software if nobody will run it?

> So mathematicians should feel free to use AI as much as you want, but in the end, they should've gained some understanding on what happened.

So they ask the AI to explain the proof.

ComplexSystems··on A beginning for mathematics
I admit I just don't understand this attitude.

People had the same complaints that the code produced by early coding models was messy, lazy, poorly commented, had terrible architecture and so forth. The central complaint was that it was just too difficult for humans to review. The answer is just to improve the models and move on.

Similarly now we're getting AI doing math. The proofs compile but are a mess. So just make the models better at writing clean proofs and explaining what they're doing to humans. That's the end of it.

Rather than just go on and on about how it's the end of the world if we don't do this, why don't we just do it?

ComplexSystems··on Navier-Stokes Announcement
I agree. I found it refreshing to get away from all of the AI drama and just enjoy the advancement in math.
ComplexSystems··on Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf]
If it's unethical, then there is reason to call it out as Tristan is doing. I see no reason to blame the victim.
ComplexSystems··on GPT-6 Astra on OpenRouter
It's absolutely related.
ComplexSystems··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
Ridiculous. Air gap the agents, end this nonsense, and stop hacking unsuspecting websites to hype your product.
ComplexSystems··on GLM-5.3-Flash
It would be great if open source US AI companies could get going already.
ComplexSystems··on OpenAI: GPT 5.6 Sol price reduction (until at least Nov 21)
Their current strategy is "make the product affordable in tiny little bursts here and there." That is not a great way to build a moat.
ComplexSystems··on Anthropic's best AI model struggles to attract users as cheaper tools thrive
The government seems like it's in a rough spot. If they let Mythos out, they seem worried people could use it to mass-hack the internet. China seems to not care so much about this and they're right behind. I don't really know what the answer is.
ComplexSystems··on Aaron Swartz was prosecuted for scraping, while Meta does it without consequence
So what crime was he guilty of that Meta isn't? "Scraping too unsophisticatedly?"
ComplexSystems··on Qwen3.8 27B scores 52 on Artificial Analysis
China cleaned house these past few months. Kudos to them.

I would really like to see some open source US companies out there.

ComplexSystems··on AI isn’t outthinking mathematicians, it’s out-remembering them
It's also "out-brute forcing them." It just never gets tired. If a mathematician picks a research direction and spends a whole week on it and it doesn't pan out, they will likely be annoyed, need a break for a while, etc. This thing just does not ever get tired or discouraged or care; it's just onto the next thing until something ends up working.
ComplexSystems··on A controversial Alzheimer's surgery is said to reverse symptoms
It seems like you're arguing with this guy for the sake of argument. If anesthetics "yielded some improvement" in Alzheimer's temporarily then any surgery would get the same effect and we would already know about it. And what is the second point you are trying to make here - that zero surgeries are ever performed annually on Alzheimer's patients for any reason? And of the ones that are, the family wouldn't notice the dramatic cognitive improvement shown in this article, but they noticed it here?
ComplexSystems··on DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731
It is true. I don't care about having infinite frontier-level intelligence, and I don't care if Fable can one-shot frobnicate a klaxelzorp with a benchmark performance of 97%. I doubt most people do, in fact. I just want something that meets the baseline level of intelligence needed to be a really, really good pair programming agent. It shouldn't have any silly dealbreaker issues involving laziness or hallucinations, it should be smart enough to bounce ideas off of, and it should automate doing tedious boilerplate. And - most of all - I want to be able to afford using it as much as I want. That's what has happened here.
ComplexSystems··on New Orleans is testing Carbyne’s AI-powered Emergency Call Triage software
I think the fear is that the people in charge may be too gung-ho about AI and go do something like this, rather than saying that LLMs will spontaneously develop some kind of data analytics power.
ComplexSystems··on Discovering Cryptographic Weaknesses with Claude
Fortunately, Claude won't fit in a van!
ComplexSystems··on The Kimi K3 Moment
Surprising they didn't clean that from the data before training. It's easy to identify, a simple search->replace gets most of it, and a cheap LLM can identify the edge cases (e.g. avoiding "Claude Shannon" -> "Kimi Shannon" or something).
ComplexSystems··on GPT-5.6 Sol Ultra produces proof of the Cycle Double Cover Conjecture [pdf]
How many tokens would it cost to write some library functions to fill in the gaps?
ComplexSystems··on Cloudflare Drop
Who, exactly, should help people host a website?
ComplexSystems··on Claude Sonnet 5
So the post-introductory price is set such that Sonnet 5 will cost 100%-135% as much?
ComplexSystems··on GLM 5.2 beats Claude in our benchmarks
Sonnet 4.6 is ahead of Opus 4.7? Hm.
ComplexSystems··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
The guy is genuinely worried for his future. I see nothing shameful or narcissistic about that, and I don't think it makes sense for you to wish him any harm.
ComplexSystems··on Meta’s chaotic AI strategy
Yes, they certainly should have taken one of the many other jobs that are widely available right now.
ComplexSystems··on What it feels like to work with Mythos
Who can afford to use this damn thing though? They're pricing everyone out of the market with stuff like this.
ComplexSystems··on Stack Overflow’s forum is dead but the company’s still kicking
Can you imagine ChatGPT terminating a conversation because it thought your question was "low effort?" The behavior wouldn't be viewed as helpful or aligned, and nobody would use it.

StackOverflow was, all too often, not helpful or aligned. It died because the staff were unable to get the moderators to be helpful.

ComplexSystems··on Language Models Need Sleep
That's because the purpose of this article is not to have an objective debate over their abilities at all. Most interesting research in this field isn't. Instead, it's to present a new technique to improve LLM performance, which is much more interesting than (once again) rehashing the philosophy of LLM personhood.
ComplexSystems··on An OpenAI model has disproved a central conjecture in discrete geometry
That may be true for now, but it seems clear enough that letting the model use Lean in its internal reasoning process would be a great idea
