Coincoin··on Interstellar communication. IX. Message decontamination is impossible
>Couldn't we simply agree not to execute un-audited code from unknown third parties?

How exactly would we achieve that? How can we prevent every single human being on the planet from executing some malicious code coming from open space?

Wow. I know I'm late but... WOOSH?
Coincoin··on Spotify Form F-1
Discover Weekly looks at the music you listened to recently. If you listen to 5 random songs this week because you were very busy, it's going to offer you the same thing next Monday. Then if the only things you listen to next week is the bad offering from Discover, it's going to propose you the same crap the week after.

>the contorted thought processes people go through to justify one hour stops for full recharges

But everybody knows you need to stop a full hour to pee for every two hours of driving else you might die. Think about all the delicious restaurant meals and fun you haven't had because you never needed to wait for your ICE car to recharge in the middle of nowhere.

You get that with any ideology really. If you can reduce all the scope of all the problems in the world into a single variable, you can now blame everything on that single variable. Everything seems so easy and simple while in fact you are just being lazy.
Coincoin··on Zero-Width Characters: Invisibly fingerprinting text
I sometimes use invisible white spaces to sort entries in lists I don't have control over the comparator.
Coincoin··on Australian uses snack bags as Faraday cage to block tracking by employer
Apparently the manager didn't really care about the device in the bag. They knew about it and let it go.

However, they did care that he was not working when he said he did. They probably simply used the subterfuge as damning evidence.

Most employers I worked for would let me infringe some of their policies, as long as I was an otherwise good employee worth my salary.

Some other places were just totalitarian about their rules and I left because of it. They were probably happy they got rid of a bad apple without having to fire me. It's give and take really.

Coincoin··on Would you send your kids to school on a self driving schoolbus?
> Yet here we see many people talk about how leaving children unsupervised in a self driven bus is a recipe for disaster. Which seems to suggest that children socializing with their own age is a detriment to both society and the children themselves.

Kids can socialize even if they are supervised.

Coincoin··on FCC plan would give Internet providers power to choose the sites customers see
...going to that political rally? I'm afraid you can't pass sir.
Coincoin··on FCC plan would give Internet providers power to choose the sites customers see
While everybody is busy yelling and flailing about how Trump has small hands and is literally Hitler, those policies, that will have an actual day to day impact on everybody, go through unchallenged.
Coincoin··on Why does man print “gimme gimme gimme” at 00:30?
I personally like to stumble on extraordinarily stupid bugs. Bonus points, if the author works with us (or is myself), we get to laugh at his expense forever after.

Coincoin··on Apology after Japanese train departs 20 seconds early
As a rule, I always arrive exactly 15 minutes late to people's houses, I'll even wait in the car. Chances are they are late preparing everything, taking a last minute shower or vacuuming.
Coincoin··on Plastic-eating caterpillars: An escape from a shopping bag triggers an idea
>Article title: Plastic-eating caterpillars could save the planet

Wait, since when is plastic the main menace to our planet?

>Another question is the composition of their faeces.

Yeah, it would suck if it produced even more CO2 and methane. Even if we can catch the methane to make energy, that's more CO2 that would have been otherwise sequestered.

Coincoin··on A Test of Police Body Cameras Defies Expectations
> What do these two things have to do with each other?

They are both emergency responses and require tremendous amount of material and human resources to get there very fast.

Police have the fastest cars with the brightest lights that let them go wherever they want the fastest (Bonus if they have a motorcycle, but those they keep to give speeding tickets for some reason). It also means they are the first ones there and might need to do CPR from time to time or help that guy about to jump down the bridge.

>Why has our society conflated those?

We are imperfect humans in an imperfect world. We can't assign every single task to a different human being. We, as a society, accept that.

>The fact that we're talking seriously about affording public policing a sphere of secrecy is just a symptom of that problem.

There is a big difference between secrecy of the police and privacy of the policed.

Go watch Live PD and come tell me seriously they should stop censoring the names, date of birth, addresses, plate numbers, SSN, wardrobe malfunctions of the victims, witnesses and children that appear in the show.

They take the time to protect the privacy of the bystanders, but it costs money and an incredible amount of resource to do so just for a couple of teams for a couple of hours a week and they don't even do a perfect job.

Coincoin··on Tulipmania: More Boring Than You Thought
Maybe it's akin to nigerian scams. They don't want to waste their bandwidth on someone who's not going to click on their numerous articles with similar title and generate more ad revenue.

However if you are gullible enough to click on "7 awesome things Miley Cirus did, number 4 will shock you!", you are ripe to click on all the click bait they will show you.

The problem arises when good quality content uses clickbait. It's the same as naming your bank "The Nigerian Prince Bank of America".

I'm always surprised that en_CA and fr_CA are so different. We use spaces as separator and comma for the decimal. Also we use the 24h format while the ROC uses 12h. We do use 12h colloquially though. Dates are officially y-M-d but most people use d/M/y.

It's funny how in Canada we have some specific remnants of the imperial system. Most people under 50 have no idea what a Fahrenheit is (myself included), except for pool water and oven temperature. Go figure.

Coincoin··on ESPN Football Analyst Walks Away, Disturbed by Brain Trauma on Field
It's more than that, in the NHL at least.

Why are scuffles around the net tolerated? They are disgraceful. Almost every game you will see someone get punched or cross checked in the face with no consequence, as long as it's after the whistle or the victim is an asshole. Which leads to my next point.

Why is general assholery tolerated and even celebrated? There is a thing called sportsmanship and there is none of it in the NHL until they put someone on a stretcher. They bang their stick on the boards for 5 seconds then it's open season for the other guy.

Why are fights only 5 minutes penalty? Any other sport they would get suspended for even half attempting to punch someone. The NHL and PA say it's some sort of anarchy-on-ice bullshit but we all know it's because it sells tickets and have otherwise poor players make the cut.

Coincoin··on Introducing .NET IL Linker
For the heavy lifting such as scene transformations and animations we delegate in batches to a SIMD optimized native lib.

For the rest, we use System.Math. They are not used enough to be a significant bottleneck.
