CodeSgt··on Experts once predicted that Americans would face excess leisure time (2015)
Has it occurred to you that the lack of people willing to pay for what you're trying to offer may be indicative that it's not quite as valuable as you perceive it to be?

I don't think it's work specifically that's tied to morality, but production. If someone is obviously consuming more than they're producing, then they're going to get negative attention. In 2022 it's not always clear exactly how much someone is producing, so it's generally assumed that someone with a full time job produces enough to cover their needs while the unemployed surviving off of welfare do not.

We even make allowances for people trying to reach net positive production. Students, for example, aren't typically looked down upon. It's only people who are actually lazy and not doing anything useful with their lives that are looked down upon, and rightfully so.

CodeSgt··on Experts once predicted that Americans would face excess leisure time (2015)
They are definitely crummy. Communism isn't a new idea. It's a very old, very bad idea that's repeatedly failed.
CodeSgt··on Experts once predicted that Americans would face excess leisure time (2015)
We work more in large part because we consume much more. Increased consumption requires increased supply which requires increased production which means more work to be done.
CodeSgt··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
Looks like we're at an impasse as we just fundamentally disagree. Indiscriminate should be federally legal and fortunately is in many states. I believe he every bit has the moral right to fire indiscriminately and burn his company to the ground if he wants while he retains majority ownership.
CodeSgt··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
I agree once over 50% ownership has transferred you lose the moral right to destroy it. I should have clarified and said the one creates and owns, or even just owns really.

I disagree with the other assertion that you lose the moral right to destroy it. Does he have the moral right to fire his employees? I hope you'd agree with me that he does. And in this case he'd just be firing all of them.

CodeSgt··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
How does one create a thing and then lose the moral right to destroy said thing? That's not something I think you'll be able to justify to me. Just because it's destruction may hinder other people doesn't mean that it isn't the creators right to do so.
CodeSgt··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
Okay but at the highest level, who directs that work? Who decides what needs doing and how to allocate that human capital? Who's mind is directly responsible for the creation and orchestration of SpaceX?

Labor means nothing if not done for an intelligent purpose. For S0aceX employees, Elon Musk is the source of that intelligent purpose. Of course labor beyond what one man can supply will be necessary for any worthwhile pursuit. What matters is not the labor, but the source of the intelligent purpose that gives the labor a common goal and guides it towards it.

CodeSgt··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
Yes if somehow Musk couldn't find anyone to accept his money I guess most of those people would go back to making widgets and SpaceX would cease to be.

That's not the reality of the situation though. SpaceX's current staff isn't the last cohort of people who are willing to work for musk, and therefore are hugely responsible for the company and it's output. They're but cogs amongst the machine that Musk has built. Cogs are replaceable. Cogs don't function properly if not properly utilized by the engineer.

Musk is the engineer. He's the only person at SpaceX, or Tesla, who is actually irreplaceable. I know people rant and rave about "people aren't replaceable cogs" but they truly are, and that's good. If this wasn't the case for 99.9% of the world, society wouldn't function that well. I'm a cog, and I know that. It isn't shameful and shouldn't be viewed as such.

CodeSgt··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
This take is so common and so bizarre. SpaceX employees are there because Musk pays them to be there. If they weren't there, Musk would pay someone else. The employees aren't irreplaceable or in a position of power over Musk and trying to spin it like they are is absurd.
CodeSgt··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
It's absolutely right for a man who built a company to be able to fire whoever he wishes, especially for cause like in this case.
CodeSgt··on The silent majority of experts (2012)
I largely agree. I had a very bad upbringing, as did most of my childhood and teenage friends. I've just in the past year or two managed to "break the cycle", but it wasn't (isn't) easy.

Now that most people in my life are themselves successful professionals, getting glimpses into their family life and childhood is surreal. It's a completely different culture, typically a much, much, much healthier one. It's shocking how many people don't consciously acknowledge this fundamental chasm between people.

CodeSgt··on Ask HN: Side projects that are making money, but you'd not talk about them?
Feel free not to reply to this, but why the hesitancy to provide specifics?
CodeSgt··on Ask HN: Side projects that are making money, but you'd not talk about them?
I've considered purchasing an application boilerplate like nodewood, but can never bring myself to drop a couple hundred dollars on code of unknown quality using methods or conventions I may or may not like.

Do you offer any way to view the source before purchase?

CodeSgt··on Ask HN: Side projects that are making money, but you'd not talk about them?
Thanks! I didn't realize it wouldn't auto format as a link when I posted it, sorry about that.

Look at the original post I linked.

CodeSgt··on Kraken Offers Employees 4 Months Severance If They Leave Before June 20th
Sounds like individuals who have beliefs and are standing by them.

A company choosing not to submit to popular politics shouldn't immediately prompt doubt of organizational health or professionalism.

They've clearly articulated their actual core values, and are offering very generous severance to employees who disagree. This is a sign of vibrant health if I've ever seen one.

The return is having a home to live in. You're still not explaining why this is bad.

> There is a strong aversion to breaking working code

Am I the only person who doesn't view this as a good thing? If you want to compile code your wrote 20 years ago, use a compiler version from 20 years ago. Forcing backwards compatability hinders a languages growth and forces it to stick by decisions that, in hindsight, may not have been the best.

CodeSgt··on Economic hurricane on the way- we are caught in a “Inflation spiral”
> If you need to borrow $750K AUD (the median mortgage in Australia) to purchase a property, then something is terribly wrong with the market and you probably shouldn't be doing that.

Why? Why does borrowing money for a home indicate something is terribly wrong? Homes are inherently extremely valuable assets that take a lot of time, effort, and capital to construct. Home prices may be inflated now, but their cost being so high that you must borrow to afford one is nothing new and not at all unhealthy.

CodeSgt··on Ask HN: How to advocate for prospective employers to show us their codebases?
I have a hard time imagining that if their code base is awful, they'll present you with awful fake code that accurately represents that.
CodeSgt··on It matters how you raise your kids
As an adult, yes. As a child, no. Personality takes time to form, infants aren't born with strong opinions or takes on any particular subjects.

This is something that, to my great shame, I've always struggled with. Any recommendations for improving in this area?

CodeSgt··on 'Old white guy' can move forward with workplace bias suit against AT&T
The difference is that we can conclusively show that children are intellectually under developed.

Old people are often just as intelligent as their younger colleagues, and often wiser as well. Of course there are exceptions, but there are poor performers at every age bracket for a variety of reasons.

CodeSgt··on 'Old white guy' can move forward with workplace bias suit against AT&T
When I initially read that I honestly didn't think it was all that bad. Inappropriate? Yes. Lawsuit worthy? No.

But then, I imagined if the same thing were said to a 58 year old black woman, and immediately realized that it's severity.

Is it just me, or has racism towards white people become acceptable/main stream (at least, much more so than racism towards other races)? I feel as if my lack of a visceral reaction to this is due in part to a form of desensitization that's taken place during my time on social media.

I rarely see this racism expressed as actual hatred, but I very frequently see disparaging jokes targeted towards white people, especially old white people.
