Clent··on Recreating Delicious Library in 2025?
I created a similar product to Delicious Library years before its launch and peer to peer version of it was the direction I had been planning to take it. This was all long before mobile devices, long before Apple SDK's had any support for syncing such data, etc but the idea was there and wasn't just mine, I had users requesting this as well.

But alas the revenue dried up with Delicious Library hitting the scene. It received crazy levels of press about how beautiful it was. I recall feeling at the time like they were paying the press to cover their product but knowing what I know now, I'm quite certain that was the case. The reviews never mentioned any competitors. There were several all at a cheaper prices with more tons more features.

Clent··on Hacking Subaru: Tracking and controlling cars via the admin panel
I think you misunderstand what's being described. The server didn't check it, it accepted the modified hidden field. The server should have rejected the request.
Clent··on Apple denies App Store profit margin is 75% – claims to have no clue
How could they calculate this if they weren't tracking it?

The cost would need to included not just development hours that have gone into creating and maintaining the system, but hours of other employee's used for the project. Also the servers, the network, buildings, etc.

If there were forced to calculate this number, it wouldn't surprise me if they were able to do so in a manner that shows they lose money. At best they could be forced to track the cost going forward using a third party auditor.

Clent··on Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals
Those numbers cannot be percentages, they add up to 133.

Claims to take full responsibility but since he has not resigned he has not taken any responsibility he has just said the words.
Clent··on Can A.I. be blamed for a teen's suicide?
I think it would be wise to require these AI bots to comply with Duty to Report and Mandatory Reporter laws.
Clent··on ByteDance sacks intern for sabotaging AI project
I think you are assuming there are a unique 10,000 people for each gifted individual. I think it safe to say there is overlap and that those 10,000 people are each going after several gifted people.

You also appear to be assuming there are no mid range people who everyone ignores, that is going to be the majority of the population.

Clent··on We're excited about our new roundabout
I live in an area with many A, B, C as you call them. Assuming we're going backwards, where A is right most lane, with these three lane roundabouts it's always A can only turn right, C an only turn left, B is for going straight, but can also turn right or left.

There are variations on this, sometimes, B can only go straight so that C can also go straight. C can also be used for a fully controlled U-turn. In fact, C is has the markings such that one can just go around and around and around forever in if one chose to do so.

All of the roundabouts here have overhead signage leading up to them that indicates which lanes are for each direction of travel. There are also lines on the roads themselves have solid and dashed lines. Never cross solid lines, optionally cross dashes. We get snow so lines aren't always visible.

I've been through many different roundabouts countless times and there is occasionally someone that doesn't get it right but the traffic is moving slowly enough that it unusually only leads to honking.

One strategy is to watch the faces of other drivers, people will be looking in the direction they will be turning.

Clent··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
Look at how well you're being treated now without a union. Look at how well union workers are treated versus their no union worker equivalents. Imagine how much better you'd be treated if there was a union versus your current no union status.
Clent··on A road safety plan that will lead to cars communicating with each other
Pedestrians don't need a transceiver installed, they have a smartphone and that should be enough.
Clent··on Trench collapses have killed hundreds of workers in the US over the last decade
Simple uses of technology can be used to avoid a lot of work place troubles.

No video sent, no one gets paid. This would ensure everyone on the job site complies with safety rules. Each worker would be incentivized to send their own video proof reducing claims of technology failure.

Clent··on Monopolies across the grocery supply chain squeeze consumers, small businesses
This doesn't mean our food is cheaper. It could mean that we have other budget items that are larger than in other countries, such as healthcare costs. We almost spent more on childcare costs than countries further to the right in that graph.
Clent··on Campaigners 'thrilled' as St Albans aims to be smartphone-free for under-14s
The old phones won't work because they cannot connect to modern networks. The hardware of the phone itself is the issue.

However, there are still phones that are just for texting and calling, previously these were referred to as feature phones or basic phones. For example, the Orbic Journey or TCL Flip. As far as I know these all run Android now but lack the ability to install apps and have small screens.

Clent··on How to get 7th graders to smoke
This is a different form a manipulation.

No one is trying to change these people's behaviors. They are feeding them what they already want; reinforcing negative behaviors. That has always been very easy.

The relationship to today's political theatre is related to this discussion by comparing it to how easy it was to get everyone to smoke in the 1950's

Clent··on the US is propping up gas while the world moves to renewable energy
This is not what the article is about. There is nothing in the article about exporting.

The percentage of America's electricity generated by non-renewables is lagging behind others. The crux of the article is that American has replaced coal with natural gas.

Clent··on Google wants employees to move faster
Data dumping a 57 page pdf about Global brands is the best way to communicate something specifically about Google.

But based on the graph I assume you're talking about page 12 which has a graph of various Google products. The data only goes back to 2018 and ends in Apr 2023. There is a clear downward trend since then Google Maps is the least affected but is still down from the low.

The trend I've seen is people on here have voice a significant lost trust over the past year. A loss of trust that is only growing. I feel its safe to assume we loss trust first since this is our industry.

If we're losing trust and the general public has already losing trust, I expect that general public's trust to catch up soon and show a steeper decline.

Anecdotally, I've already seen dissatisfaction with Google coming up more and more frequently in the areas of the internet I visit where the topics are far less technical. Unlike here those people are less aware of the alternatives.

I expect that when people realize Google is the new Boeing, they will abandon it quickly. There are many alternatives.

Clent··on Amazon grows to over 750k robots, replacing 100k humans
How many times can one's order be 'stolen' like this before a pattern emerges and the account is banned? This is also fraud and because it requires using the internet, it's going to lead to felony charges.
Clent··on Gecko Robotics built a $600M company from a college project
Not sure any of this can be trusted. It reads like a fluff piece, advertising disguised as information. It tries hard to make it sound like a rage-to-riches story but he vacationed in Costa Rica during college, participated in a cross country bike fundraiser, demands only the best.

This is played against, being homeschool but still having access to robotics equipment as a young age.

Using a public shower in his Costa Rica visit but most likely returning to his high end hotel room shortly thereafter.

Sharing a three bedroom house with a dozen people. He was married and the owner the company, I doubt he was sharing a room since it doesn't indicate otherwise. What was the experience for the engineers.

There is no indication that he has experienced a single day of actual struggle, the article is all a calculated points in his life to make him sound relatable. There are mentions of others in the article that couldn't join the start up or had to leave because of lack of funding. This wasn't an issue for him, why?

I assume he trust fund kid or has wealthy parents that supported his venture.

His demands for only the top talent because he cannot handle working with anything less is a huge indicator of an over inflated ego.

Clent··on Scientists say they have found evidence of an unknown planet in our solar system
The article doesn't even state it this strongly. The claim is that planet 9 is the best explanation. Another explanation offered is that there was a previous planet that affected the existing planet's orbits and it is no longer there.

The article also notes that this claim is being made by the same scientist that popularized the idea of a planet 9.

There is plenty of room for doubting this specific planet 9 claim without changing any laws of physics.

Clent··on Should Apple Kill Siri and Start Over?
This works for me.

Apple has a press release, https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2023/12/siri-can-now-help-use...

I didn't have to allow Siri to access health data, which it only prompted when I asked with the health app open.

Clent··on Quantum mechanics is the operating system other physical theories run on (2007)
Taking a gravity and then performing an impossible physical modification so you can make conjectures on the model is nonsense.

You can't take an model, apply an impossible scenario and then claim the model is invalid because it can't account for this scenario that you admit is impossible.

Clent··on Student debt is haunting Americans from graduation to retirement
How old? Did you attend college before the weight of it's cost was left to the student to bare?

Anyone who attended college a couple decades ago benefited heavily from a subsidized system and now refused to pay it backward. There is a reason these people have been classified as a selfish generation and this is merely one aspect of it.

What mental gymnastics allowed people to reap the rewards of cheap education and casually condemn anyone who follows that same path to economic ruin.

Keep in mind this is uniquely an American problem with uniquely American excuses.

Clent··on Justice Department to file antitrust suit against Live Nation
When did seeing a live event become a luxury?

Live events have been the norm throughout history.

The fact that it can now be classified as a luxury speaks to the need for drastic change.

Clent··on What Boeing did to all the guys who remember how to build a plane
People need their mortality taken for future deterrence. Anything less is our collective moral weakness saying this is OK.
Clent··on Amazon and iRobot call off their planned acquisition
Interesting that you're being down voted for answering the question while all the ditto comments are not.

I have had the same experience with an i3+, which is just a vacuum but with a self-empty base. This i3+ originally didn't have room mapping but they added it after I purchased it. It goes home to charge and empty itself and cleans in a reasonable pattern.

I've previously owned the 350 series and some other similar one and they were more toy than utility.

Clent··on Corporations are not to be loved
Have you ever been in abusive relationship?

A corporation is incapable of causing the harm that can come from a close relationship with a person.

To be so caviler about this subject simply to justify your agenda is disgusting.

Clent··on Quebec man who blamed wildfires on government pleads guilty to setting 14 fires

Clent··on Is Google Getting Worse? A Longitudinal Investigation of SEO Spam in Search [pdf]
I've done the same for a handful of things I use to default to a search engine for.

My favorite is recipes.

The blog spam around recipes is notoriously bad and is a direct result of Google Search.

Using these LLMs, all I need to do is tell it what I'm looking for in general and it will give me an entire recipe with no extraneous information.

It can handle adding or removing ingredients, substitutions. It can adjust servings. It can flip the recipe to work in a slow cooker or pressure cooker.

I've even had some limited success where I list restrictions based on picky eaters in the house for creating longer meal plans. No search engine can compete with that.

There were apps designed around these use cases. I foresee these sort of nuanced and personalized interactions being a key to drawing people away from search engines.

Clent··on Cancer Is Striking More Young People, and Doctors Are Alarmed and Baffled
There is a graph that's rate of change, as opposed to rate of occurrence.

Rate of change was already climbing through the 80's along with the other age groups, then dipped in the early 90's for about 10 years and then started climbing again for the age range 15-39 while the older age ranges decreased.

That would lead me to believe any environmental cause has been around for a while and it's likely that all the focus has been on screening 40+ and not enough screening for those under 40.
