ClaraForm··on Greenwich: an experiment in collaborative links
I completely agree. Yesterday I stumbled on a backup I had made of an old Internet forum (2002) I was on. Just the amount of trolling and shooting the shit in every comment was awesome. The internet was the place to get away from the seriousness of life. Now it’s as bland as all the rest of it. I realize I’m doing the same in this comment , pontificating on the merits of humor. But I’m not like the rest, I swear! I remember when it was fun!
ClaraForm··on How I Built My Blog
Crashed on scrolling for me on latest Librewolf stable/Fedora 40. I usually love Josh's work, but this isn't it.
ClaraForm··on Show HN: Microtonal Piano
I'm going to bug report something very strange: once I started trying to make music with your instrument, _both_ of my dogs reacted with serious concern for me. I don't know what they heard in your samples, but something that made them worry. You should test with more dogs. ;)
ClaraForm··on Beeper acquired by Automattic
I guess I didn’t think about it like that. If everyone opens up, Beeper’s competition is suddenly WhatsApp, instead of being one of their assets.
ClaraForm··on Beeper acquired by Automattic
I'm confused, because it legally sounds like the opposite right? All these platforms are legally going to be requested to open up sooner or later because of recent EU rulings. Perhaps Beeper just ran out of runway? They thought they'd be making money in December with their iMessage move, and now it's April?
ClaraForm··on Letting go of the idea of keeping up
> Okay, I'm literally terrified about not being in the top 1% or top 10% of everything I do. Scared.

I don't believe you. No one is in the "top 1%" of everything you do.

I don't say this to shame you, but to make you realize that you're already okay as you are, while not being the best.

There's no way you're in the top 1% of management ability, technical knowledge, coworker relationships, parenting, exercise, finances, et cetera.

On the few axes of life where I know for sure I am better than the next 99 people I meet, I have had to practice that thing so much that I have made more than one logical jump and ability jump that counts as a filter for the next 99. It won't be overnight that I fall out of the 1%.

I suspect the same is true for anyone in any 1% of anything.

Let go of your fears.

ClaraForm··on Write a Letter to Your Future Self
16 year old me got more right about the world than I ever predicted he could. I encourage you to read it. Especially to see how much about your younger self your current self gets wrong! The opposite effect of depressing.

At the end of all of my reading even though my younger selves couldn't hear it I whispered to all of them: "You turned out okay little one. Rest."

ClaraForm··on Write a Letter to Your Future Self
No promises but maybe. At 16 my family was breaking down so it's all a bit too personal. I'll see if some are worth sharing publicly. If I do I'll respond back here again to let you know.
ClaraForm··on Write a Letter to Your Future Self
Starting at 16 years old I wrote a letter every birthday to my 30 year old self with ideas of who I want to become and how I ought to judge my success. I hoped when I turn 30 to open all of them up and realize how much I accomplished would be satisfying.

Through the project, I actually discovered two things. First, I estimated a rate of progress that exceeds the real possible magnitude of accomplishment by about two lifetimes. Second, that the storylines I want in my life and the opinions I have about them are stable across time, even if they are dormant for many years in a row. Whether this is the effect of personality or an ability to maintain memory beyond the capacity of attention I don’t know. But then again, maybe those are both the same thing.

ClaraForm··on Simulating a minimal cell in the browser
In biology, there’s a whole field of research dedicated to minimizing cells and their complexity. If you message “John Glass” he might be interested in having you model his work!

Edit: oops you’ve already modeled John’s work! That’s awesome. :D I’ve attended a few talks by John and I think he’d still be interested in seeing whether the modeling side of things can explain why he can’t get the minimal cell smaller.

ClaraForm··on Our language, our world
As a neuroscientist: lots of my study is improved by the understanding of physics. Electrophysiology is a classical example of folks studying the physics-only aspect of neurobiology. But, more crucially than that, our brain cells are ion-specific. Some times they let in only sodium, some times only potassium, and some times only calcium. Understanding how biology maintains specificity at the single atom level, while letting in millions of those atoms in at the same time is a purely physical riddle. We have some answers to it, if I've sparked your curiosity. ;)
ClaraForm··on Clicks – Physical keyboard for iPhone
Seconded, I could text from within my pocket if needed.
ClaraForm··on Statement from Germany's vice chancellor on the Hamas attack and antisemitism
I have the same thought as you in relation to what I just heard. 60% of the message had to be delivered to reinforce Germany's responsibilities, and the last 40% was great “both sidism” that I would want to hear.

My only reservation is that the line of where “criticism of Israel” jumps into “antisemetic rhetoric” seems to be defined by the listener rather than the speaker. How can one express a pro-Zionist, anti-Zionist action, pro-Palestinian autonomy, anti-Hamas action opinion without being called a hypocrite by someone somewhere? It’s not an insane position to hold, but listeners always want to define the speaker as supporting some kind of heinous past.

ClaraForm··on Review: Framework Laptop finally gets an AMD Ryzen config–and it’s pretty good
My ports are fine, something funky is up with yours. All 1st Gen hinges are bad, but the 2nd Gen hinge is almost perfect. All speakers are bad, battery life is bad, the fan is just a jet engine some times. The promise of an upgradable laptop is great, but it's less great if it's an excuse to ship sub-par default parts. If I have to replace most parts to end up with a laptop that makes me happy, it feels ... like I was cheated of the actual initial promise.

That said, I am happy with it. And still, I'm in for the experiment. If I can get one truly great inter-generational mainboard update while retaining most parts, then the "build" will have paid for itself. I'm on a 12th gen mainboard, hoping my next update will be some time around 2026 or 2027.

ClaraForm··on How would you say “She said goodbye too many times before.” in Latin?
If we open it up to Arabic slang then we can almost compress to 1, right?

رَحلِتَك

Because we can use the form of the verb that both disparagingly implies "sends you away", in the imperative form to imply what's actually being requested (obedience of repetition). Of course, it's not perfect, but definitely easily doable with 2.

ClaraForm··on What’s the world’s oldest language?
As a Copt who speaks but doesn't understand very much of what I say, my father can speak it, as does anyone who has a liturgical inclination. I can always go learn more of it, and it will likely remain as alive as it currently is for the foreseeable future. It's impossible to be devout without speaking it, it's impossible to connect to our identity without seeking to be devout.

Just supporting what you're saying.
