Cilvic··on Show HN: Open source data discovery and observability platform
I really like how you describe things from "use cases". What's missing for me is a clear highlight of what is part of ODD.

For example: all the steps under 3. are not part of ODD, or are they?

Only step 1 is performed in ODD, yes?

Personally, I'm mostly interested in lineage and would love a usecase that explains real world lineage. Say we have redshift/postgres and a Tableau with a dataset. How is the lineage generated or manually maintained.

Anyways great effort.

Cilvic··on Show HN: Open source data discovery and observability platform
Thanks, in the youtube video you mention ODD v4 with "enterprise features". Do you plan to release paid enterprise features?
Cilvic··on Show HN: Open source data discovery and observability platform
Looks really useful. I'm confused about pricing.

There is:

- the "schedule a call" which sounds like there is some paid version of this

- "Free an open source"

Is this a volunteer project but you still offer to take a call?

Also when in navigation mode, pressing Enter should allow me to edit the current task again.

Some feedback:

* i find it irritating if i can not leave feedback directly on the site, at least I didn't find a way * the little icon for "start a task" looks like an expand/collapse arrow, not like a (usually filled) triangle for "play" * I'd love to have subtasks * After deleting the tutorial there is no way to get it back

Cilvic··on Show HN: TaskTXT, plain text task-timing notepad
Great video. I've been thinking about something similar in particular because of the distractions. What happens a lot for me is that in order to achieve one task ("analyze churn rate") i get into a bunch of other tasks "find a software to visualize the chart" > "try apache superset" > "update docker desktop" on Windows" which in term of effort are way out of proportion to what I was willing to spend on the first task.

I'm eager to try how this tools handles the stacking/sub-tasks.

Also the hardest bit is the change in behavior and really write down all the little things before actually doing them.

Eager to try.

Cilvic··on Holochain: End-to-end open source P2P app framework
I clicked because we are looking for a P2P data sync where we don't know which device will be online and some might never be.

And ideas?

The devices are Androids in remote areas without stable internet.

Cilvic··on Launch HN: Windmill (YC S22) – Turn scripts into internal apps and workflows
This looks amazing and I'd love to try it out for this one thing I have in mind.

I'm not familiar with the Deno part of Typescript. Would it somehow be possible to use a C# library as a dependency?

For example https://github.com/OfficeDev/Open-XML-SDK I need for a way to edit (not create) the openXML content of Microsoft Office files

Cilvic··on Equals Raises $6.6M from David Sacks at Craft Ventures to Replace Excel
Well it said replace "Excel", not replace the "spreadsheet" ;-)

I can definitely see the appeal after watching the video. Not sure whether that would be enough to pull me away from Excel/Google sheets especially since that is "free" if you are in microsoft land or google land.

Cilvic··on Ask HN: What's After Acquisition for a Founder?
I am not a technical founder, more a product guy in between sales and engineering, but I was in a similar spot 4 years ago and about to leave, so here is my experience.

* we (~10 people) were acquired by/merged into Templafy (~80 people at the time, now over 350)

* first 1-2 years I kept me busy with learning everything in the new company, integrating everything and everyone into their new teams and growing our Berlin office.

* after that came the time to decide whether to take up formal responsibility in one of the departments, manage people etc. long story short I didn't, I loved the IC role, helped with tech prototypes and scouting, M&A

* after that I found two other projects that I found interesting and was in a unique position to help out with: one were internal tools for migrating customers from our monolith to micro-services system, then spend a couple of month with the data/analyst team.

* In the end I think the size of Templafy doesn't match my personal "ideal" organization size where I can be effective as a generalist, that's why I'm leaving.

>I am not sure how to transition from being a coder founder executive to Director or VP level executive.

I don't know much about you, but from my experience the overlap between "typical" founders and "typical" VP level executive is pretty small. So without knowing more I'd say you'll probably leave & start something new sooner or later :-)

That being said I still think you can have a great couple of years and contribute&benefit a lot, I just wouldn't worry too much if this turns out less permanent than you want it to be.

I'd probably rather approach it as "let's see where it takes me" not as "this is the starting point of me being an executive instead of a founder"

Cilvic··on Building friend catchers
What interest me the most is whether old friends would actually pass today's low thresholds (which seem to get lower over time in my case)
Cilvic··on Ask HN: How to balance one's personal interest while wanting to be relevant?
The question is a bit to general to come up with non simplistic advice.

Sticking with what you love sounds like a better, healthier source of motivation.

Look for opportunities to combine what you want and what's relevant to others.

Cilvic··on The State of Global Learning Poverty: 2022 Update [pdf]
Yes!

I don't know about past investments. But I found one part of the report that shows the potential return:

Page 11:

>Without action, the current generation of students now risks losing $21 trillion in lifetime earnings in present value, or the equivalent of 16 percent of today’s global GDP. Relative to current incomes, this economic cost is disproportionately borne by low- and middle-income countries, in which this generation of students could lose $11 trillion of lifetime earnings.9 In addition to this intergenerational inequality shock, evidence is mounting that the shock has worsened inequality within the current generation of children, as those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and other disadvantaged groups have suffered larger learning losses.10 Putting this as annual earnings equivalent, in low- and middle- income countries, this implies that the average person of the school-age generation might see a reduction in annual income of $975.

I understand you made your point in good faith and I appreciate that you made me think about the difference between GP "lie" and "creating awareness".

Nevertheless, I believe that giving the awareness part a free pass, can be a slippery slope. I didn't want to think about plumbing or the Proposition 4 or plastic surgery. So unless I search for either of those two I feel it's an intrusion to force those thoughts on me.

Cilvic··on Ask HN: Recommend employers with positive social impact
Come join us at eidu.com we impact education for children in low income countries, by providing an android phone to teachers and kids. We don't drop it from the sky but work with governments and have passionate coaches on the ground.

It will be an epic journey from the 39k students we've covered in Kenya today to 600m who deserve it (3x every year).

Cilvic··on Show HN: Mitmproxy2swagger – Automagically reverse-engineer REST APIs
Ok. This sounds great for easy developing. But when I'm hosting this I'm not a mitmproxy. I want to act like a normal server/endpoint for API A.
Cilvic··on Show HN: Mitmproxy2swagger – Automagically reverse-engineer REST APIs
The question is maybe a bit off-topic a d vague. That's because I struggle to express it with the right terms:

I'm looking for a generic tool to build and then serve:

Accept Incoming request (API contract A) Send outgoing request (API contract B) potentially with parameters from the incoming request Receiving incoming response (API contract B) Do some translations/string manipulation Send outgoing response (API contract A)

Cilvic··on Ask HN: Software with biggest potential for positive impact in 5 years?
At www.eidu.com we are working on education but starting with pre-schooler and the absolute basics (Foundational Literacy and Numeracy, FLN). The UN SDF 4 "education for all" points out the 600m learners who are "education poor". So it will be a long while before we touch adult education, but one can dream.

Cilvic··on Keyboard lets people type so fast it’s banned from typing competitions
Everytime I see thread on typing speed it makes me want to re-surrect this: https://github.com/janmechtel/rockettype

I wanted to start small with measuring real-life typing speed. And then work on two epics:

1. more aggressive Auto-Correct: why can you swipe "messy" on your phone and everything just works, all typos corrected fine, but the same doesn't work on PC?

2. typing technique trainer, webcam record your fingers and learn to use the right fingers for the right keys

Is anybody interested?

I think this is pretty cool.

I've been thinking about this "tree" in context of presentations which are structure + content/facts + layout/visualization. Basically all presentation content is just a big tree/hierarchy of facts (text and numbers) and some applied layout.

Many of the problems are similar:

- you want to look at the problem on different levels "high level" story line, low level drilling into section 4.3.2, seamless zoom

- you'd want to have different representations of the same information. During problem solving the information you are collecting is constantly growing and it's a back and forth between adding data, shaping it differently (lists become tables etc.)

- easy entity/renaming, search and replace for facts + audit trails "where does the number come from" etc.

- CSS / re-styling (why does it matter if important words are blue or red, that should just be a CSS theme you switch out)

- there also exists "structs" which are structured entities like say "these are the 40 offices" the client has, and we want to represent them in various forms

- ...

I wonder if notion could be turned into a modern problem solving / result presentation maker. It's very flexible in surfacing the same content in different formats.

More related to software development and their demo: Is any additional information in the tree, that is not /can not be in the text rendering.

I get that the text rendering can be "loss-y" meaning that if it's badly rendered, information can be lost / the text has errors.

But if you have the information, and you render it into a certain text representation that is error free. Then the program should also be able to parse it back into a tree?

What are the situations were storing it in "tree form" are actually superior?

Isn't the "tree" just a more compressed, less error prone and stricter text?

How about seeing how big of an index of the web one can build for 25k?

I am inspired by this: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28550764

I was thinking about building a domain name index, this would give the project a nice deadline and budget :-)

Cilvic··on Show HN: A search engine that lets you refine your queries
It seemed to work Ok.

I found the number of tags far too many to be really useful. I'm searching for an answer/not more problems.

UI wise I was irritated, that clicking the tag only had a visible effect after I moved the mouse away. First time i clicked (toggled on), then clicked again (toggled off).

I was thinking about a search engine that would help me chose the right direction of there are multiple interpretations.

My test was searching for "quasar" and seeing if the vue js framework would be offered as tag (which it's not). But it's actually result number 3?

How are the tags related to the results?

I've also found it irritating that selecting the tags need to be "applied" without having an idea of what it will do, or how many results there are.

Maybe apply the selected tag immediately and keep the tags in the same UI location (don't reload them, like you currently do after applying).

I'm not sure what's the perfect search example is for this. Because narrowing down by keyword is easy. Here it's almost like it helps you discover keywords/tags that are yet unknown?

Cilvic··on Show HN: A search engine that lets you refine your queries
I'm contemplating offering "indexing as a service" could you share whether you at any point thought about buying a (partial) index? And if so, what are parameters you'd like to set: source pages, intervall etc. And lastly how to consume the index.
