Last time I checked Amazon's hardware line... didn't go too well. Amazon is a retail company, not a software company. Remember that.

AWS (the closest thing to software Amazon owns) will converge to 0 profitably as competitors copy the easily replicable service.

Chronic30··on Gmail blocked in China
Beijing routinely sends it's military to remote regions and kills thousands of people (usually Muslims) and it never hits the world news.

Beijing also prevents information (as well as people) flowing from one part of the country to another, both physically and digitally, to prevent outbreaks (typically against the government).

These are just two examples. Please tell me how Beijing is alleviating oppression.

Chronic30··on Gmail blocked in China
Why block one email provider? Because China isn't a fan of Google. Yes they will be cut off from the world. But if you want to communicate with the Chinese, you will simply use something other than Gmail.

If you are smart and capable, the US is THE best place to be. If you aren't (and enjoy government financial support) the US is not the best place.

This is why Musk, Thiel, et al. moved to the US.

Chronic30··on Why is everyone so busy?
People fail to correctly value (1) the cost of these time saving services and (2) their own time.

It's similar to how people will drive around to save 5 cents per gallon on gasoline. Usually, they will only end up saving a dollar. Or someone will make multiple trips to their car to unload all groceries (which can add significant time in apartment buildings) because they wanted to save 20 cents and not buy a paper/plastic bag during checkout. These little things add up in time.

Chronic30··on Google Self-Driving Car Project's first vehicle prototype
Many rich families own (at least) one car per family member. We are talking about luxurious add-ons which is why I bring this up.

Most people live in cities, so your anecdote does not help.
Chronic30··on What Earth Tells Us About Life, Intelligence and the Universe
No, because intelligent life exists outside of Earth. It is a matter of time until we find it. Just like it's a matter of time until religion is no more.
Chronic30··on Ask HN: Considering leaving my job at a startup? What should I consider?
This. Many people will think their iOS app will revolutionize some niche market. Chances are, no it won't.

And how is medical information any different from financial information? Financial information can be used to do exactly everything you said about leaked medical records, yet no one worries if their bank/identity has been compromised.
