ChrisNorstrom··on China’s Firms Strive to Gain a Foothold in U.S. Venture Capital
So: "_____ is no big deal because _____ did it too."

How far should we take this....

- The Atlantic slave trade is no big deal because the Arabs did it too.

- Slavery in general is no big deal because Africans, Egyptians, Middle East Muslims, did it too.

- The Colonization of Africa is ok because the middle east Muslims, did it too.

- Making homosexuality illegal is ok because 30+ African countries did it too.

- Communism is ok because Cuba, North Korea, Germany, China, Vietnam, Bulgaria, USSR, etc... did it too.

- Rape and abuse of women is no big deal because, gosh everyone did it too.

So...what now, it's hypocritical of us to try to stop something bad from happening because a long time ago we did the same? Well then hell, lets just go back to the stone age. Screw law and civility.

ChrisNorstrom··on China’s Firms Strive to Gain a Foothold in U.S. Venture Capital
In the words of Elon Musk "If we published patents, it would be farcical, because the Chinese would just use them as a recipe book". From high speed trains, to maglev, to wind turbines, to kickstarter designs, to brands, designs, even entire styles of european and american cities like Paris, Venice, & London, the Chinese are notorious for stealing and reselling knockoffs of technologies. They simply rebrand it as "Chinese innovation".

Every group of people have a desire for power and world domination, they all just use different methods. And for the Chinese, intellectual colonization seems to be working.

ChrisNorstrom··on Does prospect theory explain Trump and Brexit votes?
Charts don't measure what they don't ask. Graphs and numbers don't measure emotions. The "data" on why Trump / Brexit won is hilarious. Correlation does not equal causation. By the way I just got downvoted again, and someone went through my username linked threads and downvoted them too. Welcome to the new HN, it wasn't like this 5 years ago. You can't talk anymore. You have to use code-words.
ChrisNorstrom··on Does prospect theory explain Trump and Brexit votes?
The worst part about all this, is that the same party that claims to be about Tolerance is so intolerant that you can't even explain to them why this (Trump & Brexit) happened.

No I'm not saying a word and I advise the HN members who "know what I'm talking about" to STAY quiet as well. I know it's tempting but I've tried it before on HN. I tried explaining, I'd type up these long posts with links to video evidence, scientific papers, psychology today articles and still the you-know-what-leaning downvote brigade got me. I don't mind downvotes but when you see how these people attack and censor and get you fired from work it's just not worth it. I deleted all my comments before the deletion time limit hit and vowed to just stop.

I know some of you are curious but honestly, this is your punishment. Your punishment is not Trump and Brexit, your punishment is never truely knowing why Trump and Brexit happened.

This is your hell. You made it.

ChrisNorstrom··on Ask HN: How do I protect my parents from the internet?
I've got 2 computer-illiterate parents and I can confirm the following works very well:

1) Create a user account in Windows that is NOT an administrator account, that way they can't install things without an admin username and password. The PCs admin account should be password protected.

2) Enable the highest level of windows alerts (those "this program wants to make changes or modifications to this PC, cancel or allow" messages). Teach your parents to always click no/cancel/do not allow.

3) Ad blockers like uBlock. Remove shortcuts to, or uninstall Internet Explorer.

4) Use software like DeepFreeze http://www.faronics.com/products/deep-freeze/standard/ it restores the computer to a snapshot you saved every time you restart it. No matter what they mess up or install or screw up, it'll be fixed with a restart.

ChrisNorstrom··on Unsplash – Beautiful photos free to use under the Unsplash License
There goes my evening. Seriously, Thank You for this. This is the best free photo collection I've seen so far and I scout a lot of photo collection sites.

1) I LOVE how you group photos by subject/topic instead of just randomly posting photos and asking the user to search for what they want. Most of the time users don't know what they want and would rather just browse and look around. Browsing lists and collections is more entertaining, engaging, and useful than what other photo sites do: drop off the user in front of a search box and ask "what do you want?". That's like asking someone "tell me everything about you". It forces the user to engage in some serious mental gymnastics and fatigues them. Collections like yours are easier on the brain. Just pick a pretty picture and browse all the pretty photos in that collection. Love it.

2) The photography is beautiful and looks authentic, rare, and avoids that "generic stock photo" feel. These photos look like they're out of somebody's "rare find" folder. They are gorgeous and ready to be used with minimal photoshopping.

3) Most of these already have color correcting and filters applied. Did your site do this? Or did the photographers?

Unique. Useful. Going in my bookmarks. Thanks for this.

ChrisNorstrom··on Image hoster pushes 1.8 PB per month through Cloudflare CDN
Yeah unlimited does have it's limita....OMG you're funneling 1.8 petabytes?!?!! That's like 1,800,000 gigabytes or 1,800 terabytes every month. EVERY MONTH. Unlimited does not mean you can serve the bandwidth of a small country through 1 ISP.

"Please contact us if you have a CDN that is capable and willing of serving 1.8 Petabytes of outgoing traffic per month free of charge," -PostImage

Is the company run by spoiled entitled millennials? It takes a lot of equipment and staff to create a network that can serve that and they just want it all for under $1k? You know data centers have costs too. Other startups spend years of their lives putting together a team that can assemble infrastructure to handle that and they want it for free? For their barely-cash-flow-positive project that doesn't earn them a decent living...

I can't believe they just asked that. Sorry but PostImage sounds like the biggest moocher in the web right now. If your ISP provider says "unlimited data" does that mean you can funnel the traffic of Russia through your internet connection? You want for "free" what others are paying thousands and thousands of dollars for?

What is wrong with you? Seriously? It's like you're trying to run a top-tier web company on pocket change.

I love.love.love. this. I'll try this out for the entire month of November, I promise. I love trying out new productivity apps and software. I like how I can easily look back and see if I've been productive.

I really don't like some of the UI so I crafted my own Stylish css script to override yours, makes it look a bit more professional, currently it looks like it's for middle-schoolers. Sorry.

The following CSS code basically does this: Less kindergarten-buttons, more minimal out-of-the-way UI, smaller headers, more space for content, full width support now stretches and adjusts to browser width, removes rounded borders for non-clickable objects.

ChrisNorstrom··on New data challenges the cultural consensus on public housing
Culture & standards were higher during segregation, we are more integrated than we were in the past and the culture rot is even worse. Your narrative that race and separation has everything to do with it is incorrect.
ChrisNorstrom··on New data challenges the cultural consensus on public housing
You don't think: laziness, anger management problems, party culture, pump & dumping women, being chronically late, not taking care of your kids, beating women and children, being on welfare with 3 kids and having a front yard full of trash, not caring about grades or good behavior. You don't think those things are defective characteristics? If you live a nice neighborhood most of your life you might not get it. When you mix with these people, work with them like I have you start to realize why they are where they are in life.
ChrisNorstrom··on New data challenges the cultural consensus on public housing
Uh, we're from eastern Europe where everyone in the country is the same ethnicity. We had the extreme rich and the extreme poor and we all behaved. Money and civility are two different things. In fact we had communism which followed and really kept people out of opportunities. We didn't walk around acting like rednecks or gangsters. Same as in the USA 50 years ago. When blacks and whites used different bathrooms, and racial segregation was at its peak, still both black and white communities dressed well to go to church, authority was more respected, the family stayed in tact, sex before marriage was taboo. Now despite "integration and desegregation" culture and morality has rotted out society.

Long story short, I don't agree with "government is the problem, government is the solution". Low culture and standards are the problem. High culture and standards are the solution. Regardless of neighborhood or income.

ChrisNorstrom··on New data challenges the cultural consensus on public housing
People like us that used to care just got fatigued out on these issues. We're never given the full story. The right doesn't cover these topics, and the left exaggerates and manipulates them. Leaving a large gap of information about causes and effects both long term and short term. My relatives came to America with little to nothing, they were dirt poor back home, and dirt poor when they moved here. Lived in a poor neighborhood and the first thing they did was get the hell out of there. Reason: the lack of civility of the people living there. Not all poor people are "uncivilized" but not all poor people are "just unfortunately people trying their best" either. Too many of them are where they are for a reason, defective characteristics. And it seems no one wants to be honest about that.
ChrisNorstrom··on The Return of the Utopians
"Some must be silenced or excluded for a utopia to function" and "It doesn't work if you let the wrong people in".

Powerful and brutally honest. Especially in today's political atmosphere of "forced inclusion" and "diversity for the sake of diversity (whether racial, religious, or thought based)". I've witnessed the same thing you're talking about in online communities. They start out being created by one group who adhere to a very specific set of rules (often unspoken rules) and as more people gather the community starts to wilt and die, losing the original cohesion it once had. Those who leave often go and start another community, and the cycle repeats.

ChrisNorstrom··on Roma Gypsies flee to California after Europe turns more hostile
Don't worry Darawk, I was agreeing with you. I even posted video evidence of how those people live and how they destroy communities due to their particular cultural habbits. But the growing left leaning part of the HN hive-mind started the downvoting and I realized it's just not worth it, I deleted it and just left "wow HN". I've been on here for over 7 years (registered 5 years), I remember when the front page was literally linux code snippet links, nerd chat, and startup dreams and non of this political diarrhea / white savoir nonsense. I remember Reddit when it was just 1 Reddit (no subreddits), and I remember browsing Digg starting from the very 1st page. And I've seen the same pattern over and over all across tech/news websites: Like Digg, Mashable, and so many subReddits, HN too over time has become...well... "wonderful and totally tolerant of non non-left-wing views" and "is totally not a hive-mind, not at all, I swear". I'm an independent, neither left nor right. So it's annoying to see this happen over and over and over.

It got so annoying I started taking screenshots of the front page when it first started years ago. Before the new mods, before Altman took over Ycombinator, before the new algorithms, as proof of increasing left-leaning articles that have nothing to do with tech or startups. I should dig up the evidence and release it someday. I ran from the propaganda of conservatism and Fox News from the exposure to it in my teens with the other "Generation-4-Chaners/Anonymous" and now find I'm having to escape liberalism. What happens when there's no place left to go?

I think i'm done with this community. I left Digg for Reddit, Reddit for Mashable and TechCrunch, left those for HN, and now I see no point. There was a time when there were "Show HN" submissions all over the front page. Now they are far and few in between. Tech hangouts all turn into Huffingpost eventually. HN was a sort of last bastion due to the algorithm changes every now and then but it's starting to creep back. The Fall of HN is often laughed at, denied, and explained away using cherry picked evidence. It isn't until you flash a screenshot of HN 7 years ago and compare the headlines that the shock hits you. And each time someone brings this up someone who's also a long term member explains it away. It's useless.

Did you see what happened to Paul Graham when he published his articles on Inequality, Women, and the Problem with foreign accents in startups. All of his articles were honest and accurate and based on the reality of things, and immediately he was attacked by left leaning media. When he stepped down and replaced himself with Sam Altman he was asked about the attacks and he specifically said and I quote "that part I won't miss".

Saving a community on the decline means saving the people who made it decline. What's the point? Let them suffer in their own stench.

ChrisNorstrom··on The Doomed Mouse Utopia That Inspired the 'Rats of NIMH'
I'm actually working for a group that's talking about this problem right now. Their site's not up yet (i'm working on it) but here's a sneak peak.

They've narrowed it down to Daniel Kristoff's theory of "Genetic Rot", according to the behaviors observed.

● evolution is not perfect, each generation has good genetic mutations and bad genetic mutations

● the bad genetic mututations normally die off and are weeded out of the gene pool

● fighting for resources causes natural eugenics and the betterment of a population by only the best get food and the weak dying off

● the mouse experiment basically shows how communism caused ALL mutations to continue to the next generation both good and bad.

● untill eventually an uncontrolled pattern of defective genes plagued the mice and could no longer be weeded out. This is why mice taken out of the experiment did not recover.

● resource abundance caused individual mice who never should have reproduced to reproduce introducing their defect genes into the gene pool. (most animals get a huge decrease in population after a huge increase due to over-abundance of resources)

● the mice reproduced to a point until every single mouse had bad genes and could no longer save the population

● The mouse experiment mirrors what's happening in our society right now

Also, keep in mind this is a very sanitized version of the experiment. Somewhere out there is a complete list of behaviors observed, I can't find it but altasobscura doesn't talk about the controversial findings like "gender roles broke down" and "there was an increase of homosexuality" of the mice. Basically hinting that homosexuality, gender roles, and instinct are all heavily genetic based. And bad genes can often invert or flip instinct.

Gawker is evil and that's why it needs to be preserved as a valuable lesson in propaganda for future generations. So one day when kids ask "show me an example of far left liberal extremist propaganda" you can show them the Gawker Archives.

Anyone want to join me in pooling in some money to web scrape Gawker.com along with the comments for future archiving? Once it's gone it's gone. (and no Archive.org doesn't grab everything, especially if it's hiding behind "click to load more" links)

I'm thinking of doing the same with all of NPR's comments before they get deleted on Aug 23.

ChrisNorstrom··on The Despair of Poor White Americans
This is the problem with using averages to compare people. You can't take all the poor whites, all the middle class whites, and all the rich whites and dump their incomes into a spreadsheet and average it out and say "White Privilege" like the media has done for 7 years now. All the major new outlets from BBC, ABC, CNN, to MSNBC, CBS, and PBS have run stories that basically ask us to look away from "The Poor" and only look towards "The Minority Poor". The same way "black lives matter" asked us to look away from all the people killed by militant police and only pay attention to blacks killed by police. I find the same people preaching "unity" are the ones that are separating and dividing.

When you analyze ethnic or racial groups you need to split up the members of that group into sub-groups to really know what's going on. We need to focus on real social science and not extremist media narratives.

ChrisNorstrom··on The Politically Incorrect Guide to Ending Poverty (2010)
1st Problem of this article: How do WE "over here" fix THEM "over there".

You cannot "fix" another group of people in another country. They have to fix themselves and go through the necessary procedures to stabilize, weed out problems and corruption, and change their culture, people, social mindset, and traditions. All the stable rich countries of today were once violence, corrupt, and environmentally dirty during their earlier years, suggesting a sort of "puberty period" that all nations go through.

One group cannot build a country, achievements, stability for another group. If they try it is almost always only a temporary success, followed by complete failure as soon as the original "building" group pulls out. Google "the white foreigner effect" http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0167268115... the most horrifying side effect is that natives purposely handicap themselves to signal need to an outside charity. This leads to dependency.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/25/world/africa/mosquito-nets...

http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB123758895999200083

In the short term good is done and hearts are warmed but in the long term a nation doesn't develop an immunity to its problems. A charter city would be no different. People would become dependent on the charity, funds, resources, and achievement coming out of the foreign created character city. What incentive do they have to create their own city? If they tried how could they compete with the foreign city?

2nd Problem: The solution and problem in the article is based on an emotional desire to uplift another group of people. Don't you think they want to lift themselves up? Do you believe they want you to lift them up?

What the article suggests, which is basically "nation creation communism" will actually do more damage to a country than good. Because now the native original people of a country cannot compete with the success, wealth, and power of the "colonizers" who are trying to uplift them out of poverty. This is the same series of ideas that sound good and make you feel good but actually cause damage. Countries grow and mature and stabilize on their own at their own natural rate. Trying to artificially "fix" each country ahead of its time, I believe, is immoral. That's like giving your kid steroids because you want them to hurry up and grow faster.
