Chris2048··on Court agrees with EFF: Utah's VPN law demands a technical impossibility
I'm not sure what your point is. Mine was that phrasing this as a limitation on the use of your body is an irrelevant misdirection;

Anything that is illegal and requires use of your body is a restriction in the use of your body.

Purchasing, selling and muling drugs is a voluntary trade, and also illegal.

> limit what women did with their bodies (on camera, for money)

like how murder laws limit what women did with their bodies (strangling people to death, with their hands)

The feature being: don't delete my data belonging by another program? It's kind of too late once deleted isn't it? And now even that other program cannot use the data either.

How does this translate to the vim situation?

> anyone gets to do more or less what they want with the code

so if the software had explicitly installed a root kit, you'd say the same?

If you give out free soup, you get to poison it too?

There's a difference between caring about NS, and letting the government dictate how to do so.

Ironic since menthols are to me associated with an older generation. AFAIK, their original purpose was for smokers with colds / blocked sinuses.

Hmm, game design is a little different to other forms of software, and DF in particular since it's a niche interest that happened gained a following and became profitable. Would a temple-os be exhibited in MoMA?
Chris2048··on Fuck it, make it anyway
> you're not going to bait me into that one!

but it's you throwing around the term. e.g. "economically speaking, that's an art market" - in what sense? How do you define an "art market"? It all seems very tautological.

> aesthetics-driven pursuit

aesthetics can usually biased by utility, to the extent of being a proxy for it. You can find the aerodynamics of a aeroplane or hummingbird wing beautiful, but there is still functionality driving it.

aesthetics is not the opposite of instrumental value; perhaps affective value, or sentimentality is?

> would I pay extra for an artisanal, organic, free-range, hand-coded app

what is artisanal code? I think talking about ux design conflates things, consider only backend code.

Chris2048··on Fuck it, make it anyway
> their "art-form" suddenly has much, much less economic value

Can you define art/artist? If software is art, then what profession isn't?

Software still has value, specifically utility, it's just cheaper to produce, its market value is lower.

How is that comparable to the arts?

Chris2048··on Fuck it, make it anyway
You contrast "like writing code" with "care little for status", but they are not the same things; as are having status, and caring about it.

ok, so what does a dirty novel, or some other pulp fiction convince or inform you of?

Chris2048··on Fuck it, make it anyway

scapegoating isn't really legally viable. corps who outsource their development haven't outsourced their liability.

> just copy your processes, get rid of you because they have their own ideas

Implies a process requiring no expert knowledge or understanding. That doesn't seem to match common experience of professional agentic development.

You are describing vibe coding, which is without human design, review or direction.

Models are getting better at this, but it's not yet clear how practical they will be. They often fail on uncommon tasks, or get increasingly more expensive as the code-base grows.

I think things will change, as the technology develops; problem is corps are acting like we are already there, encouraged by ai-providers.

I'm optimistic about ai, pessimistic about the fallout of ai hype.

Chris2048··on Fuck it, make it anyway
A calculator does no design or review, so what exactly is the llm being used for, no metaphors or riddles please.

because to me this:

"Something simple like adding reactions, adding read receipts ... The LLM easily excels at the task and yet I didn’t have to do it."

Implies to me code gen.

That aside, are you a 'DidntUseIt' sockpuppet, given there are lots of green accounts responding on their behalf..

The agents are building all these small features, up to a full SaaS; and all the code is excellent?

How much time do you spend in code review?

The obvious way would be tax relief on land used for primary residences up to some limit. But the point is the tax wouldn't dis-incentivise land acquisition so long as it wasn't left vacant.

Chris2048··on True Rate of Unemployment
The topic of this sub-thread is whether a "land value tax would fix rich people from parking money in real estate".

You have the option to pass on such a tax burden, as do any other home/land-owner(s), which is relevant to the conversation.

What point are you making relevant to that?
