Chilko··on Show HN: I made an app that helps you find where to stream movies and TV shows
Hi, this excludes some of the major streaming services that we have in New Zealand, namely:

- Neon

- TVNZ+

Could you please add support for these?

Chilko··on ESPHome
Something fun - the ESP32 supports capacitive touch sensing on some of it's pins, so you can turn any conductive surface into a button or input for your smart home setup. This well supported in ESPHome.

Chilko··on Airlines required to refund passengers for canceled, delayed flights
Similarly, here in New Zealand any flights with less than 90 seats do not require security screening. On some routes, our airline flies turboprops (ATR 72) and jets (A320) on the same route depending on the demand / time of day. As it's a short flight (~1 hr), the flight-time is similar with either option but by booking on the ATR you can avoid security screening entirely. Paired with generally small airports, this means I can arrive at the airport 20-30 mins before departure.
Chilko··on 'Lavender': The AI machine directing Israel's bombing in Gaza
> Drones, targeted missiles and now AI allow you to be ruthlessly efficient in killing an enemy

I understand what you are getting at, but if you read the article this is not how this technology is being used, rather the opposite. The AI seems to use very broad criteria / flimsy evidence to decide who is a target, and then it is chosen to strike them specifically when they get home and would typically be surrounded by civilians (mostly women and children).

Their own testing showed 1 in 10 selected targets were not actually militants, but because it is statistically 'correct' (despite loose definitions of correct) 90% of the time all targets will be bombed. Add the fact that collateral damage of 15-20 civilians is accepted even for the lowest ranking militants (and much higher for commanders) who are then targeted with unguided munitions, which makes this quite a lot less 'targeted' and 'efficient' than e.g. US drone strikes in Afghanistan.

Chilko··on The ü/ü Conundrum
> Officially change my name?

My German last name also contains an ü, so when we emigrated to an English-speaking country and obtained dual-citizenship we used 'ue' for that passport and I now use 'ue' on a day-to-day basis. This also means I have two slightly different legal surnames depending by which passport I go.

Chilko··on The Purple Streetscape
Other examples include many cities outside of North America - e.g. in Switzerland, that have very different downtowns to your cherry-picked examples.
Chilko··on Show HN: I made a website to find best bus seat to avoid the sun while traveling
Yep, my bedroom has windows to the south and east, which means here in New Zealand I should not expect any afternoon & evening sun that room. However, currently in summer when the sun is close to setting I get a few minutes of evening sun through the southern window, due to sun setting slightly southwest.
Chilko··on Opal Tadpole – A webcam for laptops
Agreed, the line "WITH AN F1.8 LENS LETTING IN AS MUCH LIGHT AS A PROFESSIONAL CAMERA" is also quite misleading when using a much smaller sensor size.
Chilko··on As the public begins to believe Google isn’t as useful, what happens to SEO?
Indeed, I've had to force myself to start searching in full sentences much more as the results from the old method of keyword searching have steadily deteriorated.
Chilko··on I accidentally saved my company half a million dollars
As someone outside of the tech industry - Big Tech tends to be the term I use the most and is mostly understood by everyone.
Chilko··on Bioregions 2023
In the layers button you can select ecoregions instead, and you'll see NZ has several of those.
Chilko··on Semiconducting Transport in LK99 reproduction attempt
Speak for yourself, I've been living in the future for 15h and 27 minutes already.
Chilko··on When open becomes opaque: The changing face of open-source hardware companies
> no credit was ever given to the original grad studen

Not enough credit perhaps, but this is untrue as Arduino does credit Wiring, the grad student's project. Probably worth noting that one of his thesis supervisors was one of the founders of Arduino.

Chilko··on The force that shapes everything around us: Parking
> The reason is that transit is worse than cars always

As long as 'always' is restricted to a certain lifestyle and worldview, and doesn't take into account the excellent transit systems that exist around the world.

> And in reality it simply means that fewer people go there, because going there is miserable. The city starts converting to low income because anyone with income goes elsewhere.

That's incredibly naive, and I think a lot of European cities are direct counter examples to this. It often makes things a lot less miserable for the people who actually live in the denser urban areas that were previously overrun with cars.

Chilko··on Electric bike, stupid love of my life
I lived up the top of a big hill which used to be grueling climb on my old non-electric bike. Now with the e-bike, I have the choice of taking it slow and not having to put in much effort, or I put in lots of effort but I'll be going twice as fast compared to my old bike and can carry a load of groceries in my panniers.

Essentially, it becomes a choice whether or not you want to use it as workout.

Chilko··on Electric bike, stupid love of my life
Not a particularly nuanced take there - my road legal '250W' e-bike in New Zealand provides electric assist up to 45 km/h, which lets me keep-up with & over/undertake traffic in my dense city. Definitely doesn't feel suicidal, rather practical actually (especially compared to my 60+ km/h hill bomb commute on my previous vintage non-electric bike).
Chilko··on Electric bike, stupid love of my life
Have a look at the Giant Fastroad E+ EX Pro - it's no VanMoof style, but a fairly sleek mid-drive city bike with a frame-integrated battery using a 1x11 Shimano GRX groupset and proper brakes. Depending on region it's also fairly quick - here in NZ they provide electric assist up to 45 km/h.
Chilko··on Ask HN: Any hardware startups here?
I guessed it was Orqa but was surprised about some of the other tech mentioned - I had no idea that they had merged with ImmersionRC!
Chilko··on Free Organ
From the site: "The City of San Francisco will give the organ without charge to a new owner with the stipulation that it must remain intact and historically whole."
Chilko··on How to Find a Missing Person with Dementia
This is exactly what exists, the article covers this towards the end.
Chilko··on Bricking Incident – Public Announcement
All first person view (FPV) goggles (used for drones) produced by the company ORQA have suddenly been bricked due encrypted time-bomb code produced by a subcontractor.

The manufacturer is framing this as a ransomware attack, where-as the subcontractor is saying this is due to a time-limited license for their code: https://www.facebook.com/Swarg-Antenski-sustavi-107429465531...

Chilko··on Get The TLDR Of Any YouTube Video
Indeed, if you're not hung up on another music streaming service like Spotify and watch a lot of YouTubve (especially on mobile) then YouTube Premium is a pretty good offering.
Chilko··on SpaceX, Rogers to connect mobiles phones to satellites in remote Canadian areas
In New Zealand they've partnered with One NZ (Vodafone) for mobile starlink.
Chilko··on Original Prusa MK4
Yes: https://store.bambulab.com/collections/3d-printer
Chilko··on Original Prusa MK4
Agreed. I'd also argue that Blender is a poor suggestion compared to OnShape or Fusion360, which better suited for this type of design.
Chilko··on Generating aerial imagery with your iPhone's Lidar sensor
Hi, this sounds really interesting but I am unable to read the guide as I am getting a 524 Timeout error.
Chilko··on Lo-Fi ATC
This is surprisingly soothing, great concept for background white noise!
Chilko··on “Havana Syndrome” not caused by foreign adversary review finds
It's worth noting that that FBI investigation did not speak to any of the victims.
Chilko··on Tell HN: Do not store any funds in PayPal or use them for anything critical
Yep, have experienced similar surprise negative balances with Visa debit cards in New Zealand as well.
Chilko··on ChatGPT is a blurry JPEG of the web
What's interesting is that Microsoft's implementation of ChatGPT in Bing seems to include linking to references, which is a good step forward in my opinion.
