Cerium··on The government has no plan for America’s 300 billion pennies
Average gift card has a discount of 8 to 20% built in. Looks like Coinstar is currently charging 12.9%, so a gift card could actually be more profitable for them.
Cerium··on Mullvad: Shutting down our search proxy Leta
I switched to Kagi a few years ago and have not looked back. The quality has been great and continues to perform well.
Cerium··on Facts about throwing good parties
I recently arrived at an Indian birthday party at 11 am (the scheduled time) and the host immediately responded, oops I forgot to tell you the real time... everyone else will arrive after noon.
Cerium··on The end of the rip-off economy: consumers use LLMs against information asymmetry
Agreed, A++++++ GREAT POSTER, FAST, ACCURATE LISTING.
Cerium··on We saved $500k per year by rolling our own "S3"
I'm a fellow new Garage user. I have had a great time so far - but I also don't need much. My use case is to share data analysis results with a small team. I wanted something simple to manage that can provide an s3 like interface to work with off the shelf data analysis tools.
Cerium··on Tinnitus Neuromodulator
My wife is deaf in her left ear as well. She doesn't usually tell people, but does tell people that she likes to walk on the left and sit on the left side of rectangular tables.

One interesting effect is that I have developed a preference for sitting or walking on people's right hand side, especially with good friends or people I respect.

The most interesting effect is I have noticed how much people take for granted the ability to sense where sound is coming from. Early on in our relationship I would occasionally perform "magic tricks" where I know immediately where a sound is. She would ask: how did you know where it was?

Cerium··on Be Worried
Yes - but the authority most people have decided to trust is the Algorithm or their favorite LLM.
Cerium··on Where did the Smurfs get their hats (2018)
A simple thanks for sharing these images. I had no idea that garden gnomes could be so artful, interesting, or powerful as those in these two images.
Cerium··on The cost of interrupted work (2023)
Oh how I hate a last minute rescheduling of a meeting. Feeling like I only have 30 minutes, I didn't start anything deep. Such a waste.
Cerium··on "None of These Books Are Obscene": Judge Strikes Down Much of FL's Book Ban Bill
This is why I'm ok with the fact that the library has some books I like and agree with and many that I don't care about, and some I don't agree with.
Cerium··on Happy BuyNothing Day
Similarly, I have a "no same day buy" rule. Usually I wait at least a few days and most of the time by then I don't need the item anymore.
Cerium··on Photographer spends years on street corner capturing same commuters daily (2017)
I think not. I enjoyed looking for details, for example how a backpack is clean in one photo and dirty in the other. Not knowing the details let's the viewer ponder and compair with more curiosity and intrigue. It sets a mystery.
Cerium··on Cognitive decline can be slowed down with lifestyle changes
Beatings will continue until morale improves.
Cerium··on The Ski Rental Problem
At least yours are in the garage. I have a friend who spent years storing a couple of hundred dollars of outdoor gear in a rental storage locker costing $50 per month.
Cerium··on Does the Bitter Lesson Have Limits?
I'm getting the same effect, seems to be the css property "text-underline-position: under;"
Cerium··on Try the Mosquito Bucket of Death
Large new buildings in the Bay Area will use recycled water for toilets as well as irrigation. There are signs above every toilet telling you the water in the toilet is not fit for drinking.
Cerium··on Wii U SDBoot1 Exploit “paid the beak”
Great point, in general I find that the story for security is always hackers but the result is that far more commonly you hack yourself with manufacturing process variation.
Cerium··on Are Diamonds Even a Luxury Anymore? De Beers Reckons with Price Plunge
Lab-grown stones are great. When I buy diamonds it is for function, not proof of work. This means great dispersion, cut, clarity for jewelry or hardness for abrasive tools.
Cerium··on US importers sued for 'greenwashing' Mexican avocados
In the California Bay Area, We don't have avocados in a box, nor perfectly ripe. They are usually in a pile and quite un-ripe (which helps reduce denting in the pile). Depending on size, quality, and organic status they range from about ~1 to ~2.50 each.

You can also buy a full flat of medium size avocados at a Costco Business center for $26 for 35 avocados. They are "stage 2" ripened, which means they will be usable in about 1-2 days on the counter. I buy one and then put them carefully in the fridge and take out about 3-4 at a time. This way I can have fresh ripe avocados for about a month.

Cerium··on Two guys hated using Comcast, so they built their own fiber ISP
Thanks for saying so - I got a flyer and didn't realize they are local.
Cerium··on Two guys hated using Comcast, so they built their own fiber ISP
Downtown San Jose is nice - I have fibers from both AT&T and Sonic. I switched from AT&T to Sonic a couple years ago and have been impressed. I pay half what I did, get 10x the speed, and customer service is much better.
Cerium··on Knowing Steam players are hoarders explains why you give Valve that 30%
There is backlog, and then there is engaging in the four quadrants of hobby interaction[1].

Cerium··on What Microchip doesn't (officially) tell you about the VSC8512
It's been this way forever... They do distribute source (but last time I checked it is with incomplete build info). I think there is also some BS fine print about the licensing fee being for the provided header files.
Cerium··on 10 Years of Pomological Watercolors
Bad keming joke? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomology
Cerium··on Battery-electric "Infinity Train" will charge itself using gravity
I was able to find that they were probably Hitachi trucks, but could not find the source we are likely thinking of.
Cerium··on Few Americans pay for news when they encounter paywalls
Same! I have contemplated it many times since the content is consistently good and I canceled my local paper after they doubled the price twice in the last couple of years.
Cerium··on Curved-Crease Sculpture
And oh how we take it for granted. I recently spent a few minutes trying to make sense of a situation where I was using a corner of a paper for a square. It turned out the piece of paper was not at all square, at least a quarter of an inch out of square!
Cerium··on The Grug Brained Developer (2022)
They might be grug brained but they act big brained. Very clubable.
Cerium··on Dull Men’s Club
Serious response? In that case the set still has a smallest member which can then be removed, if we keep going eventually there will be no uninteresting numbers remaining.
Cerium··on Japan struggles to fend off a world without enough matcha
Me too! But I have been questioning it for 10 years now and every few years we ask, "is this peak matcha?"
