You're just frustrated now because they came for your voice. If they're going to put advertising up against it, they should be held to the same annoying process and responsibility that broadcast media is.
This seems to be much more "squeaky wheel gets the grease" than some political ideology.
Also, this argument is ridiculous. Facebook is NOT US democracy, it's a media company that gatekeeper, like TV before it, Radio before that and townhall meetings before that. Theyve never allowed sex work or profanity on the site and there was little fanfare over that decision. These companies are the next "Type" of media and the extension of that is the power to shape acceptable culture. The real problem is that its being hearlded as both a utility (citizen communication right) and a media company (broadcast and ad network) and dodging the historically clear responsiblities of both camps by claiming to be the other when it comes time to pay the piper.
To end with a clearer analogy. Facebook is cable TV where you are the channel. Then they add commercial breaks between your rants, pictures of cats and support of some political idea. They even ask you to stump for your own "subscribers." Cleverly they've simultaneously made it a messaging product as well to dilute the metaphor above.
If you guys love this story, read this: https://www.amazon.com/Unruly-Places-Spaces-Inscrutable-Geog...
Its a book about places with odd borders, histories and futures that is tantalizing.
The full Sealand story is told here an its breathtaking.
But before I get thrashed for hurthing feelings, the real problem is these networks act like pubs and open networks. Paid amplification is almost certainly the problem in that it allows money to act as speech. by allowing it to reach more people that didnt seek it. Historically a wild fringe idea stayed that way because it was hard to convert people at scale. Now a fringe/bad idea coming from a group of power and "pump up the juice."
It would be interesting if they either limited the pay for audience equation or create hypertransperency around who is behind the message.
All in all, Facebook is going to be heavily regulated over the next decade and I hope they're diversifying somewhere. The newspapers were fractured, "The Bells," and it seems historically governments step in after about 10-20 years of abuse.
This isnt a character attack, it's a substantive attack. And you should care. This ego maniac has his sights set on being the representative talking "tech guy" at the highest form of culture. He was a featured guest on Joe Rogan spouting his empty rhetoric and he indirectly represents us.
He's a walking manifestation of the reputation tech has built as being elitist and out of touch.
Theres that video from two days ago of that (white) union chief screaming and spitting about "how deserve more respect and we are tearing them down" and it was accompanied by an array of tweets that said "He gets treated like a black guy for 2 weeks and he has a mental breakdown." I think this story even in it's detail loose state is an appropriate weapon to even the fight.
The onus is on the enforcement to manage damage, not a citizen who doesn't even know its coming. The intelletualizing of this is ridiculous, its a common sense issue.
You think Newsome would would be indifferent if China grabbed Catalina Island?
nice work.
CEO's, will seeing Juul on a resume preclude you from hiring that person, even if they are a technical fit?
"Gimme a ton of money to run this experiment. If I'm right you'll be rich"
Also, the whole "young people and what not are at low risk" is anecdotal. We have no clue what the longterm, and passive ramifications of this virus are.
Theres just less room for error.
