Centrino··on African Union joins calls to end use of Mercator map that shrinks Africa's size
Can we agree that the 16th-century map of Africa shown with the article, is not in the Mercator projection, as the meridians and parallels are not straight lines? Mercator did use different projections for different maps, depending on their purpose.
Centrino··on Unicorn CEO: "IPO is not the goal" but maybe if you just worked a little harder
I read the whole doc, I think it's excellent advice.

Please provide a PDF version or make your page printable. Even when clicking your ad bar/banner down, a "print to PDF" in Chrome renders a crippled view with parts of the text covered, because of the remains of that ad bar/banner.
Centrino··on Download YouTube Video, Playlist in High Quality
yt-dlp only works for me when it has access to the session cookies of my browser, where I have to be logged in into Youtube. If not, I get the error message "Sign in to confirm you’re not a bot". I'm surprised that your article does not address this issue. Not everyone uses the same machine for downloading Youtube videos as for watching Youtube videos.

Centrino··on Mapping latitude and longitude to country, state, or city
The right term for what you are doing is "reverse geocoding".

What strikes me is that even the center-right CDU and CSU from Germany are viewed as despicable by the author.
Centrino··on SpeechMap: The Free Speech Dashboard for Al
Interesting initiative, but I couldn't find an answer to the most obvious question when exploring the model: what do abbreviations like "evas" and "comp" mean? I suppose that "evas" stands for evasive answer, "comp" maybe for "comply" or "complete answer", but what does that mean exactly?

Also, these columns do not correspond with the vague text on the front page talking about "filter", "refuse", "deny" and "redirect". You have to define exactly what you mean by all these terms, and not switch from "redirect" to "evade" or from "refuse" to "deny" even if you think these words mean the same thing.

I wouldn't call that table a "model overview" but an overview of the results of the model.

Centrino··on Ask HN: I don't have the patience to be an IC. What role would best suit me?
IC? Individual Contributor?
Centrino··on Natural alternative to Ozempic brings results without side effects
The article mentions the peptide "BNP", without explaining the abbreviation. This stimulated my curiosity. It's "BRINP2-related peptide", where BRINP2 indicates a specific gene responsible for the production of the "BMP/retinoic acid-inducible neural-specific protein 2". NCBI gene summary: "Predicted to be involved in cellular response to retinoic acid; negative regulation of mitotic cell cycle; and nervous system development. Predicted to be located in extracellular region. Predicted to be active in cytoplasm; dendrite; and neuronal cell body. Implicated in oral squamous cell carcinoma. [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Nov 2024]"
Centrino··on Ask HN: Where's the AI Magic in Alexa (Amazon)?
Haha, I can relate! The following happened a few days ago:

Me: "Alexa, is it raining?"

Alexa: "It probably won't rain today. There's only a 49% chance at 10 A.M."

Centrino··on Debanking of tech startup founders – Marc Andreessen interview
This is known as Operation Chokepoint 2.0

But in the interview, Andreessen is confusing this with "PEPs" (politically exposed persons) which is a totally different concept applied to politicians and their immediate family members.

Centrino··on Elon Musk offers $1M daily prize to voters who sign petition
If the ability to enter the sweepstake would start after the voter registration deadline, that would be airtight as far as legality goes. The loophole indeed lies in the grey zone, that strictly it isn't a reward for registration, but in reality some people will register just to be able to participate in the sweepstake. Very cunning!
Centrino··on Elon Musk offers $1M daily prize to voters who sign petition
As a sweepstake (essentially a free-to-enter lottery), it is legal.

If it would be a reward to register as a voter, it would be illegal.

The sweepstake is explicitly exclusively for registered voters in certain battleground states.

I've not checked what the deadline for registration is in all the relevant states. For Pennsylvania, one of those states, today is the last day to register as a voter.

Centrino··on Microprogramming: A New Way to Program
"Microprogramming" is the standard term for internal microcode within a CPU. It transforms machine code instructions into sequences of operations the hardware can directly execute. The article in this post gives a totally different meaning to this already existing and established term.
Centrino··on Caroline Ellison sentenced to 2 years in prison
A forfeited amount is not the same as a fine. The 11 billion also does not mean that Ellison is in possession of that amount. It's simply the amount that can be connected, directly or indirectly, to the illicit activity for which she is convicted.
Centrino··on S.F. police are using drones to arrest bipping suspects, officials say
Bipping? Had to google that.

"Bipping is a slang term for a type of car break-in in San Francisco that involves breaking into unattended cars with little noise. The term may have originated from the sound of breaking porcelain sparkplug pieces thrown at car windows, but today thieves more often use a rescue car escape tool called a resqme device."

Centrino··on Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate
In the mean time, there are new posts about this same subject appearing on HN which are not flagged, linking to CNN, NYT etc. But the very first post, linking to the primary source, was flagged. Seems unfair to me.
Centrino··on Phishing scammers impersonate AH employee to drain crypto wallets
The only reason I clicked the link was to know what AH meant. Phishing for crypto assets is nothing new, I wouldn’t have clicked it for that.

Centrino··on Ask HN: What do you think about a CEO providing human name to his business?
To be clear, you mean a first name, also called “given name”, not a surname?

Do you feel uncomfortable when hearing about the Ariane rocket?

Centrino··on The HN UI is terrible
Yes, I've seen stories marked as dupe. But aren't they posts pointing to exactly the same URL or with exactly the same title? That isn't sufficient IMHO. It has to detect posts about the same news subject. It's not a trivial problem, as follow-up stories in the media could be detected as dupes, rightly or wrongly, depending on the criteria of what exactly is a dupe.
Centrino··on The HN UI is terrible
I like the HN UI. I like its minimalistic no-clutter fast-loading timeless design.

The only thing that irritates me on HN sometimes, are duplicate posts/topics. That is essentially the fault of impulsive users who post without checking out if something has already been posted. A duplicate detection algorithm with minimal interference on the UI could be a solution.

Centrino··on Incident: Sun Express B738, unusual voice on ACARS
ACARS is purely text-based and has no voice mode. Something got lost in the description. ACARS could have malfunctioned because the radio frequency it uses was occupied by a voice signal, but I doubt that the pilots would be able to state the cause of the malfunction so quickly.
