CardenB··on The ‘invisible’, often unhappy workforce that’s deciding the future of AI
The recent trend of self supervision in computer vision disagrees with this hypothesis.
CardenB··on California is the only state to hide its spending – nearly $300B a year
It’s supply and demand, not prestige. There are few perfessorship positions, and many qualified to do it, so there is great supply. In this case, supply is high even without high pay due to the prestige.

FAANG high salaries are due to the low supply of engineers skilled enough. Otherwise, FAANG would not compete on pay. As high as FAANG pays, supply is still not high enough to lower pay significantly.

OP is arguing that teachers should not be compared to professors because supply may still not be high relative to demand. Additionally, the job is still essential enough to keep demand high despite lack of prestige.

CardenB··on A study of 20 years of global wealth demolishes the myth of ‘trickle-down’
The poor don’t get poorer- the middle class gets eroded and the volume of poor grows.
CardenB··on Show HN: Get the guitar chords from your Spotify playlists
They have two modes: 1. Transcribed tabs. They own the transcription as they have done with their catalogue in existing Rocksmith games. I believe they claim they use some “AI assistance” here, but I could be wrong. At the end of the day, they pay a large number of musicians to chew through songs and write tabs. 2. Chord following. They use automated transcription to get the chords for a very large number of songs. This is a new mode in the newest game and is entirely automated, but limited.

Ubisoft has a new version of rocksmith coming out and plans to build most of their library on this technology.
CardenB··on Web developer tool secrets that shouldn’t be secrets
I learned vim back in college using this: https://vim-adventures.com
CardenB··on Apple execs describe a “unique arrangement” with Netflix (2018)
Apple doesn’t provide access to these customers. Maybe a small portion are limited to iOS access for Netflix.

In reality there are many general service platforms that provide access to Netflix in combination with ISPs.

If chrome had a 15% fee to allow users to access websites then I think it would be pretty damaging to innovation on the web.

CardenB··on What will programming look like in 2020? (2012)
Can you explain how this is worse than random chance?
CardenB··on Retailers are spending millions to combat organized theft from stores
??? A couple of months ago I literally saw a man get tackled for stealing ties from a high end store in SF nearby union square.
CardenB··on Jim Whitehurst to step down as IBM President
The acronym refers to pay, not tech. IBM doesn't match the pay of FAANG
CardenB··on I was let go for refusing to deploy a dark pattern
He isn’t applying the logic to everything, he is applying it to one thing.

It’s possible for the argument to be true in this context and false in another context.

CardenB··on Nvidia cripples cryptocurrency mining on RTX 3080 and 3070 cards
Due to supply constraints, retail does not represent the true price. 3080s are generally going for $3k on eBay right now. Their move is allowing the price of the card to LOWER back to retail price.
CardenB··on Ask HN: How to negotiate continuing to work remotely?
I think this is a significant part of the problem that has prompted the question.

It would be really helpful to have some insight into what is driving the move back to the office from people on HN.

CardenB··on Mars has right ingredients for present-day microbial life: study
What makes you think it’s safe to assume that Mars has no life?
CardenB··on Americans overwhelmingly say marijuana should be legal
Ah I see.

I feel that it's unreasonable to equate second hand marijuana smoke with second hand tobacco. It's really hard to consume weed to the same extent as tobacco, so the smoke is in much lower quantity.

CardenB··on Americans overwhelmingly say marijuana should be legal
You want weed to be illegal because you don't like the smell of the smoke?
CardenB··on Surround Sound in Headphones
AirPods Pro are normal Bluetooth headphones and support anything as source. You can also use a lightning to 3.5mm cable to connect them to an auxiliary port.
CardenB··on Windows 95 – How Does It Look Today?
I think mainly we have shifted to just never turning off computers and optimizing for standby.
CardenB··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
you want to look at /r/onebag
CardenB··on AstraZeneca: ‘Winning’ vaccine formula is 100% effective against severe Covid-19
I believe the trials show zero severe cases after taking the vaccine.
CardenB··on Measles surging as Covid-19 curbs disrupt vaccinations
It seems likely that it was a good idea to try, but ultimately was not done well enough to have significant benefits.
CardenB··on Show HN: bbox-visualizer – Make drawing and labeling bounding boxes easy as cake
it could be nice to avoid the overhead of moving the gpu box tensors to cpu, potentially.
CardenB··on U.S. Financial Regulator and Banks Urge Action on Climate
That's ok, as long as something gets done. If their bottom line incentivizes action, then the economy is structured well and incentives are aligned.

The issue is that their bottom line was not impacted early enough.

CardenB··on Classes are a way of writing higher order functions
Mutable state is also a readability concern. If you have to model the temporal state of some object in your mind, it is pretty prone to error as you change code.
CardenB··on Remote work is reshaping San Francisco, as tech workers flee and rents fall
For a single guy? New York. DC.
CardenB··on Instagram promises to fix bug after always accessing the camera on iOS 14
Can you link to me a project hat does facial sentiment analysis in an efficient way? Actually curious if it’s possible to do this without hurting battery life much.
CardenB··on iOS14 reveals that TikTok may snoop clipboard contents every few keystrokes
I believe iOS14 has features to detect this: https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/hejb9i/ios14_catches...
CardenB··on Teaching physics to neural networks removes 'chaos blindness'
You are likely correct. I think most researchers would agree, however. The bigger issue is actually learning how to form complex models. People want networks to just learn this implicitly, believing that we would likely impose counterproductive models. Other people simply struggle to incorporate models into the training process.
CardenB··on Wuhan hospital traffic, search engine data indicate virus activity in Fall 2019
This type of pandemic is heavily predicted. It’s not a coincidence that it is being researched. It’s no more coincidence than studying earthquakes near a fault line.
