CarbonCycles··on A fake job offer took down Axie Infinity
LN has now become a dumping ground for spammers, scammers, and a social network site. It's lost its appeal, and I am getting more scammers all the time.

I'm beginning to contemplate what value LN provides as LN has focused on more aggressive marketing tactics, and it's starting to feel like Instagram with the engagements metrics...

Oh yea, I'm still perplexed on how anyone would ever go into an interview w/out doing any homework on the company...even the smallest of start-ups have a presence on the net. They better damn-well have a pitch deck for new capital and employees.

CarbonCycles··on Health trusts swapped patient data for shares in an AI firm. May lost millions
Another AI hype and companies trying to cash in.

Also the sharing of patient data skirts the edge IMO...

CarbonCycles··on FDA suspends Juul ban as company appeals
I agree with you...it's the additional factors that appear to be more muta/carcinogenic than the nicotine itself. Granted (as you said) nicotine isn't ideal.

The amount of sugar and its related health effects IMO completely outweigh the impacts of nicotine.

The large food corps are finding ways to make sugary food more addictive so you have populations of sugar addicts starting at a very early age...the entire picture is so very distorted.

CarbonCycles··on FDA suspends Juul ban as company appeals
Juul was especially targeted by the FDA as Juul's advertising and marketing was specifically targeting the younger crowd. There are other products on the market that are similar to Juul (i.e., RJ Reynolds vape products), but the marketing appears to be different in tone than Juul.

On another note but relevant, there is an interesting conversation that is yet to be had with the Supreme Courts recent ruling on the EPAs overreach of executive power...the same argument could be made with the FDA.

CarbonCycles··on The Most Useful Statistical Test You've Never Heard Of
The KS test is good...I've used it in many situations where non-parametric testing is required.

I'd also argue the title is misleading in that I've seen it used fairly extensively.

CarbonCycles··on FedEx to close data centers, retire mainframes
Oh man...Dell is terrible about this. Not sure what the policy is anymore (esp since they went private), but to get promoted you had implement a significant cost savings project, which ironically lead to multiple implementations and reversals of policies...they all showed a cost savings but it depended on your perspective.
CarbonCycles··on 4 in 5 Americans who need insulin have taken on credit card debt to cover cost
Also consider this, different manufacturers of "short-acting" and "long-acting" respond differently within people's bodies. My daughter responded very differently between Humalog and Novolog even though they are both considered "short-acting".

Another problem to factor in with costs is if you have a HSA (and some other insurance plans). Many of the insurance companies are forcing ppl to purchase their supplies through a handful of "authorized" medical suppliers. If you fail to purchase through them, they will not apply the costs against your deductible, which I think is completely BS. To add insult to injury, these "authorized" medical suppliers mark up the supplies substantially (compared to Costco and other pharmacies).

Something is really broken in this model...

CarbonCycles··on 4 in 5 Americans who need insulin have taken on credit card debt to cover cost
I argue many Type 2 patients do a VERY POOR job on average on monitoring their diabetes. Many Type 2 still have moderately functioning cells that manufacture insulin...Type 1 have no choice.

I argue the opposite in that Nightscout and other initiatives that predominately serve the Type 1 community help push the advancement of monitoring, etc. that benefit the rest.

CarbonCycles··on 4 in 5 Americans who need insulin have taken on credit card debt to cover cost
IMO it's not the regulation that is the problem...it's the entire healthcare system we have in the US.

Humalog and other types of the same exact insulin are pennies on the dollar in other countries with very different healthcare compensation programs between the vendors and purchases. It's bizarre to say the least.

CarbonCycles··on 4 in 5 Americans who need insulin have taken on credit card debt to cover cost
That is very true...Insulin now of days is very different then when it was first introduced. For example, there are now "long-lasting" and "fast-acting" insulin that has been molecularly modified for different outcomes.

Diabetes is a very old disease that ironically is pushing the limits of sensor fusion, but it is very poorly understood by people outside of the Type 1 community.

I personally wish these two diseases were completely renamed as it does a disservice to both Type 1 and 2 patients.

CarbonCycles··on 4 in 5 Americans who need insulin have taken on credit card debt to cover cost
There are two types of Diabetes...type 1 and 2. I don't agree with your comment on reducing obesity as Type 1 is a much different disease than Type 2.
CarbonCycles··on 4 in 5 Americans who need insulin have taken on credit card debt to cover cost
I am aware of situations where ppl have crossed over legally into Mexico from the US to purchase insulin at a substantially reduced cost.
CarbonCycles··on Ask HN: I realise data science is not for me and feel depressed
Lots of good advice given. I echo what many have said about Data Science..it's an overloaded phrase that means anything and everything to everyone. It's important to understand the context in which that the person is applying it.

I did a mid-career change from working decades applying advanced control theory to Data Science. The transition was very natural in that many of the curriculum and principles taught overlapped naturally with Data Science (what it was called at that time). To me, I stress the SCIENCE part of data science that involves designing experiments, developing theory, writing the code/drivers needed to drive the hardware, building the hardware, etc. Unfortunately, my definition has become the outlier. Side note...I have noticed that DS is becoming interchanged more and more as a very advanced BI/BA role, which further dilutes the conversations. Basically, what I'm getting at is that it's never too late to change...just gotta keep asking questions and failing (in a good way).

I'm glad you realized this earlier rather than later. Based on your ideal job description, I think you would make an ideal back-end developer...possibly full-stack?

Good luck!

CarbonCycles··on Goldman Sachs invests $250M in compressed air energy storage
This isn't new...I recall grad students working on this as far back as 2010.

Some citations from an article: “Bottled wind could be as constant as coal.” Wired Magazine. Retrieved 7/15/2010, 2010, from http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2010/03/compressedair-plan... 59

CarbonCycles··on Ask HN: What is the architectural legacy of Hadoop?
Distributed processing at massive scale...used for data transformation, stateless algorithm deployment, data mining/discovery at scale. If memory serves me correctly, still used at EBay, Google and other companies for very low level work.
