CapstanRoller··on Carbon capture and storage is a fantasy
>If you are taking overproduced solar and turning it into methane/ammonia

And that overproduced solar is made using... petroleum.

The argument is very simple: we're basically just burning up oil with extra steps, then pretending the intermediate products can somehow undo the damage caused by burning up that oil (and now claiming that we're getting fuel back!) aka "extend and pretend"

We need to stop putting that carbon into the atmosphere, because the reality is that the process isn't reversible on human timescales. The only answer seems to be degrowth, but asking for negative GDP is basically heresy.

CapstanRoller··on Pattern of brain damage is pervasive in Navy SEALs who died by suicide
Sometimes suicides are not due to emotions, but facts. Please do not assume emotionality or irrationality on the part of those who do it or consider it.

Source: I am a man who has, and is, "falling through the cracks" as a child abuse victim with multiple disabilities, no hot job skills, and a marginalized identity.

My life is slipping away and I'm almost 40. I am an extremely suboptimal individual as far as capitalism is concerned. The passage of time has only cemented this very real and very grim outlook.

The "powerful state officials" are already doing what you fear they might do, and have been doing it for longer than I've been alive. They do it with prisons or under terms like "austerity" of "welfare queens" or "dole moochers"

Disabled people are treated like garbage. Look to the USA or UK for immediate examples.

"Aktion T4" never went away, it just got privatized.

There is no support or viable path forward for people like me, short of going on Social Security Disability and living in basically a slum if I'm lucky. Honestly If something like MAID was available, I would absolutely take it.

No, I am not irrational or acutely suicidal. No, I do not need some hotline. My upbringing and disability has taught me exactly how society views me over the course of decades. No, touching grass isn't going to solve it.

I have a partner and a job (for now). Partner understands what I'm going through, and is also marginalized and partially disabled, in a dead-end job, also circling the drain.

I was writing about myself and others I know in the same boat.

Go talk to some disabled people and otherwise marginalized people (due to skin color, sexual orientation, neurodivergence, disability, etc. -- often several overlapping things) who are clinging by their nails to the workforce. You'll find many similar stories.

Many of us are gone already. Many of my friends are gone or on their way out (homelessness, etc).

The kind of comprehensive help we need simply isn't there. We disappear quietly. You don't see us go, and we are not noticed or missed by anyone except our immediate circle or whatever community we can cobble together.

Seriously, go talk to people. You'll find that this is a common but unspoken thing.

>The real issue is that everyone wants to live in the same places

They want to live where they can survive, and survival is dependent on money.

Many people (myself included) would be perfectly happy living in a quiet remote area with basic amenities.

CapstanRoller··on Pattern of brain damage is pervasive in Navy SEALs who died by suicide
One way to think about it is via the concept of body autonomy/sovereignty: your life is in your hands. IMHO dignified peaceful suicide should be a right granted to all free individuals. If one is free to live, why is one not free to die? But that is too radical of an idea, and upsets all sorts of people (especially the money men)

Sometimes opting out is the only rational choice. If there is no support in society for an individual who cannot work and generate profit, if there is no support in society for an individual who is terminally ill (expensive palliative care aside), if there is no support in society for an individual who has "fallen throigh the cracks" (and the cracks are mighty wide), then what is there to do? Slowly die on the street?

This thinking can lead to all kinds of dark paths, such as the state being in charge of the matter (and abusing it, as they can already abuse it via the carceral system), but ultimately we have to confront the fact that as a society we often leave people with no way out, collectively shrug our shoulders, and then act horrified when they take the only viable option that immediately removes all suffering.

People who are uncomfortable with suicide are ultimately uncomfortable with facing the reality that they live in a society that encourages it.

CapstanRoller··on Bossware is a big legal risk
Going even further: what if it's for your upcoming lesbian wedding, and the company didn't know that? Maybe the CEO hates lesbians and this information somehow trickles up and you get fired later for a "bad culture fit"? Maybe you have a disability, a serious medical condition requiring FMLA leave, or something else.

Maybe you'll sue for it. Maybe all those activity logs become part of the evidence. Maybe there are other people who got fired under similar circumstances, and you form a class action... After all, who can say that the company isn't engaging in illegal discriminatory behavior based on those logs, simply because the logs were conveniently available and detailed?

Lots of big potential problems here for everyone.

Your argument doesn't match reality. We don't need hypotheticals here:

McDonalds workers in EU countries earn significantly more than their US counterparts, yet a Big Mac costs the same of just a few pennies more.

What does child-bearing have to do with any of this? There are plenty of humans in the world, and plenty of children (including orphans).

If you really care that much about passing on knowledge, write a book or get into teaching. You'll reach a much wider audience that way, and if your knowledge is indeed valuable then your impact will exceed many human lifespans. Literature can survive for a thousand years at least.

Creating entire new humans simply to use them as personal data storage devices seems cruel and bizarre. Maybe consider a NAS instead?

CapstanRoller··on When new hires get paid more, top performers resign first
>we need the next generation of people

Who is "we"? Are you a business owner in need of an ever-increasing pool of cheap labor, or a business owner in need of an ever-increasing customer base, or a land owner/real estate developer/landlord in need of an ever-increasing population requiring housing?

(I won't even get into the massive environmental impact of having a child, let alone three!)

CapstanRoller··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
I'm someone who has primarily used OS X, iOS, and Linux for pretty much the entirety of my life. The story about getting data out of iMessage comes from 100% personal experience. This isn't fanboyism — Apple's hostility toward people like me is palpable and factual.

Interacting with Apple's products as a software developer who cares about open source, data portability, etc. is getting harder and harder to justify. The same goes for Google.

What drew me to Apple initially was that they had an actually-existing polished POSIX-compliant desktop environment that was far more open than anything Windows had (or has, to this day).

What you're seeing here are the lamentations of early adopters witnessing all those great features, and the philosophy behind them, slowly going away.

CapstanRoller··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
It is possible to export iMessage threads by purchasing an Apple computer and enabling "iCloud for Messages", at which point the messages will be synced to the computer and stored locally in an SQLite database then exported using open source tools... unless you sent too many messages or attachments, at which point you also have to purchase an additional iCloud subscription based on how much storage you need.

Hopefully you can accomplish all this within the return window of the computer (or purchase a used one). The iCloud subscription fees are non-refundable. You can also just give up, keep the computer, and embrace the Apple ecosystem.

Thank you Tim Apple, very cool!

Amazon Prime was originally an add-on to regular Amazon accounts that provided expedited delivery as a flat rate subscription. Later, Amazon got into the streaming business and bundled access to films and shows into the Prime subscription. For a while it was kind of a useless perk since the available content was old or low quality.

Later, as Amazon acquired more popular content and then created an in-house production studio, they added the ability to rent or "purchase" (rent) streaming video content on a per-episode/season/film basis without requiring the full Prime subscription service.

This was designed to address Amazon customers who were primarily (pun intended) interested in the video content, not the physical goods.

CapstanRoller··on The absurdity of the return-to-office movement
RTO is driven by the inertia of economies of cities themselves.

What happens when office workers no longer have to be in the office? What happens to the physical buildings, the people who maintain them, the local businesses who serve the office workers (e.g. lunch), etc? There are many knock-on effects.

WFH, on a large scale, is forcing us to rethink the concept of cities, suburbs, infrastructure, housing, transit, telecom, etc.

The fact that WFH has been shown to be viable on a large scale indicates that we are probably going to experience a massive societal shift at all levels. A shift to where? No one knows yet.

CapstanRoller··on Cities are asking SCOTUS for more power to clear homeless encampments (2023)
There are tons of marginally-housed people who are just normal folks who couldn't afford rising rents. You just don't see them because they tend to stay in cars, motels, or couch surf.

The people you mention are a tiny visible minority.

Something like this tool-less Sabrent NVMe enclosure ($30 https://a.co/d/2JOZsHn) paired with an inexpensive M.2 SSD.

Not sure how gracefully the enclosure downgrades to USB 2.0 speeds, but it's very handy and very fast.

The SSD doesn't need to be fancy. It's overall bigger than a typical thumb drive, but much more reliable and the SSD can be easily swapped out. The detachable USB C cable on the enclosure is also very convenient.
