CapacitorSet··on Why we wrote our Kafka Client in Pony
That's not the impression I got from the article, which cites performance, API architecture and integration with existing codebases.

Is the "dr" in "tl;dr" literal?

CapacitorSet··on Vulnerable industrial controls directly connected to Internet
That sounds weirdly familiar. (Hello S7 project files?)
CapacitorSet··on Strava heatmap can be used to locate military bases
To expand on this, it takes three points to identify a circle, so you'd need to leave home and return from three different roads (at least at the intersection with the circle).

>They don't, but I'm confused how that matters.

>I can easily unplug them and insert my own [keyboard/mouse]

Can you see where the problem lies? For you to be able to insert your own kb/mouse, you'd need to bring it from home in the first place. And while it might work if you're at an Internet cafe which isn't super strictly controlled, in an office with more stringent security requirements and checks you'd at least raise some eyebrows.

CapacitorSet··on Strava heatmap can be used to locate military bases
Do these places typically let you bring a mouse/keyboard from home?

There's people who are smart enough to design TEMPEST standards and a private global network, you'd think they could design something sufficiently idiot-proof to send military orders with ease. For fuck's sake, a basic messaging app hosted on military servers would do the trick, and it would be no different for users (rather than the Messages app, use the military app).
CapacitorSet··on If you watch closely enough, everything is a speaker
Silly question: isn't this phenomenon bound by the Nyquist limit, which means it would take at the very least 4k fps to reconstruct music (considering that a soprano can get no higher than 2 kHz)? That sounds like an impossibly high framerate.
CapacitorSet··on How a fix in Go 1.9 sped up our Gitaly service by 30x
Reading through an old issue (can't link right now, am on mobile), it seems that the main reason for not using libgit2 in Gitaly is performance, since it would read too many unused files.
CapacitorSet··on How a fix in Go 1.9 sped up our Gitaly service by 30x
I wonder how much it would speed up if they were using libgit2 directly.
CapacitorSet··on Something doesn’t ad up about America’s advertising market
Indeed, 50% advertising seems outright ridiculous. Want to watch a 2-hours film? You'll watch two hours (!) of advertising. That's silly.
CapacitorSet··on Report content directly to GitHub Support
I think the reason you don't often see spam on GitHub is also a matter of convenience. While GitHub as a whole is very large, there are few people reading a specific issue, and posting spam elsewhere doesn't really make sense (nobody will look at your "buy-viagra-now" repo, nor will many people notice a new issue/PR called "Buy Viagra now"). And even then, you can assume that all readers are sufficiently tech-aware and won't fall for direct spam. From the spammers' point of view, you're wasting resources on a platform that has virtually zero chances of yielding visitors, as opposed to mail spamming which has higher chances in virtue of higher visibility and less conscious users.
CapacitorSet··on Branchless Doom
Has it ever been used against reverse engineering in the wild? Its lack of compiler features (it's based on lcc IIRC) and the sheer slowness of any operation makes it quite unsuitable for production usage.
CapacitorSet··on The Amazon worker: paid £18,000 a year to shift 250 items an hour
>humans are largely drawn to these things that represent or require the toil and suffering of invisible anonymous masses. It’s weird, but it seems fundamental to humanity.

Consumers are largely drawn to low-cost products, which require the exploitation of masses. It is fundamental to capitalism, but not to humanity.

CapacitorSet··on Building a Website with C++
tl;dr: CGI.
CapacitorSet··on Luna 1.0 Beta is out
The examples list failed to download, so I had the pleasure to try to program on my own (no, I'm not ironic, it's actually rather fun!) with the help of a bit of knowledge about functional programming.

The most important thing, i.e. the concept behind the language, is very cool. Though not a groundbreaking idea, the visual model is certainly an interesting outlook on understanding programming that goes beyond the trivial Scratch/flowchart software. The language itself seems to be very powerful, too, as is expected of functional languages. I like that functions can be defined on prototypes (eg. List.map) as well as its visual representation, though it took me a bit to figure it out ("why is it `list . map (+ 1)` and not `map list (+ 1)`? What's the `.` operator?", followed by "... oh, it's simpler than I thought").

The documentation is very basic - I wish the "Starting out" section included at least a hello world (eg. writing a function that returns `[1, 2, 3].map (+ 1)`, both in the GUI and in code). I can do that tomorrow (17/01 in the UTC afternoon), if needed!

The editor is okay, for a beta. It's quite "rough around the edges", with a few errors popping up here and there, but it's usable (though accidentally made it unusable, requiring a restart of the application, with a syntax error - but again, it's okay for a beta).

Anyway, it's a very cool project that I'll be keeping an eye on in the next months. Thank you for your work!

CapacitorSet··on Luna 1.0 Beta is out
Some impressions right after the download:

* I can't see why I have to give my e-mail address.

* The Electron setup process is very nice! Though, I wouldn't have minded a lightweight installer, with little more than a wrapper around curl.

* After installing the software, I can't see it anywhere - nor from the XFCE app finder, nor in $PATH. I know I should read the documentation, but it'd be nice if I could at least find it from the app finder (it's a matter of adding .desktop files, I think?).

CapacitorSet··on Crooked Style Sheeding – Webpage tracking using only CSS
Indeed, that would be enough to stop the dynamic tracking - no need to go full no-CSS.
CapacitorSet··on Poverty-Fighting Startups
Poverty-fighting? They're quite literally poverty-exploiting.
CapacitorSet··on Alert About Missile Bound for Hawaii Was Sent in Error, Officials Say
>What is interesting that employee probably meant no harm, but compare this to that SWAT murder a month earlier.

Swatting is intentional, triggering the alert wasn't (at least, so it seems). It's not like the operator pressed the button knowing that it would trigger an alert and expected it not to be taken seriously; he didn't mean to trigger the alert at all.

CapacitorSet··on Firefox bullshit removal
>Allow running of all 64-Bit NPAPI plugins >Allow running of unsigned extensions

That doesn't sound very nice.

CapacitorSet··on Continuous low-power music recognition
Of course their baseline for privacy is not "leaks as little user data as possible", but "does everything on the cloud". Hence it seems to respect user privacy from their point of view.

Not that they have a reasonable point of view, of course.

CapacitorSet··on Opera now protects you from cryptojacking attacks
>Opera is an awesome browser which very few people use.

I thought well of it, until it got acquired by the Chinese. How has it been since?

CapacitorSet··on Cryptovirology: The Birth, Neglect, and Explosion of Ransomware
I find it weird that a cryptographer was required.

I'm no cryptographer, but I know by rule-of-thumb that AES with a randomly-generated key will do the job just fine.

CapacitorSet··on Zero-Width Characters: Invisibly fingerprinting text
Do you happen to have a link to these "content transposition" tools?
CapacitorSet··on Ask HN: What did you work on in 2017?
Mostly box-js, a JavaScript emulator used for malware analysis: https://github.com/CapacitorSet/box-js/
CapacitorSet··on AI-assisted fake porn are being used by people on Reddit for self-completion
Yeah, but merging the new face with the old picture is not the purpose of this tool. Rather, consider how the new face has a realistic expression, and how indeed the skin tone doesn't match perfectly.
CapacitorSet··on AI-assisted fake porn are being used by people on Reddit for self-completion
Quick preview: u/deepfakes, https://www.gfycat.com/UnsungTotalAmericancrow (NSFW).

Very cool, it has a few problems with merging the face but the expression is very convincing. Obviously, it doesn't work very well for very different faces (https://imgur.com/gallery/OpD3RXC SFW).

CapacitorSet··on Keybee: a new keyboard layout designed specifically for touchscreen devices
I think the concept is cool, I've always been interested in alternative input methods. However, I agree that patenting it is bullshit.

The keyboard is interesting, it takes a while to get used to the new layout but once you get the hang of it it seems fun.

CapacitorSet··on How to hack a turned-off computer, or running unsigned code in Intel ME [pdf]
As far as I know it's not exploiting vulnerabilities, just the fact that it won't mind if most modules are not present.
CapacitorSet··on Uber is officially a cab firm, says European court
>Is the contractor thing a little bit on the suspicious side? Definitely. Should they pay their "driver partners" more? Definitely. Do I think that this problem is uber's fault? Most definitely not.

The contractors thing is a tax avoidance scheme at the sole advantage, and responsibility, of Uber.
