CHsurfer··on A Taste of JavaScript's New Parallel Primitives
I keep hoping that JS would evolve to support the actor model, a la Erlang/Elixir, with their process based persistence, concurrency via message passing, etc. It just seems so much simpler and tractable than this proposal.
CHsurfer··on NASA proposes new propulsion to cut Mars voyage to 3 days

CHsurfer··on Switzerland begins tests on the longest train tunnel in the world
Im a dual US and Swiss Citizen. My taxes are lower in Switzerland. Of course I still have to pay the difference back to the US, but that's not the point. Switzerland has such a great infrastructure because they have been making steady, incremental investments over a long time. They accept that a project can have a very long payback period. Also, they invest to keep their infrastructure very well maintained, which keeps utility high and makes major overhauls less frequent, thus extending the duration that they benefit from their original big investment.

So I think you don't need high taxes, but rather a long term outlook and the will to execute it, across multiple election cycles. Boston's Big Dig is the most recent example of such a project from the US that I can think of.

CHsurfer··on California Is Sitting on the Solution to Its Drought Problem
Could the sisterns be used on the farms? Scrape off the top soil, install sisterns, replace top soil. Plant crops.

It should be cheaper than digging up streets.

Not really relevant, but when I clicked on this link, in my mind, I had understood 'Nebraska sky disk' and was curious about what those crazy corn huskers were up to...
CHsurfer··on Ask HN: What is the best JavaScript stack for a beginner to learn?
I picked riot.js to learn javascript as it seemed to rely most heavily on solid javascript program paradigms rather than abstractions introduced by the framework. So far I'm happy, with this choice.
CHsurfer··on Trouble at the Koolaid Point
I guess the point is that the system is broken by default and we need many, smart, well-motivated people to fix it. This is what she is pointing out. If people don't understand and accept that it is broken, it won't get fixed.
CHsurfer··on U.K. National Grid status
It's actually specific to combined cycle gas turbine plants where the waste heat from the GT is used to generate steam and eventually additional energy. This is opposed to simple cycle GTs where the mechanical output gas turbine is the only source of energy to the grid.
CHsurfer··on Amazon Zocalo
It sounds like a Sharepoint killer.
CHsurfer··on What If U.S. Cities Just Stopped Participating in the War on Drugs?
I live near Zurich, which in the Nineties had a lot of issues with public drug use. For example, all bathrooms in public places and major department stores had blue lights instead of normal lights because you can't see the veins in your arm so it's hard to shoot up. There was also a serious crime element as addicts were robbing people to get money to buy drugs. Now, you can get them for free at clinics. With their new policies, the addicts are no longer nearly as visible and the related crime seems to be practically gone. The blue lights in the bathrooms are gone, needle park is gone and it's generally a very nice city to live in.

CHsurfer··on Portia, an open-source visual web scraper
At first, this seems correct. It's definately easier to get scraping with something like Capybara and a suitable js enabled driver, but in my experience, this solution is less reliable. Async loaded data can time out and don't get me started on the difficulties of running the scraper with cron jobs. In the end, I migrated even my JS heavy pages to Mechanize based solutions. It takes a few extra requests to get the async data, but once you get that figured out, it's rock solid - till they update the site design ;-)

I guess you mean profiting.

Finally, information privacy (of which, secret bank accounts are one aspect) is pretty relevant topic today, and many people on this site would prefer to have more of it.

CHsurfer··on Swiss to vote on 2,500 franc basic income for every adult
There are some on-line electronics stores that run quite efficiently. In these places, the price is much closer to the USD equivalent in similar stores in the US. I think this supports the argument above related to Higher labor costs driving up prices.
CHsurfer··on Swiss to vote on 2,500 franc basic income for every adult
It's a really nice place to live. You pay for what you get...
CHsurfer··on Why I gave up my US passport
US citizen, living in Switzerland. I don't want to give up my citizenship and I don't mind to pay some tax to the US. I did get a great education and attitude growing up there, but the risk of making a mistake could be ruinous to my family (French wife, two kids born here). It's fair that if you make a mistake, you pay a penalty, but with the current rules, it turns into a crime. Very scary because it's so complicated.
CHsurfer··on Sex drive-in opens for business in Switzerland
US expat living in Switzerland here.

Zurich used to have a really bad crime problem associated wiith drug addicts. Google 'needle park'. They started to provide the drugs for free in clinics, tied with option conselling, etc. The difference is really remarkable. Now, Zurich feels much safer than most other cities it's size.

This seems to be a similar approach, based on the good results of their drug policy.

CHsurfer··on Buyer sued for posting factual negative review on eBay
Personally, I think lawyers should be dis-barred for bring a frivolous claim to court solely on the hopes of winning because the defended cannot afford to defend themselves. It is an abuse of the power they have been given with their right to practice law.

CHsurfer··on How to Escape from {{ #PROGRAMMING_LANGUAGE }}
Wondering if GO would be considered a good candidate in the 'exotic' category.

-People seem to enjoy programming with it
  -Makes somethings very easy (concurrency)
-Standardized formatting, makes everyone else's code easier to read or vice-verse.
Just not sure if people are doing 'work' yet or still mostly playing with it.

CHsurfer··on Wedding Photographer Threatened with Ludicrous $300,000 Lawsuit
This situation, where a lawyer uses the financial threat of having to deal with the legal process (little to no cost for the lawyer, great cost and risk for the defendant) to win a highly questionable lawsuit for his (the lawyer's) personal gain is highly disturbing - speaking as a non-lawyer.

It's bullying, plain and simple. Carreon is another example, and I'm sure there are thousands of such threats made a month that we don't hear about.

I think that this is a complete abuse of the power that is given to the attorney and should result in disbarment.

CHsurfer··on Microsoft Introduces New "Surface" Tablet
My wife has a bad back, and even carrying a 13" laptop around for and extended time causes her a lot of pain. She would kill for a tablet with a keyboard that she could use for work while traveling (mostly, power point, word and a bit of Excel).

Now, if only her company (60k+ employees) would upgrade from XP...
