CGMthrowaway··on Radiation link in flight attendant's breast cancer, French court finds
Smoking on flights is less dangerous than lithium batteries. At least a cigarette fire can be seen and put out. A lithium battery in thermal runaway can explode and is not possible to extinguish as it is self-perpetuating.
CGMthrowaway··on Trade (and Tariffs)
Maybe letting other countries rob us blind is worse. The US has hardly any factories left. Is that "peace" or is that just losing, slowly?

Open borders can be GREAT, but they can also be a point of vulnerability if we lose control of them

CGMthrowaway··on Trade (and Tariffs)
Totally, that is a great and valid add
CGMthrowaway··on Trade (and Tariffs)
I totally agree trade should feel fair. If the US sends jobs, money, food or goods to other countries, then we shouldn't get garbage back.

Tariffs are a way of warning other countries "don’t take us for a ride." They help American workers, factories and towns that were hurt when jobs went overseas.

Tariffs shouldn't feel like hurting yourself for no reason. They are an important tool for standing up for yourself when other countries (to say nothing of bad trade deals) want to take advantage of you

CGMthrowaway··on Study reveals UnitedHealth's profit margins four times what it claimed [pdf]
@getnormality Two main differences:

1) medical loss ratio rules mean insurers are expected/required to pass a certain percent of premium on as payment for medical services, in a way that a grocery store is not required

2) insurer is selling you a contract that they will pay your medical bills if you have any - they are NOT retailing you medical services

3)

CGMthrowaway··on Dolly Parton has died
Thankfully we have Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, the White Stripes, etc for you
CGMthrowaway··on Dolly Parton has died
Shameless plug for the Dolly Parton Book Club, for which you can register your child (even not yet born) and they will send them a free age-appropriate book every month until they turn 5. https://imaginationlibrary.com/
CGMthrowaway··on Was modern art a CIA psy-op? (2020)
> It is the same reason for serial/12 tone music

I don't see ANY dearth of originality in American 12-tone music during the cold war. What are you meaning by this?

CGMthrowaway··on Was modern art a CIA psy-op? (2020)
>Most of greatest works of modern art are European

Convincing post-war europe that they are outside the influence of the US was also a great psyop

CGMthrowaway··on Was modern art a CIA psy-op? (2020)
>It self-propagates

Part of the design spec of the psyop, perhaps

CGMthrowaway··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
Peak oil is not really a thing anymore, we are on to global mean surface temperatures now.
CGMthrowaway··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
We are doing a lot. Almost 90% of electricity capacity added last year was renewables. Nearly 1 in 3 cars sold are now EVs. The world is spending over $2 trillion every year on low‑carbon energy investment. Solar and wind have already avoided more than 2 gigatons of CO2 being added to the atmosphere. In the US, the IRA will drop emissions 40% to below 2005 levels.

What do you mean we are doing nothing?

CGMthrowaway··on Wildfires across Europe detonate forgotten World War bombs
Specifically, “a few sporadic detonations” were recently heard in Belgium.

Aside from that, France says a wildfire uncovered a cache of suspected WWII-era ammunition, which did not detonate. No specific reports of any weapons exploding in Germany or Holland either. Slovakia removed and buried two naval mines for a controlled explosion (not wildfire related) and Germany and Hungary each found a bomb as well (not wildfire related).

The subheadline "High heat has caused several weapons to explode in France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands" is not fully supported by the article or the facts.

CGMthrowaway··on Watching TikTok and Instagram deactivates the cognitive control network: Study
Tiktok is also well-known for giving brand-new users/first-time posters a TON of artificial boosted exposure tuned for follower and engagement growth of the content they post, to give them hope and dreams of becoming an influencer before eventually tuning down the algorithm to normal levels.

Ask anyone who ever posted on tiktok - "when i first started I got a ton of new followers and likes! "

CGMthrowaway··on Watching TikTok and Instagram deactivates the cognitive control network: Study
They are all reward hacking, but tiktok is audiovisual immersion, dating apps are romantic validation and twitter is outrage/information foraging

CGMthrowaway··on The federal keyword lists that canceled billions in research funding
>If you want to compare Obama and Trump insofar as “presidents generally don’t do 90% of what they say” that is valid but to imply their admins are/were anything alike beyond that would be ridiculous. I’m assuming that’s not what you mean but I just need to throw that out there.

Yes you're right, I absolutely did not mean to imply that. I just forgot to say "orange man bad" as a signoff. Thanks

CGMthrowaway··on Buy Your Friends Batteries
How do I properly think about the fire hazard posed by a big battery in my house?
CGMthrowaway··on The federal keyword lists that canceled billions in research funding
People said the same thing about Obama (cult of personality), who was also elected for a second term despite a number of big broken promises, including closing Guantanamo Bay, cutting the national deficit, passing cap and trade, creating a public health insurance option in the ACA, comprehensive immigration reform, and fostering bipartisanship
CGMthrowaway··on The federal keyword lists that canceled billions in research funding
GDP growth was consistently higher in the 19th century, prior to the Fed, income tax, welfare and all the rest. Imagine what we could do with today's technology

CGMthrowaway··on At-home test for infected ticks could improve Lyme Disease diagnosis
Correct. The outbreak was first recognized in 1975 in Old Lyme, Connecticut, directly across the Long Island Sound from the Plum Island Animal Disease Center (a lab which had been doing explicitly offensive biological weapons research until at least 1969), which led to an unverified theory about an escaped bioweapon.

Genetic studies and museum tick specimens prove the bacteria existed in North America for thousands of years before the lab was built. Whether there was gain of function done on it is not publicly verified.

CGMthrowaway··on Brain turns listening inward during REM sleep, EEG recordings suggest
So the brain is less alert to outside noise during sleep. This is news?
CGMthrowaway··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
>This species didn't just die, it was exterminated by humans.

Which species? The (non-extinct, not exterminated) cod fish whose ecological niche has been taken over to some extent by a small shark species?

CGMthrowaway··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
Not all fishery crashes are the same. Alaskan sockeye had a huge crash in 2014 which was immediately followed by huge gluts in 2015-2017. Same thing happened last year after a terribly weak run in 2024. Important to look at specific facts and context
CGMthrowaway··on Sergey Brin has spent $100M to fight California's proposed billionaire tax
Which millionaires do you want to tax and which will you leave alone? Can you name them?
CGMthrowaway··on Sergey Brin has spent $100M to fight California's proposed billionaire tax
Entrepreneurs who take on risk want to keep control of the spoils, imagine that.

A millionaire's tax is the flip side of "privatize profits, socialize risks."

Privatize risk, socialize reward.
