CDRdude··on A Field Guide to the American Sandwich
Surely he explained the part about meat in between buns?
CDRdude··on Where Is Germany's Gold?
If I was a government, I wouldn't even want to take it back. Storing gold seems like a hassle compared to storing the equivalent value in regular currency.
CDRdude··on If you use a Mac or Android, e-commerce sites may be charging you more
It is called the ultimatum game. Edit: I originally had this mixed up with the dictator game.

CDRdude··on Study finds reduced brain volume in expert chess players
As a swarm, they forage for nectar with a pretty neat algorithm[1]. As individuals, they are capable of learning [2]. Apparently, honeybees can even learn to identify human faces. Oh, and they can also beat me at chess.

CDRdude··on Emacs 24.4 released
I'm a comparative youngin to most of the people here, and I've never tried emacs. I'd like to learn my way around it someday, but I don't know how high of a priority I should place on it. I've managed to pick up enough vim to make my life easier, would learning my way around emacs also get me a productivity boost? How good is evil mode?
CDRdude··on Finding a Video Poker Bug Made These Guys Rich
In a great many circumstances (i.e. not testifying in court), lying is not illegal. If you're lying to a casino, I don't think it's even immoral.
CDRdude··on OkCupid’s Unblushing Analyst of Attraction
The title of the post was: "Why you should never pay for online dating". This appears to be a rehosted version of it:

CDRdude··on Using a Tactic Unseen in a Century, Countries Cordon Off Ebola-Racked Areas
Some people there don't even believe that Ebola is real.
CDRdude··on “Learning to Read” excerpt from The Autobiography of Malcolm X
Not necessarily. Getting enough sleep is incredibly important.
CDRdude··on Blocking people on Twitter now just mutes them
I'm not familiar enough with Twitter, apparently. Why is having fake followers bad?
CDRdude··on In Silicon Valley, Partying Like It’s 1999 Again
That would mean that the New York times has predicted a new tech bubble 8 times, and will be correct 2 times if this is a new bubble.
CDRdude··on Larry Ellison blows off Oracle OpenWorld crowd to watch America’s Cup
I believe the TV announcers said that this is now the longest running America's Cup since 1899.
CDRdude··on Artillery is building a hardcore RTS with HTML5 and WebGL
I'm not convinced that web-based is automatically doomed among the hardcore. I think that Quake Live the most popular game in it's subgenre (Arena FPS), and it's still hanging on as an esport, with a slot in Dreamhack as well as weekly tournaments. Granted, Quake Live has the massive advantage of being a resurrected version of Quake 3 Arena--but it does make a precedent in people's minds of a hardcore web-based game.
CDRdude··on Your Thoughts Can Release Abilities Beyond Normal Limits
What mental exercises do you find effective at improving memorization, and what would you recommend to a beginner?
CDRdude··on The Web’s longest nightmare ends: Eolas patents are dead on appeal
What, exactly, is cowardly about him? If anything, he seems like a bold piece of shit rather than a cowardly one.
CDRdude··on Do web designers actually use the internet?
I must agree with you. I browse the web on my phone a lot, and the only website where I want to use the mobile version is wikipedia. And even then, I need to switch back to the desktop view at times.
CDRdude··on Use a Software Bug to Win Video Poker? That’s a Federal Hacking Case
I believe that the philosophical divide in the speedrunning community is actually between tool-assisted speedruns[1], and unassisted speedruns.

CDRdude··on Why does this png display differently in Chrome/Firefox than in Safari/IE?
Using Firefox, I see a very grainy Tux, and a faded GNU logo in the background. When I take a screenshot of it using Firefox, and view the screenshot in Chrome, I see the grainy Tux/faded GNU logo, identical to my viewing of it in Firefox. Is this how it's supposed to work?

I apologize if this is a dumb question.

CDRdude··on Entire cities dead on some World of Warcraft realms
EVE is a MMORPG, where people fly around a galaxy (this one: http://go-dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Verite/influence.png ), in spaceships. Unlike WoW, there are no player classes (warrior, shaman, mage, etc), there are just different spaceships you can fly. You can't jump into any spaceship you want right off the bat though, you have to spend skill points in order to have the skill "Pilot spaceships of type X". Also, some are horrifically expensive, and can take up to two weeks of real-world time to construct. If your spaceship dies, you have to buy a new one. A rule of thumb is never fly what you can't afford to lose.

Unlike WoW, there are no raids and bosss. There are NPC spaceships that you can kill for loot, but that sort of thing is small potatoes--there's no equivalent to a 40 man raid grouping up for a boss fight to get good loot. EVE has no stated goal, there's no endgame, except for what you make of it. Also, the mechanics of EVE let player created alliances control territory, in the form of star systems. Right now, I understand that Reddit and SomethingAwful are the two giants in the galaxy (Test Alliance Please Ignore, and Goonswarm Federation in the map I linked above). There's also a bit of the galaxy set aside for NPC space, where people are somewhat safe from other players, which is the bit in the middle of the map I linked.

Another interesting aspect of EVE is the economy, which is quite a bit more in-depth than other MMOs. Since I don't play EVE myself, I can't say much about it, but I do know that people can become fairly wealthy in-game, just by playing the market, even to the point of paying for their subscription. I'll just say that EVE is noted for it's economy, and leave it at that.

But the most notable thing about EVE is the politics. Because everyone is in the same game world (again, unlike WoW, where there are hundreds of identical Azeroths on different servers), the stage is set for conflicts on a huge scale. Also, the developers are notoriously hands-off. A spy infiltrated your alliance and stole your entire treasury? It's happened before, and it will happen again.

If you have the time, I think you should consider reading a little bit of this: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=881..., which is a snapshot of an interesting event in EVE, that I put together from various sources a few years back.

CDRdude··on Electronic Arts Sues Zynga, Says The Ville Is An “Unmistakable Copy” Of The Sims
The issue is that Zynga copied the precise RGB value. Given the large number of possible RGB values for skin, it's beyond suspicious that they wound up with the same value.
CDRdude··on Facebook Didn't Kill Digg, Reddit Did
Starting a wiki? I know that wikis spring up for recently released video games pretty frequently, although I'm not sure if anything like that happens for non-video game content.
CDRdude··on 1 in 2 new college graduates are jobless or underemployed
>I see a lot of active rejection of the ideals of hacker culture, perhaps epitomized by my generation's obsession with video games (which, incidentally, I think could be argued as more detrimental to human wellness than even the most societally hated and destructive addictive stimulants like methamphetamine or cocaine)

I'd be interested in reading this argument.

CDRdude··on This is a Bad Time to be an FPS Fan
From the perspective of a guy who loves multiplayer FPS, I think there's never been a better time to be an FPS fan. FPS games hardly ever die out entirely, and they can be played over the internet with anyone else in the world who happens to like the same FPS game. There's really a game for everyone. There's project reality and America's Army for the realistic FPS fans. For the arena, deathmatch-type games, there's Quake Live, Warsow, CPMA, and Unreal Tournament 3. For team-based games, there's Counterstrike, Team Fortress 2, and Battlefield 3. For people who like old games, you can play Doom 2, Quakeworld, and Quake 2. There are likely hundreds of FPS games that I haven't heard of, and yet have a dedicated following.
CDRdude··on The Supreme Court Should Invalidate Software Patents
Is that accurate in this case? My understanding is that the majority of the time, SCOTUS interprets the constitutionality of laws.
