CDRdude··on Heavier cars are safer for their drivers, but far deadlier for everyone else
"Drink driver" and "drink driving" seem to be the British phrases.
CDRdude··on Man arrested for promoting jury nullification wins federal case
That’s not an “instead”. What you are describing is what jury nullification is.
CDRdude··on ‘Zoe’ becomes the world’s first named heat wave
I’m being a bit snarky instead of being helpful, but your post brings this XKCD to mind: https://xkcd.com/2170/
CDRdude··on Why is Apache clinging to OpenOffice?

CDRdude··on Ask HN: Anyone else getting a 500 on their Google Calendars?
It seems to be German: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quotation_mark
CDRdude··on Trailerduck is a smart e-bike trailer
You only need both hands on the handlebars when starting from a stop. It is very easy to ride with one hand even at slow speeds, and bikes can be ridden with no hands at moderate speeds.
CDRdude··on The universe has already made almost all the stars it will ever make
That’s a good point, I hadn’t considered that.
CDRdude··on The universe has already made almost all the stars it will ever make
I don’t see this. Many people in my country are religious, and believe that God (the Christian one) has a plan for them—-the exact opposite of nihilism.
CDRdude··on Bahraini Government Hacks Activists with NSO Group Zero-Click iPhone Exploits
The Suez War, the Six-Day War, and the Yom Kippur War, I guess?
CDRdude··on Co-founder of Snopes was writing plagiarized articles under a fake name
Can you provide an example of an article that you feel has a clear political slant?
CDRdude··on Few people know that Google voluntarily removes some search results
I don’t understand. Why did this freak out a bunch of FBI agents?
CDRdude··on French set to replace English as EU’s ‘working language’
> 190cm (6'3) being a threshold for "manliness", as you say, has no bearing on actual human average sizes and might just be your personal bias showing.

Of course it has no bearing on a actual sizes! That’s why the commenter says “manliness in popular culture” and “self-reported heights”. He’s making the point that lots of men who are slightly shorter than 6 feet will lie and say they are 6 feet tall, and wondering if there is a comparable number in cm.

CDRdude··on The value of downvoting, or, how Hacker News gets it wrong (2009)
I think slashdot’s voting system was well equipped to avoid that problem, but they faded anyway. Maybe it was the redesign? I think many of their innovations in 1999 would go a long way to resolve political downvoting today—-new accounts were unable to vote on comments, you were unable to vote and comment in the same posts, metamoderation to ensure fairness, and up or downvotes having to fit categories like ‘insightful’ or ‘offtopic’.
CDRdude··on Can’t use iCloud with “true” as the last name
One point to longer passwords is passphrases. Passphrases are easier to remember than complicated passwords, and often longer. I can remember the 37 character passphrase “This passw0rd is far too long for me.” much more easily than the 20 character “W64$hmIbAZ7:-IirN57p”
CDRdude··on TabFS: Mount your Browser Tabs as a Filesystem
It seems to be compatible with tree style tabs. I'm not sure how to import, but this seems to do a reasonable job of exporting: ls | xargs -I {} paste {}/url.txt {}/title.txt
CDRdude··on Growl in Retirement
You can make an AppleScript thing and call it from bash. I think this is the sort of documentation I used at one point: https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/documentation/La...
CDRdude··on Pure sh bible – Posix sh alternatives to external processes

    > or, in the case of macOS a horribly outdated one.
The latest version of macOS defaults to zsh instead of the outdated version of bash.
CDRdude··on Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died
What do you mean, too weak a president? The president can’t push back on that—-the senate confirms justices, that’s in the constitution:

... and he shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States...

CDRdude··on U.S. Supreme Court deems half of Oklahoma a Native American reservation
Adverse possession is a specific thing in some jurisdictions where if you visibly and openly occupy a piece of land for long enough without a challenge from the original owner, it becomes your property and the original owner loses it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adverse_possession
CDRdude··on The Collapsing Leviathan
> I agree with the part about smart kids being disadvantaged by the SAT going away, but nonconformists and smart people are not the same thing.

In this context, "smart noncomformist kids" refers to the intersection of "smart kids" and "nonconformist kids". The proposition of this sentence is that college admissions officers will reject all the nonconformist kids because they can't tell which ones are smart.

CDRdude··on 'Call of Duty' wins First Amendment victory over use of Humvees

It was passed by Congress. Bush just signed the bill into law.
CDRdude··on No engineer has ever sued because of constructive post-interview feedback
> apparently 'cat error.log | grep 'ERROR:' | wc -l' is not how real programmers find error count,

Perhaps real programmers would 'grep -c 'ERROR:' error.log'. I’m not sure what kind of overhead the extra pipes use.

CDRdude··on PFAS “Forever Chemicals” and Nordic Ski Wax
I didn’t think CH waxes had fluorocarbons at all. Their LF (Low Fluoro) and HF (High Fluoro) lines certainly do.
CDRdude··on AirPods revenue does not exceed Spotify, Twitter, Snapchat, and Shopify revenue
The parent poster did specify “call battery life”. I can listen to music for hours, but a call with two-way communication drains my AirPods battery very quickly.
CDRdude··on The Plain Text Project
You can put the grep flags at the end? All these years, and I had no idea.
CDRdude··on TurboTax’s 20-Year Fight to Stop Americans from Filing Taxes for Free
The newspapers will charge you to run the ad. They have no reason to print that info for free.
CDRdude··on Cameras Could Replace Car Mirrors?
> Like with rear-view cameras, it's not uncommon in heavy snow for it to be obscured.

In heavy snow, this can also happen to mirrors and your rear window. Usually you open the driver door so you can look behind you.

CDRdude··on We tried to publish a replication of a Science paper in Science
> TL;DR: .... Science (a famous journal) refused to publish the null replication.

They refused to send the null replication out for peer review. I think that is an important difference. The optics make it look more like suppression, rather than a rejection based on quality.
