The default browser switch in Windows 10 was using multiple dark patterns to get you to stay with Edge. Good for Firefox.

When I realized I could not cleanly get a backup of my notes from OneNote, I switched to Joplin and have been quite happy since.

Does it have encryption? How does it compare to Joplin?

Most of the problems mentioned can be solved with a little bit of teaching - teach these "average users" how to get their data (email, photos, etc) backed up in a usable way and use a personal domain name as their email address, and most of these problems go away.

> just self-host your email

I have a personal domain name that I host email through Protonmail. It is super easy to set up and I do not have any delivery issues.

I'm suprised nobody has mentioned GrapheneOS: https://grapheneos.org/

> Though the federal government twice offered Korczak Ziolkowski millions of dollars to fund the memorial, he decided to rely on private donations, and retained control of the project

This article contains a lot of opining about a private memorial. If you don't like it, simply don't pay to attend it and build your own. If yours is better and more historically accurate (claims made in the article say the current has certain inaccuracies), yours will become more popular!

https://grapheneos.org ?

Thanks!

thnks!

I'm not very familiar with VIM - could someone explain what this is? Seems like some settings to make NeoVIM into a note-taking app?

How secure is it compared to ProtonMail?

Funny how these ideas are touted until there's an hot summer then all the articles talking about how this _weather_ is a _clear example_ of climate change.

This is interesting, compared to another current front-page HN post, " I Will Never Use a Microsoft Account to Log Into My Own PC" https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27659988

"January is month 1"

This is what we were all waiting for.

Same here - I remember being excited about Vista and 7. Now I just dread update announcements.

Protonmail still does not have message threading built into the mobile app. That seems like a minimum requirement in 2021, doesn't it? I don't know how that is still not in there.

Forcefully installing tracking apps onto users' phones is not the way to improve the trust of the public.

I started using Joplin and really like it.

How about Joplin? (https://joplinapp.org/)

How would the Aaron Schwartz case been affected if this decision had been made before?

Great historical background - thanks Paul!

After watching the WeWork documentary you would not expect this.

I've been looking for something like this. Has anyone used it who can give any real-world feedback?

This is what I have been doing! I might think twice now.
