ByersReason··on Ask HN: Did Anyone Else Here Simply Not Do Well at School?
I teach part time at the university level (I am not going to say where).

I would love to give you my perspective on this as I see a lot of non-neurotypical students. Some of these students do well in an academic environment; some don't - and to generalize this across schools; some schools have a more regularized population and select for this. Similarly, others accommodate more for these types of things versus schools that do less.

Additionally, it is well recognized that academic success is not necessarily an indicator of how well people "do in life". What academic success is, however, is a door opener for other opportunities. There are other door openers, like being a really good coder.

What you need to do is to figure out what your "superpower" is. It might be coding; it might be math, or something like being able to relate longitudinally to a task over a long period.

Everyone has a superpower, it's just some people are not aware of what it is. Go at figuring that out, and don't let people tell you something about yourself that you do not believe. My sister puts this another, simpler, way "Don't let the turkeys get you down".

Good luck!

ByersReason··on Stock market charts you never saw (2021)
however, given that your 1923 dollars were likely silver dollars which currently trade for $32 (for junk grade) and up ... I made that 8m * 32 = 256m :) - and better if you were sensible and stored un-circulated dollars
ByersReason··on Vectis IP Announces Call for Patents Essential to the Opus codec
If I as a small company actually decided to sue a large company, I think that the response would be "hang on, here are 20 of our patents you are infringing on - you actually owe us money". Larger companies treat patents like trading cards, sadly.
ByersReason··on Ask HN: How would you spatialize higher dimensional data?
https://arxiv.org/abs/1806.09823 - you can use this to find nearest neighbors to reduce the number of elements you are considering (or maybe not). Then you need: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimensionality_reduction
ByersReason··on Ask HN: Whatever happened to dedicated sound cards?
Usually the software using the interface (pro tools / ableton) has settings to tweak audio latency via buffer size for audio. I have not had issue with this or midi, and I record a fair amount. Motu makes a good cheap audio usb-c interface.
ByersReason··on Ask HN: Anyone having issues with job applicant fraud?
It seems based on the two times I saw it that it is mostly delusion. The idea appears to be that you can learn to do something complex on the job with a slight amount of experience and a lookup site, like stackoverflow or rose. I assume this would be sufficient if you assume really non-technical management, incapable of gauging progress.
ByersReason··on Ask HN: Anyone having issues with job applicant fraud?
Yes, I had a candidate turn up for a physical interview who clearly was not the person on the phone screen.
ByersReason··on Europe Is Getting Serious About Making Space-Based Solar Power a Reality
Can someone explain to me why it makes more sense to put large, complex pieces of equipment in space where maintaining it is costly, and then beam power though the atmosphere, as opposed to putting simple, easily maintainable tech on the ground, with the input radiation already having traverse the atmosphere? Is there such an advantage power wise that this is worth doing?

ByersReason··on The Calvine UFO photograph
Sorry, I want to believe ;) but it is a complete hoax. Read this: https://www.amazon.com/Round-Circles-Poltergeists-Pranksters... I do have enormous respect for the art though.
ByersReason··on High property taxes are good
Property values for tax calculation purposes are not reassessed round here so you pay on whatever the assessed value was when your bought the property. Sounds nice, but what actually happens is that baby boomers, who bought their houses ages ago, pay essentially no tax on houses. Meanwhile, more recent residents get to foot the bill with sky high property taxes. I know people with previously purchased houses of the order or 5 (yes 5) houses that they are renting out for outrageous rents - all with very low property taxes on them. Please make the normal tax rate lower and actually tax everyone.

ByersReason··on As US Road Deaths Rise, France Is Safer Than Ever. Why?
Either nature or nurture, french drivers and amazingly polite and pleasant to share the road with, certainly in comparison to the bay area, in my experience (Provence).
ByersReason··on Ask HN: What should I do and not do when starting my first full time job?
Be nice. And helpful. Generally when someone asks you for help on something, or when you are assigned to a project, that means they need help! Take the time to understand how it works, reason correctly about what needs to get done, be self-starting, and get the stuff done. Clearly communicate with others in your team and don't be afraid to use your supervisor to resolve problems that keep moving things forward. Be the guy that can get given something and sort it out - or start something new. Any work environment is very different from school - much to learn about the way things work.
ByersReason··on An engineered barley plant that ‘orders’ soil bacteria to manufacture fertiliser
Totally happens even with insects. The biotech industry started using BT genes (a fungus which takes care of corn ear worm) in GMO corn. Previously, BT was an organically approved pesticide, carefully applied by growers according to guidelines which made sure the target pest did not develop resistance. But with the genes making the nasties continually = BT all the time = excellent evolutionary driver = cases of resistant corn ear worm appearing. ByersReason··on Home Buying Is Becoming ‘Unaffordable for Most Americans’
Quite right. And also I know multiple people from the (now) older generation who are sitting on large amounts of property and renting it out for correspondingly huge amounts of income. Once into one property .. it was possible for a person to essentially chain from one mortgage to another (using the proceeds from the previous rental as collateral). The person in question now owns 5 houses -all accomplished bootstrapped on a school salary, starting in the early 70's. Utterly impossible now IMO, unless you win at the tech work lottery :) - it is of course impressively entrepreneurial, but also she wonders why her daughter has not settled down and purchased a house ..

ByersReason··on Finally We May Have a Path to the Fundamental Theory of Physics
well at first blush, looks like he re-invented graph rewriting. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graph_rewriting - on cursory examination, he did not seem to mention that what he was doing with term rewriting was in any way equivalent to this very well known material at all. Maybe I missed this .. also, it is known that you can define some turning equivalence properties to such graph representations, for example : https://arxiv.org/abs/1703.09406 - so therefore you could also assume that this model can compute any computable function. And so, hence, it would seem valid to assume that a physics model can run on such a substrate.
ByersReason··on Phenethylamines I Have Known and Loved (1991)
Very sound advise. I know a number of people who regularly took psychedelics/smoked a ton of weed in the 90's and who could now be regarded as casualties. Maybe some form of psychosis would have happened to these people anyway, but IMO psychedelics is not a "one size fits all" type thing. Many people do clearly get something out of taking psychedelics, but other people with genetics tending on the psychotic end of the spectrum clearly should not, in my opinion. Also I think we have survivor bias in many of these conversations on HN - in that people who are in a bad place are not positing on hacker news. Those people are surviving and trying to get their shit together.
ByersReason··on Our soil is dying! - We and our governments need to act!
Vananda Shiva IS an ecofeminist. I think it highly relevant. Clearly all people are capable of being activists. But in this case, she happens to make an explicit point of her movement being woman led. This is especially relevant in the cultural context of her movement in India.
ByersReason··on Our soil is dying! - We and our governments need to act!
YMMV on Sadhguru. Some people think it a cult like organization: https://www.quora.com/Is-Sadhguru-a-cult-leader

If you want some genuine, grassroots, woman led, action in this area, Vananda Shiva is very well respected: https://humansandnature.org/vandana-shiva/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vandana_Shiva

ByersReason··on Ask HN: Does anyone else question USB-C as an “improvement”?
Well, yes. Fully at questioning stage. Ports on back of two winX laptops (as opposed to the side) - seems to run USB-C to display adapter just fine. But plug and actual USB cable into it - results vary. Ports on the side - run USB things just fine ... Am I right in thinking the operation of the usb port got overloaded - in that usbCPort != otherUSBCPort - bleugh.
ByersReason··on Ethernet's Emergence from Xerox PARC
The question has to be asked - was the last time you copied a paper document (as opposed to printing one out - and maybe not even that :) )? Even the fed-ex kinkos (as major user of such machines) are closing down because people don't promote things with paper anymore. PARC has for years been trying hard to get Xerox to the right place with this - there are many things Xerox should do based on PARC work, like hybrid/functional object printing (which actually uses the mechanical service industry type infrastucture they have setup already). And Xerox is moving in the direction of services around servicing (CareAR, etc). Now the former head of PARC (Steve Hoover) is CTO of Xerox, there is a possibility they might actually do something.
ByersReason··on Hyper-realistic digital humans in Unity
It's been my opinion for a while that the $150/mo seat fee, from not all of their users, isn't covering their burn rate, and that they are loosing market share in money marking projects to Unreal. Ideally they would like proper percentages, but since they lack a compelling advantage, they must price lower relative to Unreal. Feel free to prove me wrong with actual numbers (but: 1800 employees in SF ...) @ av, 200k/employee, I make that 360m/yr just on salary :) So, anyhow, I completely agree with this post. And, looking for cashflow and better rendering tech, they buy Weta .... maybe they will pull this off .. but maybe not, also.
