Brusco_RF··on Suit alleges recreation.gov cluttered with junk fees, seeks millions in refunds
Right but if you charge a fee to cancel then you've just made the no-show problem worse. Who would voluntarily pay fee when you can just do... nothing?
Brusco_RF··on Ask HN: Where have you found community outside of work?
Phoenix? Because I have been living in southern Arizona for 5 years now and have also found this frustrating.

> 11m is a terrifyingly short time, even if this was all correct

Is it? How much warning do you get when a car brakes in front of you on the highway?

In 11m you could write a report on how to avoid the collision prior to actually performing the maneuver

It happens before entering the workforce too. I can't tell you how many of my classmates left the EE department for the business school riiiight around the time when circuit parameters went from being scalars to vectors
Brusco_RF··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
I do not! It was years ago. And unfortunately there is no tracking of ads, I wanted a link to that video too. You can't even back up and re-watch an ad!
Brusco_RF··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
There are tons of Youtube competitors that you can use right now. You're not though, because Youtube is better.
Brusco_RF··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
So in essence, someone else should pay. Just not me. Real solid plan
Brusco_RF··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
I just watch from the Brave browser, built in ad-blocker
Brusco_RF··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
Not entirely. I sat through a 12 minute ad once. We could have skipped it after 5 seconds. But it was a charming video of a lady cooking a hamburger and I rather enjoyed watching it. I wish more ads were like that
Brusco_RF··on Students can’t get off their phones. Schools have had enough
USDOT says 1.34 deaths per 100,000,000 miles driven. Assuming 32mph average speed[1] that's 1 death per 2,332,089 hours driven.

There were 40 students killed in school shootings in 2022 [2]. Assuming 50M students and 2K hours/year in school that equates to 1 death per 2,500,000,000 hours spent in the classroom.

The difference is a factor of 1,072 meaning that if you drive with your kid for 2 hours, you have exposed them to a higher risk of dying in a traffic accident than an entire year of risk from school shootings.

Definitely a stat I'll keep in my back pocket.

Brusco_RF··on Health advisory on social media use in adolescence
Your solution is to burn down the entire public school system and re-build it from scratch - that's a non-starter.

I also don't even think it would work in principle. You're talking about combining the older age groups with the younger, that's a recipe for bullying.

Brusco_RF··on Health advisory on social media use in adolescence
Can you name some of those levers? Because I tend to think that bullying is as old as our species is
Brusco_RF··on Students can’t get off their phones. Schools have had enough
I upvoted, because the discussion underneath has been illuminating and I think more people need to see it.

And I feel like cars should never crash and there should be no wars famines or tsunamis.

We live in the real world, plan accordingly. Your feelings about it don't matter.

Brusco_RF··on Students can’t get off their phones. Schools have had enough
I'm a parent, and no that's not true at all. How would that even help?
Brusco_RF··on Health advisory on social media use in adolescence
> For reclusive or socially anxious individuals it may even be the majority of interaction.

Chicken? or egg?

Brusco_RF··on Health advisory on social media use in adolescence
You don't need to go to the extreme in either direction. Everything is fine in moderation. Kids are terrible at moderating (adults aren't great either), so use the screen time limits that Apple gives you.
Brusco_RF··on Health advisory on social media use in adolescence
An interesting nuance, but I don't think this should be used to dismiss the mental health effects of social media. Social media affects virtually ALL adolescents, while those other factors listed only affect some. Only a subset of adolescents lack family support or are bullied. The third factor, dissatisfaction with schoolwork, would be extremely hard to discern as a cause or effect of depression
Brusco_RF··on How Does an FPGA Work?
Its roughly a function of driving frequency. If you're emulating a classic video game system you are in the low MHz and your power consumption is low.

More capable FPGA's like what I work with run in the hundreds of MHz and that's when you can draw 100W on a single chip

Brusco_RF··on Rate The Landlord: Anonymously share information with tenants like you
Curious about this, does the same hold in Arizona? I had a landlord steal my security deposit plus send me to collections for almost $2K for what they said were scratches on the flooring... which was vinyl... the picture they sent as proof would get absolutely laughed out of court I am sure[1]

No, its not. This blog post reads like a smear piece. Complete with a leading picture of a dead bobcat that was obviously killed by a car and not a rocket

Brusco_RF··on Nuclear Power Is the Answer to Global and Environmental Energy Woes
I heard the other day that many Saudi's leave their AC running when they leave SA for the summer months. Power is THAT cheap.
Brusco_RF··on Nuclear Power Is the Answer to Global and Environmental Energy Woes
This is why we look at the actual amount of carbon released, not just a binary yes/no. I mean even if you had a magic power source that did not emit one single molecule of C02, a FUD spreader like you could use that exact same argument the first time a worker sparks a cigarette.

So tell me, how much C02 does mining uranium emit as compared to a coal station on a kg/Watt basis? six orders of magnitude less? seven?

Brusco_RF··on Nuclear Power Is the Answer to Global and Environmental Energy Woes
Reminds me of the hysteria surrounding microplastics. I saw an article that once that said there are X many thousands of microplastic particles in a cubic meter of seawater at certain locations. They were actually counting individual particles! Why? because expressing plastics as a % of total mass or volume makes it so negligible as to not be a headline.
Brusco_RF··on Ask HN: People who were laid off or quit recently, how are you doing?
To counter some of the doom in this thread:

I was laid off this year (it was a tiny business that lost it's only client, so not exactly something in my control). I was doing schematic capture, board design, and RF testing.

I was hired two weeks later by another company for something I've only been doing for ~1.5 years: FPGA design. At a 30% higher salary!

Brusco_RF··on Ask HN: People who were laid off or quit recently, how are you doing?
This is fantastic advice. One thing I worry about as someone who has switched lanes in their career is not building that network. I found my current job through cold approaches. I SHOULD find my next job through my personal network, but I don't event want to be in the same city so who knows
Brusco_RF··on Why some researchers think I’m wrong about social media and mental illness
Is there a shortage of Nestle competitors ? The fact that people still buy Nestle tells you how much the masses actually care about Nestle's behavior, in dollar terms. ie, less than the savings that Nestle presents.

Using legislation "with teeth" to force something that the masses don't want is autocracy, not democracy.
