The opposite. Participating benefits your career.

Curious what you think about this: Say there's no company sponsorship or involvement. You get invited to happy hour or a round of golf with the higher-ups completely on your own dime. Its obviously beneficial to pal around with your superiors. Is that a problem?

I'm glad you just came right out and said you're anti-human, most people beat around that particular landmine of a bush.

Because it's voluntary and they're buying your food/drinks?
Brusco_RF··on At this company, we are family
I've always had these events outside work hours. We get paid to work. After work, the company is buying us drinks but not paying us to drink them. Where's the problem?

It is not a "fact" that climate change will cause our extinction. Point me to one serious report that says that. Your nonstop doomerism has half the kids believing that absolute lie.

I'm just making a general point, I obviously know nothing about your specific situation

Yeah, you're too deep in it.

The natural rate of wildfire is about 5x higher than current levels, despite what breathless journalists will push. Check out this chart [1] before modern forest "management" kicked in.

Modern conflagrations are a result of decades of snuffing out small fires.

Also, I live in Arizona and I'm pretty sick of people telling me it's getting hotter. Its not. Our record temperature was set in 1990 [2]. The news claims that every year is "record breaking" by using a different metric every time. Last year it was "number of days over X degrees" this year it's "Average nightime lows" which is more affected by the growing urban heat-island effect than climate change, but I digress.

It's exceptionally relevant. Excuse my French, but this constant doomerism is really fucking up the kids.

>"More than half of the 16- to 25-year-olds in the Lancet survey said they believe humanity is doomed. And close to 40 percent said that fears about the future have made them reluctant to have children of their own." [1]

We gave an entire generation anxiety and depression, and it's going to wreak havoc on the fertility rate in a decade or so.

Look I'm not saying you need to stay out drinking until 10pm but team-building is important to any job, especially if you're a leader, and much of that team cohesiveness happens outside of work hours.

It's not too surprising if skipping all team-building events results in... not being a part of the team

Please go ahead and make it at home. Like many others, I want this to be true badly but my BS detectors are blaring

I don't think company-sponsored social events are designed to exclude non-social types, they're just for the benefit of social employees.

Of course, this is coming from someone who really enjoys drinking on the company dime

Satire?
Brusco_RF··on Have attention spans been declining?
Thank you. I'm going to pass on this one
Brusco_RF··on Have attention spans been declining?
Recognize that your most focused mindstate is first thing in the morning. Do tasks that require the longest attention span right then. Don't turn your phone on until they're done.

Generally don't keep your phone in your pocket, put it in another room on silent. Disable lockscreen notifications for all apps but the essentials. Do the same to your computer. No screen time 2 hours before bed.

Do long cardio workouts outside.

Recognize that it's OK to be bored, you don't need to fill every gap by looking at your phone. It's OK just to let your mind wander around.

Brusco_RF··on Have attention spans been declining?
I think the spirit of the above comment questions whether it's even worth reversing
Brusco_RF··on Have attention spans been declining?
I appreciate your optimism. A lot of people point out that education hasn't changed meaningfully in hundreds of years. Professors, long lectures, textbook readings, homework and exams. I am curious if this trend will be the catalyst for a new education systems to topple current status quo.

You're right: the sum total of human knowledge is larger than it has ever been so to reach the boundaries of our understanding requires more learning than ever. Compressing that learning process therefore seems necessary to continue our upward trajectory.

I'm both excited and terrified to see what a "TikTok-ified" engineering curriculum would look like.

Brusco_RF··on Have attention spans been declining?
Thanks for mentioning that book. I am trying to decide if it's worth reading. The negative reviews agree with the main premise of the book but say it's short and superficial. Is there information in there worth reading beyond the usual tips ie keeping your phone in another room, avoid news first thing in the morning, no screen time 2 hours before bed, long cardio workouts, etc?

I am confused. Are you arguing that this is a thing that happens? If so, I'd like to see any shred of evidence whatsoever.

On the other hand, we know that governments do this sort of thing all the time.

I also have ADHD. That doesn't mean we're not in control of our lives. I'd suggest you don't let your ailments define you.

I am somewhat mind-blown by that government waste adage. While I supposed that in some technical sense it could be true, I would like to have a blunt conversation with anyone who believes government waste is anywhere near parity with the costs of trying to eliminate government waste
Brusco_RF··on Stanford president resigns over manipulated research, will retract 3 papers
I think that is reasonable. The alternative is that all 80,000 Meta employees have their professional reputations tarnished by something that happened a decade ago that they probably had nothing to do with

Brusco_RF··on Children of alumni no longer have admissions edge at Carnegie Mellon, Pitt
I'd start by removing the subsidies and special rules around student loans. That makes colleges compete on price again which puts downward pressure on tuition.

You're putting a lot of words in my mouth and I don't believe you're arguing in good faith.

I never said it was easy, and I never even said you can get out of it at all. I simply said you're better off believing one thing over another.

>that's not going to stop the very powerful dopamine-seeking urge of the brain

This is our fundamental disagreement. Plenty of people have their urges under control. Believing you are somehow "different" or your brain is "broken" is the ultimate toxic mindset. You can't fix your life until you fix your mind

Name a better way.

Woah, pump the brakes there. I never passed a moral judgement. I never called anyone inferior. Believe me, I have plenty of vices.

Question. The addict you mentioned. Do you believe they more or less likely to recover if they believe they have agency rather than believing "informed choice is an illusion" as the other commenter so eloquently put it?

The question is rhetorical. The answer is obvious.
