BrandonMarc··on Pirate Bay founder thinks Parler’s inability to stay online is 'embarrassing'
Indeed. Greenwald helped Snowden; he has the chops to see what's going on. To wit, his subsequent tweet:

Glenn Greenwald @ggreenwald Jan 11

Do you know how many of the people arrested in connection with the Capitol invasion were active users of Parler?

Zero.

The planning was largely done on Facebook. This is all a bullshit pretext for silencing competitors on ideological grounds: just the start.

BrandonMarc··on Pirate Bay founder thinks Parler’s inability to stay online is 'embarrassing'
If you were to scape someone's private messages from Facebook - or their private posts - and then post them online en masse ... that may or may not be illegal in Europe, but it ain't ethically white. Grey at best.
BrandonMarc··on State-backed manipulation rampant on social media
... and the social media giants have lots of money, and are in the perfect position to manipulate.

Motivation and opportunity ...

BrandonMarc··on The Guy I Almost Was (1998)
I'm wondering if success has ever not come through hardship. It certainly came through hardship in the past. Today seems little different.

Note: 80% of millionaires are first-generation rich - they started off with little, and made their own fortune.

BrandonMarc··on The Guy I Almost Was (1998)
> Almost half of Americans live in the 100 largest MSAs.

Meaning just over half live in the rest, with far lower cost of living.

BrandonMarc··on Can developer productivity be measured?
Put differently, 80% of his time gave his brain training and practice which likely improved the 20% that made it to market.

Also consider, frustrating though I'm sure that was, he probably still got paid for his effort in the 80%.

BrandonMarc··on Can developer productivity be measured?
He mentions increasing salary won't lead to increased productivity ... and that's true, if the same developer remains. But what if we remove that constraint? What if increased salary means a higher quality of developer takes the position? Wouldn't this mean higher productivity?

Bit of a cold scenario, but one way to game it out is hypothetically removing the current dev and then hiring someone better at double the pay.

Or, less unfair seeming, double the pay by hiring a second dev. That might not double productivity ... depending on the situation it might 1.5x it, or just as easily 4x it.

BrandonMarc··on YouTube to remove content that alleges widespread election fraud
... and Facebook's recommendation would be based on their prior activity. If their interests on Facebook (what they like, follow, etc) were mostly cat videos, Facebook wouldn't be recommending extremist groups.

In the meantime, there's a heck of a gulf between whether or not Facebook lets a group be recommended, and actively censoring content dissenting to the chosen narrative.

BrandonMarc··on Weather Service faces bandwidth shortage, proposes limiting key data
"key data" .... which would be a small subset of all data ... and to solve bandwidth issues they want to make it more scarce.

This is a stunt. They want money, and are using their most popular (key) data points as a threat.

Just like politicians. Money gets tight and they say they'll cut essential services like fire and police, but what they won't tell you is they really want their pet project funded, using deceit.

BrandonMarc··on My experience as a poll worker in Pennsylvania
# 1 would fit, if there were a proportionate number of mail-in ballots for Jo Jorgensen and Kanye West. If you have 10,000 ballots, some of those will be expected. Tens of thousands of Biden-only? Repeatedly? Doesn't pass the sniff test.
BrandonMarc··on My experience as a poll worker in Pennsylvania
Probably, eh? Well then sure, let's have election workers make judgment calls based on "probably".
BrandonMarc··on My experience as a poll worker in Pennsylvania
Wait, a dog whistle? For what? Fellow soldiers that have dog tags?
BrandonMarc··on My experience as a poll worker in Pennsylvania
The NY state response included sending sick patients into nursing homes. Had other states done that uniformly we'd have even more deaths, not fewer.

BrandonMarc··on Ongoing edit war over the Wikipedia article for Benford's Law
Benford's law relates to a method for finding manipulation of data, such as election results. More on that here:

BrandonMarc··on The 'brushing' scam that's behind mystery parcels
If I understand the scam correctly, the hypothetical seller "Kleinman candles" is the one performing the scam, in order to create fake reviews. Unless the purpose of the scam is to make the reviewer themself seem more credible.

I just have to wonder ... money has to change hands. Isn't there a cost to doing this, large enough to make it somewhat prohibitive? Even for really cheap items?

BrandonMarc··on A Superspreading Event: The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and Covid-19 [pdf]
Good point. I see a spike in cases in mid-to-late June. Now ... what happened in early June that might lead to a spike in cases. Involving large crowds of very random people congregating together, perhaps shouting. Hmm. Well ...
BrandonMarc··on A Superspreading Event: The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and Covid-19 [pdf]
Very relevant point. We can't trust the science if the science isn't allowed to see certain things.
BrandonMarc··on A Superspreading Event: The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and Covid-19 [pdf]
I saw lots of protest images in June, and July, and lately, featuring very few people with masks.
BrandonMarc··on A Superspreading Event: The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and Covid-19 [pdf]
Should concerns over Sturgis also be too narrowly conceived, then?

BrandonMarc··on Britain to give millions of HKers a path to citizenship
Thank you for bringing up Kent State. That event is taught in history classes all over the country as an example of something we did wrong, and desperately want to never repeat.

Contrast this with Tiananmen Square: Beijing does everything it can to prevent its citizens knowing about it, and is all to happy to cultivate a reputation that they would gladly do it again today.

Really good example. Thank you.

BrandonMarc··on Google bans ZeroHedge and The Federalist from its ad platform
Sounds like bullying to me.

Giant entrenched mainstream entity teams up with nonprofit to financially take out a competitor. For the purpose of removing diversity from public discourse.

Doesn't sound so high minded when you put it that way.
