Thanks to a helpful comment, I discovered after 10 years that

> i can't believe i'm writing a reply to a guy whose name is broken spanish for 'brando, the little fuck'. (literally. there isn't an alternative interpretation.)

Cool, I had no idea.

I love the summary done by https://hn-wrapped.kadoa.com/BrandoElFollito?share

Roast Claims to be French but hasn't mentioned surrendering once - suspicious! Has a PhD in physics but still can't figure out why YAML indentation is important Watches hoof trimming videos despite seeing a real cow only twice - peak urban programmer moment

(the mention about France was mean, though)

Because we have the greatest lighthouses. A lot of people, great people told us we have them. It is true.
BrandoElFollito··on Delta WiFi Survival Guide
I despise wifi in planes on long hauls. With the improvement of the reliability, there are now people yelling their super important corporate call across the whole cabin.

On a recent flight I had to tell a guy in a seat nearby to stop yelling. He was obnoxious so I asked his neighbor to switch seats for a moment so that I can participate in that call as well. He stopped.

I always wish wifi was down.

I had a company card in the name of the company. The company was reimbursing it. I was supposed to file expense claims and they should match the reimbursement.

I had very high spendings so it would have been easy to smuggle something. I never did that because it is simply stealing.

I now have a company card at my name. The company bears the cost and it has an extended reimbursement time. I have to reimburse it so it is in my interest to file expense claims quickly. But I could use it for anything.

BrandoElFollito··on Security through obscurity is dead, and AI delivered the fatal blow
This is what annoys me most when people talk down security by obscurity. Sometimes it is not even security, but logs sanity. I usually ask them if they prefer to have more or less useless logs. Still waiting for someone to want more (except researchers)

Security in depth is made of (ideally independent) layers. Obscuring things is one such layer.

You can add a camera pointing to the display and analyze the image. You would have a perfect galvanic separation for reasons.
BrandoElFollito··on Reverse engineering my e-scooter and rewriting the firmware in Rust
First of all, this is impressive.

I do not know how what the legal context is in your country, but you may need to have a device that uses public roads licensed to do so. In case of any legal issues (accidents, mostly) not only you would not be covered by your insurance, but your situation may worsen for having operated it. Something to keep in mind.

BrandoElFollito··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
SSR (Server Side Rendering) provides the browser with a page that is created on the server (and possibly enhanced/hydrated on the client).

Having a separate backed and frontend allows for separation of duties: the client is responsible for the user-facing content and the backend deals exclusively with data flows. This allows to have several independent clients, machine to machine connections etc.

Whatever arrives to the server is untrusted, and the API (or other interfaces) only verify raw data (a JSON for instance) and there are excellent (backend) frameworks for that.

Mixing the visual content with the data is possible (Django does that for instance) but from a security perspective less efficient (again - separation of duties). It also requires to possible double the work to have an independent API.

In other words, if you separate the two you do not care about security on the front at all, and the one who builds the back can focus on their expertise.

BrandoElFollito··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
From a security perspective I greatly prefer a client-server approach: you have an unsafe frontend where you care about ergonomy and aesthetics, and a backend which provides an API which handles the security.

I doubt they are doing this in the EU. One GDPR request and they would be in a lot of trouble.
BrandoElFollito··on Making Teenagers Read Newspapers. A Nationwide Experiment in French High Schools
Since I cannot find any mention of this in the French press and after asking a few friends who have children in high school (hopefully this is lycée, a tad too late to push people to reding) -- it is very likely not a nationwide experiment at all
BrandoElFollito··on Making Teenagers Read Newspapers. A Nationwide Experiment in French High Schools
A friend of mine briefly managed a "celebrities and ovni" kind of newspaper. His first decision was to distribute papers to generic people asking them to highlight the words they did not understand. He then proceeded to having these words added to the spellcheckers so that they are flagged as incorrect.

His time was a nice success for the newspaper and a sad addition to the average stupidity of the world.

BrandoElFollito··on The death of San Francisco's Market Street
I am French. When working for a large US company, I visited SF several times between 1998 and 2008. It was usually great, especially in the earlier years.

Then I went to visit with my kids in 2019. Oh man, what a change. The city felt really, really different. Even the guy who was giving us a tour had some nostalgia in his voice.

I won't be back soon.

I guess you are talking about that guy? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_Omar_case

If so this was an action coordinated between the US and Italy, and he was not Italian either.

Does not work for France, it's a pity. I guess that all of EU will be out too as we have similar systems

Sorry, what I meant is that they are Italians and as much as the US would like to exercise extraterritoriality, they are safe in Italy

In the EU you do not need to leave to renew your visa. I don't know how common it is elsewhere.

While they are not directly in trouble, this is yet one more reason to have a sovereign financial system in Europe. Especially a direct competitor for the credit card networks (VISA, Mastercard) and SWIFT. These are the immediate threats.
BrandoElFollito··on France reaches 94.9% fiber coverage in 2026
A friend of mine has family in the middle of nowhere. Actually in the nowhere of the middle of nowhere. Beautiful place but you better not forget to buy the salt.

When I was calling him, he had to climb a tree to get basic voice reception. Data was absent.

And then one day fiber came, together with a nano emitter for GSM. His family life changed considerably. This is real progress.

Zero. We pay out taxes in Euros.

> very small percentage of elite people

Except when these "elite" people are inhabitants of a lost hole in the middle of the Creuse and suddenly all children can access Internet in a civilized way. The same way the true elites in Paris have done for some time already.

Thank you for the term I was missing. What are the "more extreme" elements?

For a French, Spanish is not a particularly easy language. Italian is much closer to French, and easier to learn.
BrandoElFollito··on France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls
We already had a system in France which is phased out. The difference is that that previous system was opt-in, and now it i the duty of the telemarketers to get authorization.

The problem is that many of the calls come from abroad (and most will move there), so there is no easy way to enforce this requirement. It is only if someone files a complaint ... and the authorities track the number abroad ... and match it to a French provider ... that it will work.

Anyway it is better than nothing.

I stopped to reply to calls that I do not have in my contacts. If it is important someone will leave a message or send an SMS/WhatsApp

BrandoElFollito··on Taxi drivers rarely die of Alzheimer's
There is (or at least - was) a similar test for Paris taxi drivers. They needed among others to explain turn by turn the drive between two places indicated by the examiner.

Today this knowledge is arguably less useful.
