Brakenshire··on UK High School top grades reach record high – with 44.8% getting A+ or A grades
Last year they took teacher assessments to rank students inside schools, and then mapped those ranks onto previous grades from the same school. So if previously only one person in the school got the top grade, last year only the top ranked student by teacher assessment could have got that grade, no matter how good the other students were. They’ve managed another shambles this year, by swinging to an opposite failing. The Education Secretary doesn’t seem very bright.
Brakenshire··on Is Britain becoming more meritocratic than America?
That’s interesting, but it only applies to the Crown Estate organisation particular to the UK, so only 0.06 billion acres. The other organisations linked to the Crown are separate legal bodies with other rules (and often just equivalent to the national government).
Brakenshire··on Is Britain becoming more meritocratic than America?
There are 36 billion acres of land on the planet, there is no way the Queen owns 1/6th of it.

The quality of the Tube and the bus system is dependent on rich and poor people using it though, it doesn’t happen in a vacuum.
Brakenshire··on Firefox Lost Almost 50M Users: Here’s Why It Is Concerning
Mozilla needs to be run by engineers, and its funding needs to directed into making Firefox better than the competition, otherwise it will die.

If LPDDR is faster won’t desktops and gaming laptops also want it?

One possible other compromise could be soldered LPDDR RAM, but with a DIMM expansion slot for DDR as well. I wonder whether the DDR could be switched off and the baseline power draw eliminated if the RAM usage was below needing it.

I actually thought the Question Time after the riots was the only time I’d ever seen that programme produce a useful debate.

It’s in the nature of the BBC that you’re not going to get opinionated independent research on issues which are political, they report directly relevant factual information, and then they report when someone else does follow up research, for instance this film produced by BBC Newsnight and the Guardian, based on research by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation:

Brakenshire··on Solar is dirt-cheap and about to get even more powerful
It makes sense for solar as well because it produces a peak at noon but not much in the early evening when a.c. demand is still very high.
Brakenshire··on Solar is dirt-cheap and about to get even more powerful
For rooftop you’re not paying for the solar, you’re paying for the scaffolding, design and fitting for your particular roof, retrofitted electric work, marketing, permits etc.

I don’t think they put any emphasis on tablet or 2-in-1 support, so might not be a good choice for this person.

I think it’s an excellent choice for a standard desktop or laptop.

“Important to note that nothing Wikileaks has published has ever had to be retracted. They've told the truth to the public about governments“

That isn’t true for their social media:

That test is basically just memorising a leaflet of facts and figures. It’s not to be taken seriously one way or the other.
Brakenshire··on Why electric cars will take over sooner than you think
A lot of petrol cars have a 200-300 mile range already when you use real-world mpg figures, and no-one even mentions it. Ordinary electric cars can do 30 minutes charging every 3 hours of driving, the cutting edge can do 20 minutes charging every 4 hours, and both figures will be markedly improved by the end of the decade.
Brakenshire··on Why electric cars will take over sooner than you think
It would be 5-10 miles parked outside for the day, not just while you were shopping.
Brakenshire··on Why electric cars will take over sooner than you think
I don't think for most people the idea of plugging in and stopping for 20 minutes rather than 10 minutes is a big deal. And most people only do journeys like that a few times a year, if that.

One limitation is whether the charging stations are available where they'd otherwise want to stop.

The grid is also built on the assumption that maybe one in five ovens are likely to be turned on at the same time, that doesn’t mean each oven can only be used at one fifth power.
Brakenshire··on Why electric cars will take over sooner than you think
Yes, this should mean much more efficient use of both the grid and nuclear power, both can provide continuous fixed supply for 24 hours but have had to be overbuilt to match up with the demand curve, which up to now has been extremely uneven.
Brakenshire··on Why electric cars will take over sooner than you think
The percentage of the global population that has ever driven 140km/h (87mph) as an average speed for five hours continuously is tiny. Fine if that’s your use-case but it is a vanishingly small niche.

It’s $17k cheaper than the Model Y you’re talking about (longer range, AWD) after the tax credit.

Brakenshire··on Lithium battery costs have fallen by 98% in three decades
BNEF do a price survey, prices have continued to decline at the same rate. The decline was exactly 13% again last year.

Lithium prices have gone down in the last few years, and Cobalt isn’t a necessary component.

Brakenshire··on Lithium battery costs have fallen by 98% in three decades
I wouldn’t anticipate suddenly hitting a price floor, but instead the rate of reduction tapering off, which we’re not seeing yet in a clear way. There’s still a long way to go before we hit the limits from resource costs. And the current rate doesn’t need to continue for long before we start hitting price parity. In some cases we’re already there.
Brakenshire··on Lithium battery costs have fallen by 98% in three decades
The rate of change has been stable over the last 15 years, do you bet it continues for a 16th year or that it stops this year?
Brakenshire··on Popular YouTubers who are building their own sites
Surely the issue is that Vimeo doesn't have Google's adtech behemoth behind it, so either the creator or the audience has to pay for hosting, rather than it being paid for by advertising.

Peertube seems perhaps a more credible competitor in that sense, by making hosting cheaper. As long as the creators can fund themselves with Patreon, merchandise or whatever else.
