Boxbot··on This Test Shows Why Tesla Autopilot Crashes Keep Happening
That's not how human attention and focus works. There are literally decades of study on this sort of thing. Almost every other major carmaker and autonomous vehicle development company (except Uber, and some poor woman was killed because of it) have publicly abandoned plans for SAE Level 3 autonomous vehicles because over years of testing they've found that their own engineers, test drivers, directors, etc, who are intimately familiar with the technology and the peculiarities of their own product, can't stay focused on the car and the driving environment under those conditions.
Boxbot··on This Test Shows Why Tesla Autopilot Crashes Keep Happening
Same reason the autopilot crashes happen: Driver isn't paying attention.

Problem is that the autopilot system makes it harder for the driver to pay attention.

Boxbot··on San Francisco is officially $10B in the hole
having seen what BART janitors have to deal with, I say give them a raise and double the headcount.
Boxbot··on Zuora S-1
Not gonna argue that integrating with their platform is a gigantic pain in the ass, but I feel that part of it is the flexibility (and complexity) of their subscription model. Would you say different? Not too familiar with the other players in the field so I don't know how they compare really.

Definitely some reliability and performance concerns, though. I feel like half the pain is just having to shove so much defensive programming in our integration.

Boxbot··on The Everything Bubble Is Ready to Pop
If housing prices were indeed inflated then there's little difference between a "recovery" and the bubble inflating again (assuming prices didn't crash to something well below reasonable value).
Boxbot··on The job no one wants: young people won't work in logging
> Now, fellers can earn as little as $18 an hour.

So they get paid a little more than someone serving burgers in California but have to deal with much more remote, skilled, difficult, dangerous work. I'm getting really tired of articles posing this sort of thing as a "labor shortage".

Boxbot··on Once-Flush Startups Struggle to Stay Alive as Investors Get Pickier
The admonishment is deserved; High capital requirements don't necessarily mean high burn rates, they mean that you'd better be damn sure that you have a viable business model to make returns on all that capital. The "unlimited exposure to high expenses" isn't some nit, it's a fatal flaw in their strategy.
Boxbot··on Ring-Road Bug
Probably something like 1 in 10 of the Gmail users examined have weak / short enough passwords that by knowing the length the dictionary used becomes small enough that a brute force attack becomes feasible.
Boxbot··on Uber denies Waymo theft claims on grounds it never used custom LiDAR
My (admittedly limited) understanding of the case so far is that neither Uber nor the former Google employee dispute that the theft did in fact take place.
Boxbot··on Robinhood stock trading app valued at $1.3B with big raise from DST
I have my doubts that playing with the stock market is in any way conducive to "financial health" for the average consumer.
Boxbot··on A textbook case in workplace discrimination
Interestingly, you decided to frame this as "treating [the women] differently on the basis of sex". Why not "treating [the men] differently on the basis of sex"?
Boxbot··on Americans are struggling to pay off their auto loans
I bought a Honda Fit last year; It's the smallest, cheapest car Honda sells in the US and I don't think anyone would classify it as a luxury vehicle. I'm paying ~$500 a month on a 36 month loan w/ 2% interest (a bit over the actual terms).

Depending on your down payment and loan length your monthly price may be higher or lower but it seems to me that if you are buying a new car in 2017 then $500 per month is going to be a pretty good baseline.

The reason why I took out a loan at 2% instead of paying cash is because I'm making greater returns than that investing it.

Boxbot··on Uber ordered to stop self-driving vehicle service in San Francisco
I find it telling that they do not actually say whether the car was in autonomous mode when it ran the red light, only that it was "due to human error". Was the human error that they didn't assume manual control and stop the car?
Boxbot··on Putting Sugary Soda Out of Reach
I remember checking out of bottle of "Naked" juice and being astounded by the amount of sugar in a serving; 30-50g depending on the product.

But don't worry, they've got "NO SUGAR ADDED" printed right there on the label.

Fruits tend to have a lot of sugar and when you juice / concentrate them it only makes things worse on that front.

Boxbot··on San Francisco tech worker: 'I don't want to see homeless riff-raff'
Are children of parents who are not able to provide as much as other parents, for whatever reason, not as deserving? Are children to be held accountable for the successes and failures of their parents?
Boxbot··on Gilt Groupe Is a Cautionary Tale for Startup Employees Banking on Stock Options
My tax accounting is rusty but my understanding is that unused AMT credits carry forward indefinitely and become refundable after three years. Regular long-term capital losses can also be carried forward indefinitely, offsetting capital gains and up to $3,000 of ordinary income per year.
Boxbot··on Only 20% of people who can use Apple Pay have done so
I agree that CurrentC will (hopefully) never take off but it has already had a chilling effect on Apple Pay adoption. There are many stores that used to allow NFC tap-to-pay but actually disabled that functionally entirely to prevent people from using Apple Pay specifically.

e.g. pre Apple Pay I used to be able to use tap-to-pay with an actual credit card at CVS but they've disabled that functionality on all their payment terminals to block Apple Pay. Now I can just go to Walgreens but that doesn't change the fact companies are actively taking steps to retard the growth of Apple Pay.

Boxbot··on Only 20% of people who can use Apple Pay have done so
Another issue is the lack of participating banks. All of my credit cards work with Apple Pay (and I use it multiple times a week) but all of my parents' cards and a bunch of my friends' cards are simply not supported.

I like Apple Pay, but with EMV rolling out in the US and the CurrentC consortium trying to kill credit card use in the retail space entirely I don't know whether it's ever going to be able to reach wide-spread adoption.

Boxbot··on Crystal, iOS ad blocker, to accept money to let ads through
Thanks for sharing! I was initially very happy with Crystal but an ad blocker that doesn't block ads doesn't sound very useful to me.

Boxbot··on Apple iOS 9 Ad-Blocking Explained (And Why It's a Bad Move)

Till then, thousands of ad-funded sites will likely go under.
Sounds more like getting better before it gets worse to me. I'm sure they'll eventually figure out some other way to shove advertising down our throats but that was going to happen anyway.
Boxbot··on What Happens to Home Prices When Technologists Come to Town
It has nothing to do with the technology sector directly; It's just about money and the pendulum swinging back towards urban living being considered desirable. A booming sector of the economy combined with a relatively affluent portion of the population wanting to move into geographically constrained areas that have been neglected in terms of development for the past few decades.
Boxbot··on No Code of Conduct

  1. We are all adults. Capable of having adult discussions.
When your first point is so blatantly, demonstrably wrong why on earth should anyone bother giving any further consideration to your argument?
Boxbot··on The creation of the modern laptop
It's not hyperbole but you could probably say the same about any modern computing device. Think about all the hours spent by the countless engineers designing all the individual components in a modern laptop. Now think about all the hours spent developing / iterating on previous versions of those components to get them to the point they are now.

It's very impressive.

Boxbot··on Google Unable to Stop Malicious Ads from Hijacking Websites
I've noticed this on several sites I frequently visit (and have whitelisted in adblock). Try to do the right thing and support my favorite sites but of course a handful of bad actors make things miserable for everyone.
