BostonEnginerd··on Z-library founders arrested in Argentina
One nit to pick. In my experience (NYC and Boston areas), libraries almost only buy their books new and specifically request for people to not donate their used books to them.

Other libraries I've been in have used book sales with donated books to raise funds for the library.

BostonEnginerd··on Monica: Open-source personal relationship manager
The Monica /Chandler thing is a reference to the 90s television show “Friends”.
BostonEnginerd··on The Velveteen Rabbit was always more than a children’s book
That chapter always gets me, whether I read it or listen to it in an audiobook.
BostonEnginerd··on A rash of nearly lethal mushroom poisonings in Ohio
The rash of poisonings makes it sound like avoiding toxic species isn’t that trivial.
BostonEnginerd··on Lufthansa bans AirTags in checked luggage
It’s not reasonable to implement something like that. Any gap would need to be <0.5cm in size in order for it to work on a 2.4GHz Bluetooth signal.

Considering that half of the passengers are likely forgetting to put their device in airplane mode - and they’re all using Bluetooth headphones, there is effectively zero risk to the airplane.

BostonEnginerd··on Did an NYU professor get fired because students hate organic chem?
If this is the case, then the course should be broken down into a bit that can be mastered in the timeframe allotted.
BostonEnginerd··on After self-hosting my email for twenty-three years I have thrown in the towel
I've found that Mailinabox provides a pretty much turn-key setup. (https://www.mailinabox.email)
BostonEnginerd··on Will young Americans want to work in semiconductor manufacturing? [video]
Many of the chemicals are made domestically as shipping large quantities of pyrophoric chemicals like silane over oceans is challenging.

Air Liquide, Air Products, Versum Materials, Brewer Science are all companies with significant US presence.

BostonEnginerd··on Intel enters a new era of chiplets
I'm sure part of that is just marketing segmentation, but significant binning does take place. If VT-x is disabled, that may indicate that there were some defects in the location that those circuits inhabit.
BostonEnginerd··on Home Heating Cost Comparison
New York / New England electricity costs are about $0.25 to $0.3/kWh these days unfortunately.
BostonEnginerd··on US Mortgage Lenders Are Starting to Go Broke
Why can't they?
BostonEnginerd··on More energy on less land: The drive to shrink solar’s footprint
I do think that space efficiency and good availability for nuclear are a reasonable argument for that technology. That doesn't mean we also shouldn't be putting solar onto every flat surface in the country, homes, businesses, parking lots, etc.
BostonEnginerd··on Intel Reports First Net Loss in over 30 Years
One of the announcements was a reduction in the amount they were spending on building fabs.

I’m not sure cutting capex to pay a dividend is a good move.

BostonEnginerd··on No Refrigerant Left Behind
I remember that company! I was wondering what had happened to them. There was a bunch of press, and then nothing.
BostonEnginerd··on Shaving is an example of how consumer products extract more money
The double edged safety razor is amazing for thicker facial hair. Even if I’m shaving every day, cartridge razors all get clogged on me. No amount of hot water gets it out, and the stuck hair roughs up my face like sandpaper.

The double edge safety razor is so much easier to clean out.

BostonEnginerd··on The joys and sorrows of maintaining a personal website
This is the reason that I maintain my website. About once per year, someone will contact me regarding something I posted. I don't get very many hits on it, but it's quite gratifying if it saves someone time.
BostonEnginerd··on Boeing looked for flaws in its Dreamliner and couldn’t stop finding them
My experience with regular windows on airplanes is that the shutters can get quite hot as well. The energy they absorb from the sun has to go somewhere — and it gets radiated away as heat.
BostonEnginerd··on The new golden age of wildlife in New England
I hope that the insect and bird populations also start to recover. We don’t see that many bugs in the Boston area, and the cities spray mosquito fog every summer because of EEE.

Our birds of prey in Eastern MA are being impacted by rat poison - they eat rats which have been poisoned.

Certainly there are improvements, and we should celebrate those. But we should also recognize that there’s a way to go.

BostonEnginerd··on Everyone gets numbers wrong, even the New York Times
It says limes are 0.29 cents each on the sign, not $0.29.
BostonEnginerd··on Welcome to 'Le Monde' in English
I'm completely with you here. I subscribed to the NYT for some time through Apple subscriptions. No funny business when I wanted to unsubscribe, just two clicks and my subscription stopped when the expiration date came.
BostonEnginerd··on 5G Skeptic
Ping times are higher for sure. I’ll try to check what they are when I get home.

Comcast worked quite well in my neighborhood. I always received the speed I was being charged for. The TMobile service isn’t quite as reliable, but it’s still quite good. I spend a lot of time on video calls and never have any issues even during high usage times.

BostonEnginerd··on 5G Skeptic
T-Mobile’s 5G network has been able to get me off of Comcast and onto their home internet service. Speeds in my neighborhood have been great, typically 300Mbps download / 70Mbps upload.

I’m thankful that this has created competition in the home internet market in my area.

BostonEnginerd··on Zotero 6
You can use the BetterBibtex plugin to export the references to a bib or json file which can be ingested by Pandoc. There's an option to have it re-export the file every time you make a change to the library.

Citations work pretty well. You can customize the output with different CSL files [1].

BostonEnginerd··on White Castle wants to install robot cooks in 100 new locations
They're delicious at 3AM when you may have had a few too many.
BostonEnginerd··on Elementary OS is imploding
Their solution is to act as a proxy between your HomeAssistant installation at home and the public internet. Supposedly the SSL certificate sits on your device and they have no access to your data. I think this is the right way to do it
BostonEnginerd··on Ask HN: How does TurboTax get away with dark patterns?
I’ve done my taxes with FreeTaxUSA for a few years as well. The webapp is simple, with no swooshing animations - but it gets the job done for 1/4 the price of TurboTax these days.

A few years ago I benchmarked the two together and they basically gave the same answers. They also don’t hold your past returns hostage.

I’ve been recommending them to everyone that I talk to about taxes.

BostonEnginerd··on Ronja: Reasonable Optical Near Joint Access
This project predates easy and cheap PCB creation.
BostonEnginerd··on Ask HN: Where do you hang out virtually online?
SSB is a really neat project. I saw today that the Patchwork client is no longer recommended, but there don't appear to be any other equivalent frontends. Do you have any recommendations?
BostonEnginerd··on Around one-in-three children globally suffer from lead poisoning
I believe that the major vector indoors is dust coming from the lead paint on windows and window sills. When the wear surfaces rub against each other, a small amount of lead paint dust is created and inhaled or ingested by children.

Outdoors, the problem is the lead dust in the soil. Chickens are getting lead poisoning in urban areas:

BostonEnginerd··on Intel's $20B Ohio factory could become world's largest chip plant
Largely gas and coal powered, which isn't ideal. It is cheap though.
