It's always interesting to see differences in people's 'base' stacks. Where feasible I like to have the environment on my dev machine reflect production as closely as possible so I would go with Passenger over Pow, but this is a great little guide.
I just bought the maxed out 13 inch air in October, and it's been a great dev machine (rails, ios) someone please talk me out getting the newest shiniest for no good reason
I'm not the biggest fan of the present vision for facebook, but these brilliant people are enabling others through their open source contributions http://developers.facebook.com/opensource/ to make things we find meaningful
I don't have enough saved up, but my income is high enough to outsource development on a pay-as-you-go basis. The idea is monetizable but not yet. I will share once I am a little farther along - want to have something to show
It's this kind of thinking that turned Facebook from a fun way to share with friends to a glorified contact book for me. What is there that I would want to share with my drinking buddies, mom, a person I met on a plane, coworkers and 16-year-old niece simultaneously?
I wish someone had a patent on the business process of buying patents just to sue companies that actually try to provide some value to the world and then went around suing these parasitic lowlives.
I'm stumbling around this very issue right now, but his recommendations would not work if you need to interface with native hardware functions such as the camera. It would be great if there were a web interface into native functionality, however. What are the obstacles to os developers providing it?
Yeah, it's pretty easy to mod but time-consuming. Great for prototyping, but I really like the themes and grid system for JQuery mobile. Speed over http may be a concern with both, but I'm judging from iphone 3g testing
It seems as though many people on here buy into the myth that entrepreneurship is something that has to be this life-draining all-consuming beast to wrestle. I agree with his list of qualities, but we need to question the assumption that it has to be that way and if it does, why are we not being lazier and more efficient? Maybe I'm being naive, but if we can pinpoint those actions that are driving us forward and have the wisdom to leave the rest alone or to someone better we can work happily and in good measure. Isn't the point of entrepreneurialism to create the kind of life, product and company where we can have the best of all worlds?
Congratulations on not only 'shipping' but documenting the process. I've been working on something technically similar, but with a very different application. Can't wait to share!
Right on, just because there is an app store doesn't stop any app makers or users from installing applications from other sources. However, finding and installing apps just became easier for users as well as providing a centralized distribution channel for the app makers.
Hmm, this spontaneity might just be channeled into a start up idea. Imagine a site predicated on a community of users pitching in a buck a month or more to fund some life-changing event for a random or deserving person.
Part of me thinks that if all the companies that exist and thrive thanks to open source did this, we would advance tech much quicker. On the other hand, maybe it is the constraints and passion alone that have kept the community at its present level of quality.
