BonoboIO··on We investigated Amsterdam's attempt to build a 'fair' fraud detection model
The article talks a lot about fairness metrics but never mentions whether the system actually catches fraud.

Without figures for true positives, recall, or financial recoveries, its effectiveness remains completely in the dark.

In short: great for moral grandstanding in the comments section, but zero evidence that taxpayer money or investigative time was ever saved.

BonoboIO··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
I'm honestly shocked at the new interface. It's like Windows Vista all over again - everything's broken. The whole thing looks like a broken HTML page with CSS slapped on top of macOS Finder. Text readability is terrible and I really hope you can disable most of the glass effects in accessibility settings.

This'll probably stick around for years until Apple decides to switch design languages again, and they'll never admit the old one was bad - classic Apple.

It's unbelievably broken... like an Android phone with 30 themes installed at once.

iOS 18 actually looks good and is readable, which makes this worse. That's the thing about peaking - it's a long way down. Feels like they had to ship something because their AI isn't just behind - it's absolutely broken like shit. Siri's been stale for 15 years, and they're not even polishing features that others have half-baked into their products. They've got... nothing.

Interesting, never thought of that that we even recreate family in our workplaces.

My therapist said one sentence to me that stuck „… you are marrying your parents“

Like you seek a partner that has similarities to your mother or father. I see that very often with friends.

BonoboIO··on Britain's police are restricting speech in worrying ways
Well … it’s even true in Germany, not libel but you can be convicted of „Volksverhetzung“ even if you state something that is true, like that a certain person of a religion would be today be called a pedophile. It’s literally stated in the religions holy book, but if the statement is ment to push racism it can be still a crime.
BonoboIO··on GitHub MCP exploited: Accessing private repositories via MCP
wild Wild West indeed. This is going to be so much fun watching the chaos unfold.

I'm already imagining all the stories about users and developers getting robbed of their bitcoins, trumpcoins, whatever. Browser MCPs going haywire and leaking everything because someone enabled "full access YOLO mode." And that's just what I thought of in 5 seconds.

You don't even need a sophisticated attacker anymore - they can just use an LLM and get help with their "security research." It's unbelievably easy to convince current top LLMs that whatever you're doing is for legitimate research purposes.

And no, Claude 4 with its "security filters" is no challenge at all.

BonoboIO··on Mozilla to shut down Pocket on July 8
I've got years of saved articles in there and the export situation is pretty bad. It only gives you the URLs, not the actual content. So if a site goes down (which happens all the time), you're basically screwed.

I'm thinking about throwing Claude Code at this problem and building a proper exporter that actually saves the content.

BonoboIO··on Mozilla to shut down Pocket and Fakespot
So Mozilla is shutting down Pocket completely by July, and this is under their new CEO Laura Chambers who took over in February 2024. Meanwhile Mitchell Baker - who was pulling in $6.9M by 2022 - just bailed out entirely this February after "focusing on AI and internet safety" for exactly one year.

Let me get this straight: Baker's salary went from $2.4M in 2018 to nearly $7M in 2022, while browser share collapsed to 3.45%. During that time she laid off 320 employees (70 in Jan 2020, 250 in Aug 2020), claiming COVID despite record revenues in 2019. Then she steps down as CEO to "focus on AI," only to quit Mozilla entirely a year later.

Now the new CEO's brilliant strategy is to kill off Pocket - one of the few products people actually used that they acquired in 2017. Eight years of "investment" down the drain.

This is exactly what I mean when I say Mozilla has no fucking clue what they're doing. They're completely dependent on Google's search money, executives are getting rich while laying off workers, and their response to irrelevance is to shut down working products. The whole organization feels like it exists just so Google can point to it and say "we're not a monopoly."

This has to be one of the dumbest ideas I've seen posted here.

Just think about the sheer effort required to dump 1 BILLION watts of waste heat into space - the engineering challenges alone make this completely impractical.

Compared to this, Theranos actually looks like a solid investment. At least Holmes had working demos and big-name backers before it all fell apart. This doesn't even pass the basic smell test.

I would never transfer my data to OVH without having ALL data backuped on some other service of another provider.

Look what happens to one of OVHs datacenters, with wood ceilings and floors … completely destroyed some companies because their backups were also there.

When you search for it, you will see how negligently they managed this datacenter.
