Willow McDonald is looking quite young for a 55 year old male born in 1965.
BobbyTables2··on OpenAI scraps release of new AI model over safety concerns
The Ford Pinto passed internal safety standards.

OpenAI isn’t exercising caution, they’re exercising MARKETING and GOVERNMENT INFLUENCE.

I’d suggest the moderators ban this crap.

BobbyTables2··on 1996 chat room simulator connected to Win95 and System 7 web desktops
The UI also reminds me how clean things used to be.

Simple straightforward buttons; the screen is not filled to the brim with advertising…

BobbyTables2··on Joseph Szabo’s pictures of American adolescents
One thing I noticed long ago about the boomer generation is they are likely to make small talk with random strangers in public (store clerk, waiter, etc) without much hesitation. They knew their neighbors.

People today are more closed, I think they’d be less likely to do that, even as they get into middle age and past the insecurities of youth.

Sex/drugs/rock-n-roll probably got a segment of the population out of its shell that otherwise wouldn’t.

BobbyTables2··on Improving site performance by shipping more CSS
I thought CSS was originally to simplify hand-written HTML so it could focus more on the content and formatting would be standardized by the CSS stylesheet.

2MB of CSS just sounds insane. What are we even doing here?

FFS, why not just go back to explicitly inlining all the formatting in the HTML itself? I have trouble believing all the CSS is actively used. It’s not like any of this is written by humans these days.

2MB of text - isn’t that roughly half the size of the Christian Bible?

BobbyTables2··on Finally, A True Blue Rose Exists
Now can they please start making roses actually smell good like they used to?
BobbyTables2··on There are no "rogue" AI agents
Jurassic Park foretold such:

"I'll tell you the problem with the scientific power that you're using here: it didn't require any discipline to attain it. You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn't earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don't take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you even knew what you had, you patented it, packaged it, and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now you're selling it!"

I wish the US built more stuff domestically. Too many regions seems to just be a circular service economy with little else going for them…
BobbyTables2··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
How does one even put a direct financial value on clean water, clean air, lack of noise pollution, etc.?

These things have different values to different people. While most everyone wants them in some form, there is a huge spectrum between “it won’t kill me this month” and “living in pristine Mt. Fuji”.

Should private companies be allowed to pollute sparse remote areas with no population?

Does it have a financial value if nobody goes there?

BobbyTables2··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
Gee, schools got rid of text books and ask only multiple choice questions on Math tests… They now also use AI to grade short essays.

I’d have been more surprised if there wasn’t any impact on learning.

BobbyTables2··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
Shit is about to hit the fan.
BobbyTables2··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
Normally one practical solution would be to cover the front-facing camera on a phone.

Of course with face identification for unlocking, there is now a power incentive to not do so…

BobbyTables2··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
I believe that’s why class action lawsuits can serve a purpose…
BobbyTables2··on The Appocalypse
Reminds me of organized region and a few other institutions too…

I’ve come to appreciate that delivering software is not just having a few “10x developers”. One needs QA, marketing, field engineers, and other roles. It really is a group effort.

If 90% of the software engineers and QA were replaced by someone dispensing their intent to an AI, what’s the rest supposed to do?

In society, we have an entire ecosystem of unrelated professions that depend on each other.

A truly dystopian future would be everyone lazing around at home, living on UBI, watching AI-generated television and movies.

BobbyTables2··on Owners mourn spoiled food after firmware update bricks Samsung smart fridges
I don’t understand modern shoes.

Seems like almost everything moderately priced has soles made of a extremely lightweight, squishy soft plastic that neither has much traction nor any toughness — worse than cheap flip-flop material.

Shoe companies should be embarrassed to put their name on such crap, yet they try to pass it off as premium.

BobbyTables2··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
Seems like it could get annoying if one wants a full charge but has to plan up to 4 days in advance, compared to a 10 minute gas station run.
BobbyTables2··on 28% of job postings on company career sites have been open over 90 days
What about companies in which managers hold on to requisitions to defer layoffs?

Or companies that are in a perpetual hiring freeze?

BobbyTables2··on Swap, ZRAM, Zswap and Hibernate on NixOS
I suspect the intent is to move stale things out of RAM so it can be immediately used for more productive purposes when needed.

Shuffling out 8GB with a spinning hard drive could take a full minute…

That said, I agree with you. I’d rather not use swap unless absolutely necessary and I don’t want the latter to happen either…

Plus, I don’t want my storage in the “critical path” of memory accesses, even if rare.

BobbyTables2··on Show HN: Training a model to identify AI web content from structure alone
It might have been that!

The cadence was extremely robotic and consistent. Only thing that makes me think it wasn’t AI was the very end when they repeated a confirmation code and didn’t use the NATO names for the letters the second time around.

BobbyTables2··on Show HN: Training a model to identify AI web content from structure alone
Some people are just very robotic.

Today I spent 20 minutes in a call to customer support. The representative spoke so robotic-ally (both cadence and word choice), I was extremely confident they were an AI for the first 15 minutes. Was quite certain the automated AI had transferred me to a more advanced one…

Turns out they were just likely in a low cost Latin American country and trying really hard. I felt bad one could be reduced to such…

BobbyTables2··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
It’s also sad as wasting $200B or even a few billion on a worthless acquisition is just an ordinary quarter for some large tech companies.

At least space exploration results in some valuable technology being developed, even if done in an extremely expensive manner.

BobbyTables2··on ChatGPT now knows what you do on other websites via ad collector
I’ve also been wondering how many common problems have been hardcoded in the latest AI models…
