BobbyTables2··on Ultrasound imaging of the brain
With insurance in the US they’re $750 each… As in elbow and wrist on the same arm count separately…
BobbyTables2··on Chinese Supercomputer Overtakes U.S. as World's Fastest
I wonder about this too.

Seemed like “SETI At Home” and protein folding were the big thing back in the day.

With GPUs, I wonder what is done on supercomputers today, especially GPUs now having ludicrous amounts of RAM.

BobbyTables2··on Coal Butter - Butter Made from Coal
You mean organic, free range, non-GMO, gluten-free whale butter?
BobbyTables2··on MSc Thesis – The Limits of Generalized Sync
Given that the URL returns a “Forbidden” response, I’d say there are some other limits he didn’t consider…

Tabula + Excel could probably do it quicker.
BobbyTables2··on Elastic lays off 7% of employees
An AI can also regurgitate others decisions, based on a much wider knowledge base than these executives.

AI hardware costs are nothing compared to executives’ stock options too…

BobbyTables2··on OpenAI unveils its first custom chip, built by Broadcom
Why the hell Broadcom of all companies?
BobbyTables2··on I can haz smoller NixOS ISOs?
I assume you like it more than Gentoo?

Building from stage1 with customized CFLAGS was all the rage then…

BobbyTables2··on SpaceX sheds $400B in market value as debut rally hits reverse

BobbyTables2··on Runing GLM-5.2 on local hardware
Yeah, even Windows managed to not drive terribly dramatic upgrades in general computing (besides Windows’ absurd RAM usage and now requiring a TPM).

In the old days, Microsoft Entertainment Pack games were somewhat visibly taxing on some lower end systems.

BobbyTables2··on NSA director: 'Mythos "broke into almost all of our classified systems in hours"
And to think we’d used to mock the National Enquirer and other tabloids for ridiculous headlines.

I think we owe tabloids a small apology…

BobbyTables2··on My Mathematical Regression
Same with executives and upper management.

One cannot be a director/VP of 3 people. They need an empire…

BobbyTables2··on I was wrong about the Midjourney ultra-sound scanner
Even damn X-Rays cost more than $100.

Something like this will never cost patients $100. Even if the actual cost to a provider was $5, patients would be billed $500 after insurance…

BobbyTables2··on Linux eliminates the strncpy API after six years of work, 360 patches
Partly agree but there would have been squabbling on the data type of the size, unless it was variable length. The latter would have had other issues too.

For a while, 16bit would probably have seemed too extravagant. Now 32bit would probably seem too small.

For a “strongly typed” language, C is pretty damn loose where would have mattered.

BobbyTables2··on When I reject AI code even if it works
You’ve transitioned from “individual contributor” to “manager”! (;->
BobbyTables2··on The discovery that changed how scientists think about memory
Having a suddenly functioning heart probably does wonders for hormone levels and consequently personality.

I once realized that the “snowball” of dread/fear in my chest was likely a minor irregular heartbeat (that I’ve always had) exacerbated in stressful situations.

BobbyTables2··on Court Records Should Be Free
The two aren’t quite identical.

The municipality could service all the homes and pay for it with taxes, probably using their own people or a negotiated contract.

The private (and usually no -savvy) individual has much less negotiating power and is going to get taken to the cleaners by a plumber. Three houses in a street are likely to have 3 different plumbers on 3 different dates.

It’s just like that the cost per square foot to pave a single driveway vs the entire sidewalk or foundations for a whole neighborhood.

BobbyTables2··on Think of the children: How to force real ID for all internet traffic (2023)
Travel not even needed.

Lovebugs are visible and land on their arm.

Try explaining WHY the bugs are connected…

BobbyTables2··on Hey, n00b, we didn't hire you to complete tasks
Some new hires end up cleaning the mess that their manager left behind from back when they were the noob…
BobbyTables2··on Norway imposes near ban on AI in elementary school
Learning is also impacted when homework/test questions are created and graded by AI.

The line of 90 degrees north latitude shouldn’t be visible on a map…

Why have teachers?

The AI might as well grade itself.

BobbyTables2··on AI Compute Extensions (ACE) Specification
The Trusted Computing Group.

They make Simple things Complicated.

BobbyTables2··on Show HN: Talos – Open-source WASM interpreter for Lean

BobbyTables2··on .gitignore Isn't the only way to ignore files in Git
Sounds like a powerful feature for subverting code review…
BobbyTables2··on Lore – Open source version control system designed for scalability
I assume compiling the payment code as a library (w/o debug symbols) and making that available to the wider group wast allowed? Header files a problem?
BobbyTables2··on U.S. science is in chaos
That is certainly a massive increase in spending... Seems a bit hard to believe.

Is it actually separate from the AI related mania?

I feel like even the COVID related R&D surge couldn’t have been anywhere close.

(Perhaps technically unfair, but I don’t view AI related stuff as traditional R&D given the irrational forces driving it. Seems closer to the Dutch Tulip Mania episode).

BobbyTables2··on AI Compute Extensions (ACE) Specification
Thank $ALL_DIETIES that the TCG wasn’t involved!
BobbyTables2··on Taxonomy of the Occlupanida (parasitoids on bread bag tags)
Pretty sure “fusoridae” had a prominent role in the original Tron movie.
BobbyTables2··on Microsoft turns to AWS as GitHub faces AI capacity crunch
Scalable algorithms and data structures have existed for decades.

Even if they had 10 billion users with 10 billion repositories it shouldn’t be a big deal on a home PC.

BobbyTables2··on Not everything needs to be groundbreaking
The author might as well write about the banality of water while boating in a tropical paradise.
