BobbyTables2··on Starlink from 1984
Nowadays it’s even easier.

Add a pair of video cards and USB cards, pass one of each to a VM.

Will feel like having 2-3 native PCs!

BobbyTables2··on Starlink from 1984
Forget the terminal - do it with an FPGA!
BobbyTables2··on TP-Link Kasa cameras leaked home GPS via unauthenticated UDP for 6 years
That disclosure timeline is brutal…
BobbyTables2··on Texas wins court order to suspend domain name for violating age-verification law
Perhaps for violations of _federal_ law…

However, applying this for violations of _state_ law seems odd.

Where does it end?

What if a law enacted by a single US city’s city council is violated? Would US as a country seize the domain?

BobbyTables2··on Topcoat: The full full-stack framework for Rust
Does “full-stack” really mean “webserver + webpage” nowadays?
BobbyTables2··on Texas wins court order to suspend domain name for violating age-verification law
Indeed.

Does this mean Texas can shutdown other websites in other states that provide abortion support? I’m sure there are those who would argue such to be harmful to children…(not to mention the fetus)

BobbyTables2··on Texas wins court order to suspend domain name for violating age-verification law
I don’t understand - was this site or company based in Texas?

Otherwise the general idea seems absurd that an individual state could freeze a domain impacting for the whole Internet…

(EDIT: I won’t lose any sleep at the loss of such scum but the general principle seems a bit strange.)

BobbyTables2··on Show HN: Firefox in WebAssembly
Imagine the loss to Google if every Firefox user’s default search engine wasn’t Google…
BobbyTables2··on 800 Canadian wildfires burning as air quality alerts extend to US
Also competition at the same time.

Canada normally surpasses the per-capita carbon emissions of the US. Now, they’re setting records ablaze and further cementing their lead.

BobbyTables2··on If you want to create a button from scratch, you must first create the universe
Also seems crazy to bundle a whole browser for a single app when every computing device has at least 1 of only 3 browsers (WebKit, Mozilla, Chromium).

There are fewer browsers than native GUI environments but we still couldn’t make that work…

BobbyTables2··on If you want to create a button from scratch, you must first create the universe
Indeed. Windows 95 was Peak UI.

Even Hollywood movies show better UIs than modern crap.

BobbyTables2··on Teardown: A Generic 7-Port USB 3.0 Hub That Wasn't
Passing the USB3 wires to a single port is quite sneaky!
BobbyTables2··on The git history command
Wonder if the history command is all that useful.

I prefer the interactive rebase and use it frequently.

Would much rather “visually” move commits around than accidentally aim “git history” at an orphaned commit hash no longer in my local branch.

BobbyTables2··on Ask HN: How do you troubleshoot desktop Linux crashes/freezes?
30 years ago, suspend was dicey in Windows.

Things have improved but you’re still pressing your luck…

What about SSH in to debug before rebooting? Or maybe log with the kernels’ net console feature (mainly wired Ethernet), assuming a physical serial port isn’t available

BobbyTables2··on America's Latest Weapon Against Iran: Sea Drones
Surely MacGuyver did this with a speedboat, shoelace, and some dynamite 40 years ago!
BobbyTables2··on Linux 0.11 rewritten in idiomatic Rust, boots in QEMU
Longer isn’t always worse.

C code probably has no problem mixing and perverting int vs enum. Bitfields, structs, etc…

A rust program would define an enum and also implement handling of unexpected values (or consider them errors). Structs and bitfields would be more intentionally used.

Sure, Rust macros can avoid the boilerplate code, but overall line count may still increase a bit.

That said, I’d blame auto-generated code here as other commenters do.

BobbyTables2··on LinkedIn, a mass grave of ghost jobs, is now becoming a dating app
It’s going to get really bad when recruiters start asking people on a date just to see their LinkedIn connections…

“Sorry, I don’t connect on the 3rd date”

BobbyTables2··on LinkedIn, a mass grave of ghost jobs, is now becoming a dating app
What are the summaries going to say? “I’ve dated 10k women, follow me…”
BobbyTables2··on Protobuf-py: Protobuf for Python, without compromises
Cargo-cult mentality.

If protobuf hasn’t been created by Google, nobody would use it.

It’s actually not well designed for small requests, and doesn’t even deal with versioning all that well. It’s more verbose than a C struct yet not self-describing either.

To me, it fails to excel at any one thing yet people blindly use it anyway.

If one really considers the details, Protobuf makes ASN.1 actually start to look good!

BobbyTables2··on Mechanistic interpretability researchers applying causality theory to LLMs
I also suspect the learned patterns are not necessarily efficient, though might be by accident.

One could “learn” addition by memorizing a truth table instead of understanding the concept… The truth table itself wouldn’t have much meaning.

BobbyTables2··on Google deleting all recently inactive accounts without phone number
Google is also extremely interested in my home address…
BobbyTables2··on AI 2040 and the cult of intelligence
Also equally effective at suppressing political oppression…

Imagine if having opposing views tarnished social credit, making one unemployable…

BobbyTables2··on Stop Telling Me to Ask an LLM
I actually hate reading posts that go “I can’t understand/fix this problem. Tried LLM…”

To me, such screams “I’m too lazy to do anything more than ask a LLM. I’ve tried nothing and I’m all out of ideas”

Show me you put a modicum effort and aren’t just looking to be spoon-fed the content from the first Google result that would have been found.

BobbyTables2··on Distributed system is slower than a laptop
I lack the mental capacity to comprehend the activity and 100 daemons and containers going on in an idle Kubernetes system.

It’s easier to make sense of the Linux kernel source despite being something like 30M lines of code.

BobbyTables2··on Modern decor may be straining people's brains
Seems like the first half of that could be flipped as a disadvantage.

Imagine someone claiming the opposite causes dementia, evidenced by reduced oxygen usage and lowered brain activity…

BobbyTables2··on Distributed system is slower than a laptop
Even for reliability, distributed gets hairy.

I run a few VMs in a “homelab”. Was interested in redundancy so could work on system without taking down home networking… Familiar with GlusterFS, corosync/pacemaker, etc…

So to go from one system to 2, need a third system to at least ensure quorum.

Of course, storage has the same problem.

Active-active has its complexities. Maybe active-standby good enough with DRND. Still a lot to configure…

Filesystem replication now means my NVMe drives will be limited to 1Gbit/s networking link. 10GB somewhat difficult on SFF PC and expensive.

Physical location also matters. Standby probably should be somewhere else… But what about 3rd node? Wired networking not everywhere…

This ends up being a lot of moving parts, expense, and headache…

Guess what is fast? Single node. Move the storage drive to similar spare SFF PC. Two screws, takes about 3 minutes max. Local RAID-1 to guard against sudden failure… Backup a couple times a year for peace of mind.

It’s way too easy to overthink stuff…

BobbyTables2··on No leap second will be introduced at the end of December 2026
Too expensive in this economy ?
BobbyTables2··on AI content is everywhere on social media, especially LinkedIn
Even before AI, LinkedIn was already a cesspool of people posting trite crap frequently just to advertise that they have “followers” and collect new ones. Worse than the recruiters.

In what bizarro world would I want to follow a rando, who has absolutely nothing to do with my career, on a platform purportedly designed for like minded people to advance their career/business?

Might as well consider the dog with the most fleas as the “Alpha”!

BobbyTables2··on AI content is everywhere on social media, especially LinkedIn
You hit the nail on the head! Today’s fast paced world demands clear, concise communication. Fear not! Artificial Intelligence (AI) can allow people to communicate more effectively, allowing them to get a few extra minutes at the gym without guilt. Would you like some tips for improving work-life balance?

(Not AI, I couldn’t resist!)

BobbyTables2··on What Do We Know About the Microplastics Inside Us?
So microplastics are indeed harmless!

(/s)

Too bad common discourse is too distracted to consider nanoplastics…

By the time the public tires of microplastics debates, they’ll be in no mood to relitigate nanoplastics
