“We’ll design it, test it, release it, and never touch it again !”
It seems silly to expose a tiny helper to the entire compilation unit when it is only meant to be used inside one function…
Think of the total cost of human development, education, etc. to make them “ready to be hired”.
These efforts drive a host of side industries (teachers, daycare, medical services, etc.)
AI can handle a lot tasks for a tiny fraction of that cost, time, and risk. Now add in the cost of yearly medical insurance, payroll tax, etc.
If AI makes people more efficient, then we don’t need to hire as many people…
Kinda feels like the labor equivalent of “deflation”, perhaps with similar problems…
I certainly never could…
I can somewhat imagine a simple square or triangle but only more like feeling it in the dark without fully “seeing” it. Anything more complex, like a pretzel is out of the question, just disappears/instantly-forgotten.
My dreams can be very vivid, except for some where an object disappears if I focus directly on it.
Always wondered whether this is normal, aphantasia, or something else…
It really is absurd to ask programming questions to a model also trained about the lifecycle of a fruit fly.
Instead of building small models from scratch, we train an enormous model and use ridiculous amounts of GPU memory. In the end, the whole thing is shoved into RAM because we don’t know where the useful parts are…
We certainly would know where they were if they were just in smaller models in the first place!
It grossly blurs the distinction between those who put in personal blood, sweat, tears, and money into starting a business versus those who make a few slides so they can use other people’s money to hire others to do all the work and come up with all the ideas.
Imagine traffic not getting any better after adding 1000 lanes in a medium sized town… not just to one area but to every single damn road.
Yet we’ve done this with RAM, CPU, and storage…
Apple also seems hellbent on fully utilizing all available space on the low end model. IOS+ System Data is about 30GB.
The original iPhone had a 4GB model and had space left over for the user to use!
If the employees were advantageous, I agree laying them off should be a long term negative as you seem to suggest.
Kinda like cheering the warmth of a burning bed on a cold night.
If they were inefficient/ineffective then management is crappy for not dealing with the problem sooner.
Sure, companies are resilient. But the first year or two of lost competence from layoffs can be quite rough…
How many updates did one apply to Windows 3.0 and Word in those days??
Sure, there might have been a “hotfix” available for download over a long distance BBS, but virtually nobody would have ever done so (even if they were lucky enough to have a modem). Maybe large companies applied such when impacted.
Even in the Windows XP days, I think windowsupdate.com was still a manually triggered process…
For a while, bundled drivers were a steaming pile of crap in quality and several generations of Windows suffered greatly until Microsoft got vendors in line and updates became common.
A normal C compiler actually has to worry about a lot of extreme cases.
Imagine a function takes two pointer arguments. What if they point to the same thing? What if one points to the other and is used for a write?
The nature of the code generated varies greatly if these are possibilities…
I mean, who reverse engineers the “About” dialog on an application!?!? That’s the last place I would have ever looked!
Maybe English is just broken. Words starting with a long “u” sound make me question the rule - different than other long vowels…
Does one play “a ukulele” or “an ukulele”?
We need an umpire to make the call (;->
I’ve seen too many solar panels installed on the north side of a house, under a tree.
A lot of human written literature is fairly concise. Yet LLM responses seem overly verbose and also too chipper. I don’t understand the origin of the “personality” that seems to be prevalent.
Did they aim for a weird hybrid of a typical realtor combined with Charles Dickens as the role model?
People will be shocked when they realize word didn’t require gigabytes…
I would have figured there would have been a massive financial interest in providers not having to waste time dealing with tedious Q&A and data entry with new patients…
I suppose altering instruction count or size still dooms the executable to become non-functional?
Or do all absolute & relative code & data references all get magically updated?
Only needs a Rick Astley QR code (;->
