BobbyTables2··on AWS says it can't restore some data from mideast facilities struck by Iran
And for a time, it even seems true as long as the natural disasters that impact various customer offices happen to not impact that one particular data center…
BobbyTables2··on OpenAI Discloses Six New Incidents of ‘Concerning’ A.I. Behavior
I even wonder if the frontier AI models are really as capable as they claim or if the companies behind them have just special cases all the “hard” questions.

For example, the earlier generative LLMs couldn’t correctly answer ‘how many r’s in “strawberry”?’ due to the underlying nature of the tokens.

If they get it correct today, how do they do it? It feels like we’re being deceived by the Wizard of Oz…

BobbyTables2··on Australia 'on the same page' as Canada as it seeks deeper EU alliance
As a non-Australian, I’d say your country’s own immigration policy is fairly unwelcoming.

I get no country wants to accept a wave of 80 year olds that will be a burden to its social welfare systems.

But I find it strange one would automatically deny seasoned working professionals in excellent health with knowledge, experience, and finances to offer — just because they were born before the premier of Good Morning Australia in 1981.

BobbyTables2··on Why don't machine learning research agents overfit?
If you saw what goes on in middle school classrooms of native English speakers, I’d think you’d be in for a surprise…
BobbyTables2··on Optimizing a Spin-Lock
Tell a kernel developer that spin locks aren’t for production code.

Bring a wind turbine with you because the laughing will be quite intense…

BobbyTables2··on Dario, Please
I don’t think lack of regulation is necessarily it.

If I build a robot that murders my neighbor, I’m still at fault.

We don’t absolve drivers of responsibility because of cruise control.

In that sense, AI is nothing new. If it is abused to cause harm, the person behind it should be liable.

BobbyTables2··on Spaceships (Reverse Asteroid)
That’s really cool! Neat cross of the old tank game with the wireframe graphics and asteroids!
BobbyTables2··on Former CIA official found with $40M in gold bars reaches tentative plea deal
That’s just under 300kg of gold…
BobbyTables2··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
Would be darkly hilarious if they were using the speaker or rear defroster as a cellular antenna.

(Yeah, technically horrible but I’m sure someone will find a way)

BobbyTables2··on Europe's "Less" Is Doing More Than Anyone Gives It Credit For
How is Europe similar then?

I’d expect the US spends vastly more energy on transportation (individual vehicles) and housing (larger, more AC, etc)

BobbyTables2··on Everyone should slow down AI development except for me
I suspect they know exactly what they are doing.

And the non-techies who have seen Terminator and other movies blindly line up behind them…

BobbyTables2··on Nvidia is the central bank of AI
If AI wasn’t a thing would Nvidia be worth 1/10th is current value?

Gaming is lucrative but not THAT lucrative…

BobbyTables2··on AI researchers debate how close we are to recursive self-improvement
The first “computers” were humans…
BobbyTables2··on Cherenkov Radiation
How is it possible for particles (with mass) to exceed the speed of (massless) photons in a medium?

I don’t mean in terms of the speed of light in a vacuum. Just seems weird that something with mass could outpace something without… Why are the photons so slow?

BobbyTables2··on Room 641A
We’re certainly not trying 15x harder to prevent car accidents as done to prevent another 9/11.

Prior we had metal detectors for people and hand luggage x-ray. Now we have x-ray backscatter for people, ID and facial photography, and a whole lot of other nonsense. Liquids banned, visitors at the gate not permitted, and the list goes on…

I don’t entirely agree with the actual measures taken purportedly to prevent a recurrence, but it’s hard to argue anything other than significant steps were taken.

Roughly a million people have died in car accidents since. Was there really nothing possible to prevent a fraction of them?

Where’s the new government organization? What new laws have been passed to prevent? What safety features are now required to mitigate such?

Ok, we have backup cameras and the funny headlights that turn off when the turn signal is on. Mission Accomplished?

BobbyTables2··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
Agreed. It would actually be a fairly perverse argument to claim that most AI output is somehow NOT owned by the AI provider…

Why wouldn’t they claim ownership of the AI output? They likely already claim ownership of the “transformation” (AI training) of the (pirated) input data.

BobbyTables2··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
Agreed. Companies don’t like trade secrets and proprietary information potentially being laundered to their competitors…
BobbyTables2··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
The AI not being human doesn’t escape ethical consideration - OpenAI employees are culpable for what they build.

This was academic research. Could just have easily been trade secrets and proprietary data.

BobbyTables2··on Claude, change the “Add to Cart” button to blue
This is worse than asking an intern to fix a shipping product…
BobbyTables2··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
Yes, I’d prefer that investors know that the new executive is not going to continue the same crap and same level of poor judgement. Want them to know the replacement is looking to do more than wear a golden parachute.

Imagine if investors actually thought the personnel change was a positive one…

BobbyTables2··on I'm sorry, you're not going to die from an AI-engineered supervirus
We might even get to relive history the way things are going…
BobbyTables2··on iPhone Duo
$2000 for a phone?

In this economy?

Feel like a $2000 computer in the 1980s made a lot more sense, even if damn expensive back then. Certainly would have lasted longer!

BobbyTables2··on Hackers had a live feed of every ID verification company scanned for over a year
In my experience, hotels in other countries also take a copy of the passports of all guests.

Also learned “know your customer” laws require US people to give passport + SSN to a foreign bank who then reports it back to the US. Given that such bank’s website involves disabling right-click for “security”, the only glimmer of hope is that the data is catastrophically lost due to stupidity before it can be compromised.

BobbyTables2··on Xanadu was waiting for agents
Don’t Lamport timestamps require all nodes to be known in advance?

Powerful concept but impractical and far too unscalable to be used globally.

BobbyTables2··on The browser's main thread is expensive
I expect soon each website will have its own browser, compiled as WASM which will be launched in order to render the JavaScript and HTML on the website.
BobbyTables2··on Any Human Ever – One life, drawn at random from all who have ever lived
I died of dysentery shortly after being born.

Makes Oregon Trail seem easy…

BobbyTables2··on Fluorescent lamps (don't) have ears
Would be interesting to do a FFT of pixels in the sequence of images and see if anything is in there.

Just because the brightness fluctuations aren’t noticeable doesn’t mean they aren’t there.

BobbyTables2··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
More like a company that had hundreds of millions of dollars and a couple decades should have fixed it by now.

If only Podman could beat Docker in advertising…

BobbyTables2··on Why do I lose my passion and want to do nothing?
I didn’t know that theory but makes sense.

When I was little, I was surprised to find that using a Game Genie made a lot of Nintendo games instantly become boring.

BobbyTables2··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX
I suspect first-sale doctrine doesn’t allow such.

However, if content is “licensed” instead of “sold” …
